Series 7: Teddys sweep Homestead

Homestead 10-7, Teddys 8-8

Pitcher use: Paige, TF Brown need three games; Waddell, Manning need two games; McGinnity needs one. Matlock pitched less than an inning in both games. Joss pitched two innings in finale.

Game One: Teddys 5, Homestead 4
WP: Rixey (1-0)
LP: Matlock (1-1)

Game Two: Teddys 3, Homestead 2,10 innings
WP: Joss (2-0)
LP: Matlock (1-2)
HR: J Gibson (8)

---

Lefty specialist Leroy Matlock wasn't the only bullpenner to have a rough series, but it was his name that has the "L" attached.

The Homestead southpaw hadn't been charged with a run all season, but the lefty-dominated Teddys did a number on him in the ninth innings of both games.

Game One opened as a pitchers duel between Rube Waddell and Max Manning. Homestead got two in the first, but the Teddys got one back in the bottom of the inning and took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Homestead tied it in the top of the eight, building a two-run rally on a single by Josh Gibson and a double by Jud Wilson. Chief Bender relieved Waddell, but Mule Suttles greeted him with an RBI single -- and further damage was negated when Tris Speaker threw out Wilson at home.

The Teddys promptly reclaimed the lead off Manning with a two-out rally of their own -- double, walk, single, walk. The inning ended with Bender allowed to hit for himself.

But Bender broke. A leadoff homer by Willard Brown knotted the score again. When Heavy Johnson and Dobie Moore singled, Bender was pulled for Eppa Rixey. Rixey got pinch-hitter Jimmy Lyons on a sac bunt, then fanned Tubby Scales and Chino Smith to strand runners on third and second.

In came Matlock. Consecutive singles by Ty Cobb, Eddie Collins and Honus Wagner came immediately, and the Teddys had the win.

Game Two pitted Three Finger Brown and Satchel Paige. Gibson homered in the fourth; the Teddys tied it in the eighth on singles by Brown, Cobb and Collins. A weary Paige worked out of that jam and worked the ninth as well before giving way to a pinch-hitter in the 10th.

While pinch-hitter Hurley McNair didn't play a role in the run, Homestead took the lead on a Smith double. In again came Matlock.

This time he retired Cobb and Collins. But Wagner doubled, moved to third when Tubby Scales erred on Tris Speaker's grounder, and scored on Shoeless Joe Jackson's pinch-hit single. Sam Crawford then plated Speaker with another single, and the unearned runs again made a loser of Matlock and Homestead.

Series 7: Obamas, Hilldale split

Obamas 10-6, Hilldale 5-11

Pitcher use: Plank, Byrd need three games; Nichols, Winters need two; Chesbro needs one. Willis pitched one inning in finale, A. Cooper less than an inning.

Game One: Obamas 4, Hilldale 1
WP: Nichols (3-1)
LP: Winters (0-3)
HR: Trouppe (1), Lombardi (4)

Game Two: Hilldale 6, Obamas 5
WP: Byrd (1-3)
LP: Plank (3-1)
Save: A Cooper (3)
HR: Schmidt (3)

---

Lowly Hilldale snapped a five-game losing streak in the finale, but even what had been a cozy 6-0 lead turned into a nail-biter.

Hilldale had Eddie Plank on the ropes all game, scoring a run in the third, three in the fifth and another in the sixth. Plank left with the bases loaded, a run in and nobody out, but Jack Chesbro induced a 5-2-3 double play from Willie Wells before popping up Judy Johnson.

But Bill Byrd had the Obamas flat-footed at the plate — at one point the righty, who entered the game 0-3 with an ERA of 8.46, retired 14 in a row — and Chesbro wild-pitched a run home in the eighth inning, making the score 6-0.

But the Obamas struck for three runs in the eighth, all coming with two out. Mike Schmidt led off the ninth with a homer off Byrd, who got the next two outs before hitting Tony Lazzeri with a pitch. That brought in closer Andy Cooper, who allowed a walk and a run-scoring single to pinch-hitter Ernie Lombardi before popping up Jimmy Foxx to end it.

There was nowhere near as much drama in the first game. The Obamas scored three runs in the first two innings — a two-single from Frank Robinson and a solo homer from Lombardi — and Kid Nichols did the rest.

