The 1969 Dodgers were outscored 21-17, but won four close games to upset the favored 2009 Dodgers.

The opener in the 2009 version of Dodger Stadium proved the highest scoring tilt of the series. Andy Kosco and Jeff Torborg each singled home runs in the top of the second off Randy Wolf, and the 69ers added another in the third on two singles and a sac fly. But the 09ers had it evened by the end of the fourth, with a pair of RBI outs by Casey Blake and two runs scored by Manny Ramirez. Matt Kemp homered in the fifth off Claude Osteen , and James Loney added a solor shot off Don Drysdale n the eighth to make it 5-3. Willie Davis tied the game with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth against Jonathan Broxton, but in the bottom of the inning Juan Pierre singled, stole second. took third on a wild pitch and scored on Kemp's single.

Bill Singer responded with a one-hitter in Game Two. Russell Martin's leadoff double in the third inning was the only man the 09 Dodgers got into scoring position. Singer faced just two men over the maximum; he hit Andre Either with a pitch in the first inning and walked Either in the seventh but got a double play from Loney. Tom Haller had a pair of RBI hits in the fourth and seventh innings.

The series moved to 1969 for Game Three, and the visitors romped on a pair of homers and some shoddy outfield defense by the home squad. Chad Billingsley not only threw a four-hit shutout, he homered off Don Sutton in the second inning and added a pair of singles. Davis and Bill Russell dropped back-to-back fly balls in a three-run third inning, and Loney hit a three-run homer to cap a four-run ninth off Al McBean.

The 09 Dodgers appeared to have the series under control after winning the 12-inning Game Four. Blake and Kosco traded solo homers, The 69 Dodgers took a 2-1 lead when Blake, playing first base for the injured Loney, booted a two-out grounder, but Kemp doubled home Orlando Hudson with two outs in the ninth off Osteen to tie it. Ramirez doubled home Kemp in the 12th to make a winner of Broxton.

The 09 Dodgers took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of Game Five when. with two outs, Singer hit Either with a pitch and Blake homered. That 2-0 lead lasted into the eighth, when Manny Mota hit a one-out single and Wes Parker doubled off Ramon Troncoso. Jim Lefebvre's groundball scored Mota and moved Parker to third. Parker then scored on a Troncoso wild pitch.

Ronald Belisaro got the call for the bottom of the ninth. Tommy Hutton, pinch-hitting for Torborg, walked to open the frame, and another pinch-hitter, Haller, doubled him home for the winner.

Kosco was Game Six's pinch-hit hero. Sutton and Jon Garland matched shutout innings into the eighth. Bill Sudakis doubled in the top of the eighth, and with two outs Kosco pinch-hit for Sutton and hammered his second homer of the series. Jim Brewer completed the five-hit shutout, and the series was evened. (Garland allowed just two runs in his two starts but got zero run support.)

Game Seven matched Osteen and Billingsley. Ted Sizemore hit an unlikely two-run homer off Billingsley in the third inning for a 2-0 lead. Pierre's fifth inning sac fly scored Rafael Furcal to make it 2-, but the 09 Dodgers didn't get another man into scoring position until Kemp and Ramirez hit back-to-back singles with two out in the eighth. Pete Mikkelson relieved Osteen at that point and got Blake to ground out. Kosco doubled home Mota in the top of the ninth to add an insurance run, and Brewer nailed it down in the ninth.

Player of the series: Singer allowed just two runs in 14 innings over two starts, but we'll go with platoon outfielder Kosco, who was 7-for-15 with two homers, a double, five RBIs and three runs scored.

Player availability: Brewer pitched six innings in the final fout games. Even with two off days mixed in, don't use him for more than an inning in Game One, and if he pitches in that one, sit him in Game Two.

Projected rotation: Singer-Sutton-Osteen-Singer-(Sutton)-(Osteen)-(Singer)

The supposedly light-hitting 1969 Astros put up more than six runs a game to take this series.

Larry Dierker threw seven shutout innings in the opener at the Astrodome. Johnny Edwards plated the first run of the series with a second-inning sac fly to score Doug Rader. Jimmy Wynn made it 3-0 with a two-run homer in the sixth off Roy Oswalt, and the 69 Astros pieced together two more runs in the seventh off Felipe Paulino. Geoff Blue singled home two in the eighth off Jim Bouton, but Fred Gladding worked a scoreless ninth to wrap it up.