Nichols allowed just five hits (one a homer by Quincy Trouppe) and four walks while striking out three in the complete-game win.

Series 7: Kennedys sweep X-Giants

Kennedys 10-7, X-Giants 8-9
Pitcher use: Radcliffe and Seaver need three games, Donaldson needs four games. R. Foster can pitch short relief in one of next two games.
Game One: Kennedys 9, X-Giants 8
WP: Koufax (1-1)
LP: Dihigo (1-3)
HR: Morgan (2), CP Bell (1)
Game Two: Kennedys 3, X-Giants 2
WP: Seaver (2-1)
LP: Donaldson (1-2)
HR: Bench (2), Hill (1)

---

Two very different games with very similar endings — walk-off homers from the Big Red Machine.
The Kennedys jumped out in front in the opener with a seven-run first inning. Rube Foster faced nine men and got none of them out.
Double Duty Radcliffe, who had started behind the plate, relieved Foster with six innings of one-run ball, during which time the X-Giants had a six-running inning of their own off Juan Marichal. Three of those runs were unearned, as George Brett and Robin Yount committed consecutive errors. (Each would have another boot later in the game, but neither resulted in any damage).
The X-Giants tied the game with two runs in the top of the eighth. Martin Dihigo and Sandy Koufax match each other with a shutout inning of relief, but in the bottom of the ninth Joe Morgan took Dihigo deep to end it.
The X-Giants opened the second game with a single by Cool Papa Bell and a homer by Pete Hill. But Tom Seaver shut them down the rest of the way, allowing just six hits for the game. Seaver walked none, struck out four and retired the final 10 men he faced.
John Donaldson looked like he could make those two early runs stand up. Luis Aparicio singled home Robin Yount for a run in the fifth, and Donaldson worked around a Henry Aaron triple in the sixth. But Harmon Killebrew led off the ninth with a double, Brett moved pinch-runner Reggie Jackson to third, and Johnny Bench followed with a home run.
Donaldson allowed six hits, walked four (three of them Killebrew) and fanned five.

Series 7: Ikes sweep Garfields

Ikes 8-8, Garfields 4-12

Pitcher use: Ford, Keefe need three games; Roberts, Galvin need two games. Bunning pitched an inning or less in each game. Wilhelm pitched an inning in finale.

Game One: Ikes 4, Garfield 2, 11 innings
WP: Bunning (3-0)
LP: Clarkson (0-2)
HR: Berra (2), Mathews 2 (3)

Game Two: Ikes 4, Garfields 3
WP: Ford (3-1)
LP: Keefe (1-3)
Save: Wilhelm (4)
HR: Snider (4), Banks (5)

---

The Garfields continue to struggle to score runs. Willie Mays appears to be past his struggles.

Pud Galvin and Robin Roberts matched each other for regulation distance — and beyond, in Roberts' case — before Eddie Mathews hit a two-run homer off John Clarkson in the bottom of the 11th.

It was Mathews's second home run of the game. He and Yogi Berra went back-to-back off Galvin in the second inning. Galvin allowed just three other hits and three walks.

For his part, Roberts allowed five hits in 10 innings before giving way to Bunning.

Bunning came through in relief in the second game as well, fanning Cap Anson with two on and two out in the eighth to preserve a 4-3 lead for Whitey Ford. Ford had allowed five hits and four walks, but five of those baserunners were bunched together in the Garfields' three-run fourth inning.

Tim Keefe held a 3-1 lead into the fifth, but Ernie Banks hit a solo homer to lead off the frame and Duke Snider hit a two-run dinger with two outs to provide the final margin. Keefe stranded runners in scoring position in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but Bunning negated the only threat the Garfields count mount.

Mays entered the series hitting .133 (8 for 60) but went five for eight in the series.

X-Giants at Kennedys (2)
Hilldale at Obamas (2)
Homestead at Teddys (2)
Crawfords at Franklins (2)

Player of the series: Babe Ruth, Franklins
Pitcher of the series: Slim Jones, X-Giants

Series 6: Crawfords sweep Teddys

Crawfords 9-5, Teddys 6-8

Pitcher use: Mathewson, Trent, McGinnity need three games; Alexander, B. Foster need two. Streeter pitched less than an inning in finale.