Wandy Rodriguez matched Dierker's outing in Game Two. Lance Berkman's three-run homer highlighted a four-run first against Denny LeMaster, and Carlos Lee added a solo shot in the fifth. Michael Bourn had three hits, two steals and two runs. The 69 Astros put up a four-run ninth against Tim Byrdak and LaTroy Hawkins, but it wasn't enough.

The series shifted to 2009 and Minute Maid Park for Game Three, Joe Morgan hit a two-run homer in the first inning against Brian Moehler, Jim Wynn added a solo blast in the third, and the 69 'Stros scored three more in the four and two in the fifth for a 8-0 lead. The home team broke through against Don Wilson for two in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the sixth to chase the big righty. Jim Ray struck out two with the bases loaded to end the sixth inning and fanned two more in a scoreless seventh, and Wade Blasingame induced a pair of double-play grounders in the final two frames.

Dierker threw six scoreless innings to open Game Four, and Rader staked him to a 2-0 lead with a two-out single in the first. Bob Watson and Tommy Davis, getting starts against lefty Mike Hampton, had RBI singles in the third. The 4-0 score held into the seventh, when Hunter Pence broke through with a homer. Miguel Tejada singled two runs home in the eighth to make it 4-3. but Jose Valverde melted down in the top of the ninth, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks before Hawkins got out of the inning. Pinch-hitter Curt Blefary had two of the RBIs.

Wynn homered in the first inning of Game Five (the Toy Cannon's third of the series), and Rader had a two-run double in a four-run fourth inning as the 69ers staked Tom Griffin to a 5-0 lead. Lee got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth with his second homer of the series, and Bourn picked up RBIs in the fifth and seventh innings. But Gladding induced double-play grounders in the eighth and ninth to nail down the game and the series.

Player of the series: Jimmy Wynn hit three homers and scored seven runs. He gets the nod over Dierker, who provided 15 innings of three-run ball in two starts.

Player availability: No issues for the 69 Astros.

The 2009 Cleveland Indians lost the first two games of the series -- at home, no less -- but still managed to advance.

Sudden Sam McDowell overpowered the 09 Tribe in the opener, The home team scratched out a first inning run on two singles and a grounder, but McDowell went the distance on a five-hitter, walking two and fanning nine. Hawk Harrelson homered for one run and singled home the other.

Luis Tiant outdueled Justin Masterson in a classic Game Two. The sole run came in the third inning. Larry Brown reached on an error by Luis Valbuena to lead off the frame. Jose Cardenal singled Brown to third. Masterson induced a double-play grounder from Lou Klimchock, with Brown scoring. And that was it; El Tiante scattered nine hits in another complete game, this one a shutout.

The series shifted to 1969 and the "Mistake by the Lake," Municipal Stadium, for Game Three. The two teams traded first inning runs -- Grady Sizemore homering, Klimchock tripling and scoring on Tony Horton's sac fly -- but the 09 Tribe scored twice in the second off Dick Ellsworth and were never caught. Russ Snyder doubled home a run with two outs in the sixth inning, but Sizemore threw out Duke Sims at the plate in a pivotal play.

Game Four was the first blowout. The 09 Indians scored twice in the first inning and three more in the third, on three doubles (two from Asdrubal Cabrera), a triple, two singles, a walk, a stolen base and an error. Steve Hargan retired 10 in a row after that for the 69ers, but it was too big a deficit. Sizemore hit a grand slam in the eighth off Mike Paul. Mickey Brantley and Cabrera had two RBIs apiece. Vern Fuller had three hits, two runs and two RBIs for the 1969 team, including a homer.

With the series tied, McDowell came through again for the 1969 Indians. This time he went eight innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits. Shin-Soo Choo reached him for a solo homer in the sixth. McDowell's teammates scored four runs off Cliff Lee, with most of the damage coming from the bottom of the order. Max Alvis scored twice, Fuller had three singles and Brown doubled home a run. Snyder had a pinch-hit homer off Joe Smith in the eighth.