Game One: Crawfords 6, Teddys 4
WP: B. Foster (2-2)
LP: Alexander (1-3)
HR: Charleston (3)

Game Two: Crawfords 13, Teddys 9
WP: Trent (1-0)
LP: Mathewson (0-3)
Save: Streeter (2)

---

The Teddys' vaunted 1-2 pitching punch of Pete Alexander and Christy Mathewson continue to struggle. Alexander gave up six runs, all earned, in six innings in the opener — and that was stellar compared to Mathewson, who yielded nine runs without getting an out in the fourth.

For the season, Alex has a 6.10 ERA, and Matty a 9.86. They are a combined 1-6.

The big blows in the first game for the Crawfords came early, with Dick Lundy lashing a bases-loaded, two-out single in the second, which was immediately followed by an Oscar Charleston triple. Charleston added a solo homer in the fourth.

Bill Foster scattered 11 hits in going the distance. One run against him was unearned.

Honus Wagner was 2-for-5 with two runs, two steals and a double. Bobby Wallace caught the ninth inning; Roger Bresnahan had been used early to pinch-hit, and Ray Schalk had to leave after being hit by a pitch. Wallace was not tested.

The second game was marked by three bat-arounds — two by the Crawfords, one by the Teddys.

Ted Trent pitched better than the nine runs allowed indicate. He yielded six runs in the ninth, when the game had been essentially decided, and five of them were unearned. Sam Streeter ultimately got the last out for him.

Catcher Frank Duncan had five RBIs for the Crawfords, while John Beckwith and Bill Wright scored three runs apiece.

Joe McGinnity worked six innings of relief for the Teddys, sparing the rest of the bullpen. He had one clunker of an inning, giving up four runs in the fifth.

Series 6: Obamas, Homestead split

Obamas 9-5, Homestead 10-5

Pitcher use: R. Brown, Ryan need three games; D. Brown, W. Johnson need two. Gomez pitched one inning in each game.

Game One: Homestead 8, Obamas 4
WP: D. Brown (3-0)
LP: W. Johnson (2-1)
HR: Scales (4), J. Gibson (6)

Game Two: Obamas 10, Homestead 6
WP: Ryan (2-1)
LP: R. Brown (2-2)
HR: J. Gibson (7), C. Smith (5), Scales (5), Foxx 2 (4), Cochrane (1), W. Brown (4)

---

The two best records collided and left unchanged after splitting a pair of high-scoring games.

Homestead jumped on Walter Johnson for two runs in each of the first two innings and made the score 6-0 in the fifth. Dave Brown was touched up for four runs in the late innings, but the Obamas never really had the game in reach.

In the homer-filled second game, Nolan Ryan stuck out 12 but allowed three homers and walked five. Ray Brown, however, walked six and allowed three homers of his own, two of them to Jimmy Foxx.

Foxx had five RBIs in the second game, six for the series.

Series 6: Kennedys sweep Hilldale

Kennedys 8-7, Hilldale 4-10

Pitcher use: Gibson, SJ Williams need three games; Redding, Carlton need two games; Dismukes needs one game (at least). Fingers pitched one inning in finale,

Game One: Kennedys 18, Hilldale 1
WP: Carlton (1-2)
LP: Redding (0-2)
HR: McCovey (3)

Game Two: Kennedys 3, Hilldale 2
WP: B Gibson (4-0)
LP: SJ Williams (2-2)
Save: Fingers (3)
HR: Yastrzemski (3), Brett (2)

---

The first eight Kennedys to bat in the opener scored in an 11-run frame against Cannonball Redding, whose ERA rose to an ugly 11.14 in 21 innings.

Willie McCovey drove in five runs in the frame with a homer and single. He added another RBI in the seventh. Joe Morgan was 2-for-3 with three walks and four runs scored. Reggie Jackson went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs.

Dizzy Dismukes pitched well for three innings of relief but took a pounding in an additional two innings to preserve his bullpen mates.

Steve Carlton, meanwhile, was sharp, throwing five no-hit innings and finishing with a four-hitter. He walked five and struck out five.

In the second game, Bob Gibson also threw five no-hit innings and allowed four hits, although he gave up a run in the third on a hit batter and three walks. Rollie Fingers finished for his third save.

Smokey Joe Williams held the Kennedys to just five hits, but three went for extra bases, and all three scored.

Series 6: X-Giants sweep Ikes

X-Giants 8-7, Ikes 6-8

Pitcher use: Mendez needs four games, one as position player; Wynn and S. Jones need three games; Spahn needs two games. Tom Williams pitched two innings in finale.

Game One: X-Giants 2, Ikes 1
WP: S. Jones (2-1)
LP: Spahn (2-1)
Save: H. Smith (4)

Game Two: X-Giants 4, Ikes 3
WP: Tom Williams (1-0)
LP: Wynn (0-3)
HR: Dihigo (2), Dixon 2 (3)

---

The breaks went against the Ikes in the ninth innings.

Slim Jones had the Ikes baffled for eight no-hit innings in the first game, but the Ikes opened the ninth with three straight hits — single by pinch-hitter Enos Slaughter, double by Willie Mays, RBI single from Stan Musial — to pull within a run with the tying run on third.

Jones exited, Hilton Smith entered — and the Ikes didn't get a ball out of the infield.

Warren Spahn pitched well himself, allowing just seven hits in going the distance.

Early Wynn seemed intent on returning the favor in the second game. After Musial tripled in two runs in the first inning, Wynn allowed just four hits through eight innings and held a 3-1 lead going into the ninth.

But with one out in the ninth, Pop Lloyd singled, Martin Dihigo homered to tie the game, and Rap Dixon followed with his second homer of the contest.

Tom Williams, who relieved Jose Mendez to start the eighth, retired all six men he faced for the victory.

Dixon was 4-for-7 with a walk and two homers in the series.

Series 6: Franklins sweep Garfields

Franklins 8-7, Garfields 4-10

Pitcher use: Feller, Welch need three games; Hubbell, Young need two games; Dean, Covaleski, Spalding need one game. Clarkson pitched two innings in finale.

Game One: Franklins 5, Garfields 3
WP: Hubbell (3-0)
LP: Young
HR: Jennings (1), Ruth (9), Dickey (1)

Game Two: Franklins 9, Garfields 8 (11 innings)
WP: Dean (1-0)
LP: Spalding (0-1)
HR: Ruth (10), Ott (1), G. Davis (1)

---

Two-out thunder completed the sweep of a deceptively closes series for the Franklins.

Carl Hubbell overcame one bad inning in the opener — he gave up a three-run homer to Hughie Jennings in the third — as his teammates collected seven extra-base hits off Cy Young. Both hurlers went the distance.

The second game was a slugfest for six innings. Bob Feller was victimized by a pair of errors (Pie traynor and Arky Vaugh) in a three-run fifth, but the Garfields' 6-2 lead vanished in the bottom of the inning. Babe Ruth's three-run homer — his second of the series and 10th of the season — was part of a five-run uprising that began with two outs and none on.

After Feller (six innings) and Mickey Welch (seven) departed, the bullpens held sway. Stan Covaleski and Dizzy Dean each threw three scoreless frames, while John Clarkson worked his way in and out of trouble for two innings.

Al Spalding was one out away from his third straight perfect inning when King Kelly, playing third base, booted a Gabby Hartnett grounder. Lou Gehrig walked, and Vaughn followed with the game-winning single.

Notes from the quarter pole

The league is a bit more than 25 percent done, really. Six teams have played 13 games, four have played 12. Thirteen games is about 29 percent of the season, 12 is about 27 percent.

Anyway ... time to set down a few thoughts about this league so far.

* Time to take a break from the games and update the stats. The bookkeeping is a real chore, and probably the biggest reason I'm contemplating buying a PC laptop and getting the computer version of Strat.

* If/when I do that and try this league again, the Franklins will NOT have Paul Waner on the roster. I rostered Waner to have a second first baseman, but Lou Gehrig doesn't have an injury on his card (duh), and I'm not going to pinch-hit for Gehrig, so the only reason for Gehrig to leave a game is for a pinch-runner. Meanwhile, the backup CF to Joe DiMaggio (who DOES get hurt) is Mel Ott, and the backup LF to Babe Ruth is DiMaggio. Kiki Cuyler or Max Carey would be a lot more helpful, even if neither was the hitter that Waner was.