Tiant appeared to have the 1969 team headed to the second round early in Game Six. Masterson wild-pitched runs home in the second and third innings, but the visitors left four men in scoring position in both innings. Tiant held a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. Choo led off with a double. One out later, Ryan Garko homered to tie the score. An out later, Andy Marte doubled. Snyder committed a one-base error on Kelly Stoppach's ball, and Sizemore put the home team ahead with a base hit. Valbuena doubled home two more runs in the seventh as the 09ers pulled away.

The two teams exchanged solo homers in the second inning of Game Seven -- Frank Baker for the 69ers, Choo for the 09ers -- and the home team strung together four singles and a walk for two runs in the third. Fuller doubled for two runs and a tie in the top of the sixth, while Horacio Pina tossed 3.1 shutout innings in relief of Ellsworth to keep the 1969 team in the contest,

Stan Williams relieved Pina to start the bottom of the eighth. Mark DeRosa led off with an infield single that Klimchock compounded with a two-base error. Brantley singled DeRosa home for the lead, then stole second and scored on Jamie Carroll's base hit. The 09 team needed that second run, as Sims singled home Jose Cardenal in the top of the ninth off Kerry Wood, but Wood fanned Harrelson to wrap up the contest.

Player of the series: I'll give it to McDowell for his two brilliant starts in a losing cause.

Player availability: Travis Hafner is injured, If active for the second round, he can't play until Game Six. Masteron cannot pitch until Game Three.

Projected rotation: Lee-Laffey-Masterson-Jeremy Sowers-(Lee)-(Laffey)-(Masterson)

The shutout ruled in this series. The 2009 Padres threw three shutouts at the 1969 Padres, who recorded one themselves.

Kevin Correia set the tone in the opener with a five-hitter. He walked one and struck out seven. Joe Niekro was burned for three unearned runs in the third inning, but he also allowed two earned runs. Chase Headley gathered three RBIs, and David Eckstein scored twice.

Clay Kirby, with relief help from Billy McCool and Jack Baldschun, returned the favor in Game Two. Kirby allowed four hits and two walks in seven innings while pitching around a pair of errors. His hitters put together a two-run inning on four straight scratch singles in the second against Chris Young, and Nate Colbert bashed a no-questions homer in the third.

The series moved from 2009's Petco Park to 1969's Jack Murphy Stadium for Game Three. The visitors scratched out four one-run innings in the first six against Al Santorini, with two of the runs unearned. (The innings involved two sac bunts, two sac flies and two defensive errors.) The home team broke out in the sixth against Chad Gaudin for three runs, but could do nothing in the final three frames against the 2009 bullpen.

Mat Latos dominated Game Four with a two-hit shutout. He walked four but got a double-play ball and a caught stealing, so he faced only four batters over the minimum. David Eckstein hit an unlikely three-run homer off Dick Kelley in the second inning, and Evereth Cabrera had three hits, including a double and a triple.

Niekro yielded a pair of runs in the top of the first inning of Game Five, but Ed Spiezo countered with a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning. Nick Hundley tied it in the fourth with a solo shot, but Al Ferrara countered with a solo homer in the sixth. That concluded the scoring.

Back in Petco, Kirby tossed another gem in Game Six, going seven innings and allowing just one run (he walked four men in the fourth inning). Colbert, Spiezio and Ferrara each homered as the 69 team built a 5-1 lead. Johnny Podres gave up a two-run homer to Hundley in the ninth to narrow the margin and set up a save opportunity for Frank Reberger.

Game Seven was essentially decided quickly. In the bottom of the first, Eckstein singled and Adrian Gonzalez homered. One out later, Headley singled and scored on a double by Max Venable. Santorini settled after that, allowing just four more baserunners in his seven innings, but Gaudin allowed just five hits in seven innings. Luck Gregorson and Heath Bell finished off the 2009 team's third whitewashing of the series.

Co-players of the series: Clay Kirby of the 69 Padres allowed one run in 14 innings for his two wins; Chad Gaudin allowed three runs in 13 innings and won the decisive seventh game. They share the honor.

Player availability: The bullpen will be rested and ready for the second round. The rotation will be largely madeover.