* Another team for which flexibility is proving an issue is the Ikes. The Ikes should have protected Jackie Robinson in Round 2 rather than Enos Slaughter.

* Only three teams are above .500 at this point. It's too soon to say for sure that the Obamas and Homestead are the class of the divisions, but that's the way it looks right now.

Game One was a tight, 1-1 affair until the seventh inning, when the Teddys strung six straight hits together, starting with an implausible home run by Eddie Collins.

Rube Waddell tossed a five-hitter with two walks, one hit batter and four strikeouts. His mound opponent, Pud Galvin, walked seven men in his seven innings, only one of whom scored.

Game Two seemed well in hand for the Teddys from the start, as Ty Cobb led off a three-run first a home run. But Cobb dropped a fly ball in the third to let the Garfields within a run, and the Teddys had difficulty denting the plate again against Tim Keefe.

Jesse Burkett had three RBI hits for the Garfields. Monte Ward drove home the decisive runs in the seventh. Nap Lajoie had three doubles of the Teddys in a 4-for-4 game.

It was a grand slam of a series, with a bases loaded homer in each of the three games.

Frank Robinson's long-ball barrage — the Obamas right fielder hammered four homers in the series and drove in eight runs— highlighted the three-game sweep of the Ikes.

Or maybe it was the 14-strikeout performance of Obamas starter Nolan Ryan, who tossed an eight-hitter in the series opener while Robinson drove in six runs, four of them with a first-inning grand slam.

Ryan himself — a notoriously poor hitter — went 2-for4 with a double and RBI as the Obamas chased Early Wynn early and then squeezed four more runs off Bob Lemon.

The Ikes led game two after four innings 2-0, but Jimmy Foxx hit a grand slam in the fifth after Bobby Doerr's error kept the inning alive. The Ikes moved back in front 6-5, but the Obamas added three more runs in an ugly eighth inning that started with an error by Eddie Mathews and included a run-scoring error by Duke Snider. The Ikes committed four errors in the game, resulting in six unearned runs.

The Obamas grabbed a 7-2 lead in the finale before Red Schoendienst hit a grand slam of his own in the bottom of the sixth. But the Ikes could muster nothing more off Eddie Plank and relievers Vic Willis and Lefty Gomez.

Series 5: Kennedys sweep Franklins

Kennedys 6-7, Franklins 6-7

Pitcher use: Seaver and Grove need three games, Marichal, Hoyt and Vance need two games, Feller and B Gibson need one game. Fingers pitched one inning in finale.

Game One: Kennedys 7, Franklins 4
WP: B Gibson (3-0)

Game Three: Kennedy 8, Franklins 7
WP: Seaver (1-0)
LP: Grove (1-3)
Save: Fingers (2)
HR: Yount (2), Gehrig (4), Vaughan (1)

---

The Kennedys kept Babe Ruth in the park, and scored plenty of runs themselves in the series sweep.

Game One pivoted on a shoddy relief outing by Herb Pennock, who entered in the eighth inning after the Franklins had taken a 4-3 lead. The first five Kennedys reached base on the lefty, and four of them scored.

Game Two saw Dazzy Vance rocked for five runs in the first two innings. He gave way to a pinch hitter, and Waite Hoyt held the Kennedys to one run in the next four innings as the Franklins clawed their way back against Juan Marichal. But Hoyt, after retiring the first two men in the eighth, weakened, and Pennock again threw gasoline on the fire. The Kennedys scored five runs, all with two outs, and walked away.

George Brett hit for the cycle in this game, and Joe Morgan had a grand slam.

In Game Three, Robin Yount's three-run homer highlighted a five-run fourth inning. The Kennedys led 6-2 after five innings, but the Franklins tied it with two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings, aided by a rare Luis Aparicio error and back-to-back wild pitches from Tom Seaver. But a pinch-hit RBI single from Carl Yastrzemski put the Kennedys back in front, and Rollie Fingers staggered through the ninth to nail down the victory.

Ruth, who entered the game with eight home runs in 10 games, went 3-for-10 with three walks and three runs scored.

Series 5: X-Giants take 2 of 3 from Homestead

X-Giants 6-7, Homestead 9-4

Pitcher use: Dihigo needs four games (and one as position player); Paige and Donaldson three games; R. Foster and Manning two games; W. Bell and R. Brown one game. Matlock pitched less than an inning, Radcliffe one inning in finale.

Game One: X-Giants 29, Homestead 1
WP: R. Foster (1-1)
LP: R. Brown (2-1)
HR: Dixon (1), CP Bell (1), Radcliffe (1), R. Foster (1), J Gibson (5)
Game Two: X-Giants 4, Homestead 2
WP: Donaldson (1-1)
LP: Manning (1-1)
HR: J. Gibson (6)
Game Three: Homestead 5, X-Giants 4
WP: Paige (2-1)
LP: Dihigo(1-2)
Save: W. Bell (2)
HR: C. Smith (4), Suttles (4)

---

The previously punchless X-Giants had an astounding first game. They had scored 27 runs in the first four series (10 games) combined; they scored 29 in their 11th game.
The X-Giants batted around in each of the first four innings.
They scored four runs in the first off Ray Brown, highlighted by Rap Dixon's three-run homer.
They scored five more in the second, all off Brown, who did not retire a batter in the frame.
They scored seven runs in the third off Frank Wickware, with Double Duty Radcliffe — getting his first start of the season behind the plate — cranking a grand slam.
They further pummeled Wickware for seven more runs in the fourth inning,
After taking a few innings off, they clanged William Bell for four more runs in the ninth, with Rube Foster hitting a three-run dinger.
Pop Lloyd went 6-for-7 with four runs scored. Dixon was 4-for-6 with a homer and triple, scored five times and drove in seven. Ben Taylor was 5-for-5 with two walks, three runs and four RBIs. Radcliffe had five RBIs. Everybody in the X-Giants lineup scored at least twice except Foster.
Lost in the flurry of runs was a fine pitching performance by Foster, who allowed seven hits , walked two and fanned 11.
John Donaldson was almost as impressive in Game 2 for the X-Giants. He threw an eight-hitter and pitched out of two early jams. Biz Mackey drove in two runs for the X-Giants.
The third game belonged to Satchel Paige and Chino Smith for seven innings. Smith hit a two-run homer in the first off Martin Dihigo and triggered the three-run sixth with a lead-off double. Paige allowed just four harmless singles through seven but weakened in the eighth. Leroy Matlock entered to get Pete Hill and Lloyd; William Bell struggled through the ninth to get the save.

Series 5: Crawfords take two of three from Hilldale

Hilldale 4-8, Crawfords 7-5

Pitcher use: Brewer and Byrd need three games off, Winters and Day two games off, SJ Williams and Trent one game. Mathis pitched one inning, Hensley two, in finale.

Game 1: Hilldale 4, Crawfords 2
WP: SJ Williams (2-1)
LP: Rogan (1-1)

Game 2: Crawfords 5, Hilldale 4
WP: Day (2-1)
LP: Winters (0-2)
Sv: Streeter (1)
HR: Beckwith (2), Lundy (1)

Game 3: Crawfords 11, Hilldale 6
WP: Brewer (1-1)
LP: Byrd (0-3)
HR: Wells 2 (4), Byrd 1, Charleston (2), Wright (4)

---

Bullet Joe Rogan didn't fix what ails the Crawfords bullpen.

Rogan took the hill for the ninth inning of the opener to protect a 2-1 lead. He left six batters later having allowed four hits, one walk and three runs. Smokey Joe Williams went the distance for Hilldale, allowing just four hits. Three of them came in succession in the sixth inning, resulting in the Crawfords' two scores.

But the Crawfords won the next two. Leon Day was strong through eight innings but got into trouble after a John Beckwith error with two outs in the ninth. Sam Streeter came in to retire Turkey Stearnes with the bases loaded to end it.

The Crawfords chipped away at Nip Winters and reliever Piggie Powell with solo runs in five different innings, including homers by Beckwith and Dick Lundy.

The finale was one-sided. The Crawfords blasted Bill Byrd for 11 runs, nine earned, in six innings, including three-run taters from Oscar Charleston and Wild Bill Wright. Charleston had four RBIs in the game and Louis Santop added three.

Chet Brewer wasn't great, but he was good enough. He and reliever Verdell Mathis, who worked the ninth inning, coaxed five double plays from Hillsdale, three of them started by Ray Dandridge.
