The shutout ruled in this series. The 2009 Padres threw three shutouts at the 1969 Padres, who recorded one themselves.

Kevin Correia set the tone in the opener with a five-hitter. He walked one and struck out seven. Joe Niekro was burned for three unearned runs in the third inning, but he also allowed two earned runs. Chase Headley gathered three RBIs, and David Eckstein scored twice.

Clay Kirby, with relief help from Billy McCool and Jack Baldschun, returned the favor in Game Two. Kirby allowed four hits and two walks in seven innings while pitching around a pair of errors. His hitters put together a two-run inning on four straight scratch singles in the second against Chris Young, and Nate Colbert bashed a no-questions homer in the third.

The series moved from 2009's Petco Park to 1969's Jack Murphy Stadium for Game Three. The visitors scratched out four one-run innings in the first six against Al Santorini, with two of the runs unearned. (The innings involved two sac bunts, two sac flies and two defensive errors.) The home team broke out in the sixth against Chad Gaudin for three runs, but could do nothing in the final three frames against the 2009 bullpen.

Mat Latos dominated Game Four with a two-hit shutout. He walked four but got a double-play ball and a caught stealing, so he faced only four batters over the minimum. David Eckstein hit an unlikely three-run homer off Dick Kelley in the second inning, and Evereth Cabrera had three hits, including a double and a triple.

Niekro yielded a pair of runs in the top of the first inning of Game Five, but Ed Spiezo countered with a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning. Nick Hundley tied it in the fourth with a solo shot, but Al Ferrara countered with a solo homer in the sixth. That concluded the scoring.

Back in Petco, Kirby tossed another gem in Game Six, going seven innings and allowing just one run (he walked four men in the fourth inning). Colbert, Spiezio and Ferrara each homered as the 69 team built a 5-1 lead. Johnny Podres gave up a two-run homer to Hundley in the ninth to narrow the margin and set up a save opportunity for Frank Reberger.

Game Seven was essentially decided quickly. In the bottom of the first, Eckstein singled and Adrian Gonzalez homered. One out later, Headley singled and scored on a double by Max Venable. Santorini settled after that, allowing just four more baserunners in his seven innings, but Gaudin allowed just five hits in seven innings. Luck Gregorson and Heath Bell finished off the 2009 team's third whitewashing of the series.

Co-players of the series: Clay Kirby of the 69 Padres allowed one run in 14 innings for his two wins; Chad Gaudin allowed three runs in 13 innings and won the decisive seventh game. They share the honor.

Player availability: The bullpen will be rested and ready for the second round. The rotation will be largely madeover.

Projected rotation: Correia-Jake Peavy-Gaudin-Clayton Richards-(Correia)-(Stauffer)-(Gaudin)

On paper, there was no larger mismatch in the first round than this one, and it played out that way. The 2009 Orioles held just one lead in the series, and that lead lasted just two innings.

Mike Cuellar allowed just five hits in the opener in 1969's Memorial Stadium. Brook Robinson drove home the first run with a double in the second inning; Frank Robinson belted a two-run homer in the seventh. The 09 Orioles got a ninth-inning two-run homer from Ty Wigginton off Dick Hall to make it a one-run loss.

Dave McNally shut out the 09 Birds for six innings in Game Two and drove home a run himself with a safety squeeze bunt. But in the seventh he gave up a homer to Luke Scott and an RBI triple to Brian Roberts to tie the game. Cla Meredith opened the eighth by allowing singles to Davy Johnson and Frank Robinson. George Sherrill entered to face Boog Powell, who promptly homered for the final margin. Pete Richert bailed Eddie Watt out of a ninth-inning jam for the save.

The series moved to Camden Yards for Game Three, and the visitors took control early. Frank Robinson hit a two-run homer in the first. Brooks Robinson cracked a solo shot in the second. Frank Robinson hit another two-run homer in the sixth. Jim Palmer took a shutout into the eighth, and Marcelino Lopez finished it up.

The 09 Orioles brought Jeremy Guthrie back on short rest for the elimination game, and staked him to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Cesar Izturis singled home Scott and Wigginton for the only lead the 09 Birds would hold in the series. Frank Robinson hit his fourth homer of the series in the fourth inning to make it 2-1, and in the fifth the 69 Orioles put up three runs to chase Guthrie -- Elrod Hendricks singled, Mark Belanger walked, Don Buford doubled to tie the game, designated hitter Dave May singled Belanger home for the lead, and Frank Robinson plated Buford with a sac fly. Paul Blair added a two-run homer in the seventh for the final margin. Tom Phoebus went six innings, and Hall and Dave Leonhard combined to face just nine men in the final three innings.

Player of the Series: Frank Robinson hit .467 with four home runs and nine RBIs.

Player availablity: Everyone will be rested for the second round.

The underdog 2009 Pirates -- losers of 99 games that season -- mixed and matched their way to a series win over their 1969 counterparts.

Game One, played in 1969's Forbes Field, went to the visitors. Willie Stargell twice drove home Roberto Clemente to give Jim Bunning the lead in the first and third innings, but Bunning gave up two runs in the fifth to give the 09 Pirates a 3-2 lead. Stargell and Carl Taylor opened the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back doubles to tie the game, but Zack Duke kept Taylor from advancing, and the 69 team never again got a man into scoring position. Luke Walker and Lou Marson threw three scoreless frames, but in the top of the ninth Willie Stargell committed a key error, and three unearned runs resulted.

The 69 Pirates bounced back with a seesaw win in Game Two. Stargell, who had three doubles in Game One, added three more in Game Two, driving in three runs in the process. Fred Patek had four hits, including a pair of doubles. Manny Sanguillen sustained an injury that kept him out until the final game of the series.

The series shifted to 2009 and PNC Park for the third game. The 09 team benefited from errors by Clemente, Matty Alou and losing pitcher Luke Walker for three unearned runs. Ross Ohlendorf spun seven shutout innings on two hits, but couldn't get through the eighth. The 69 Pirates tied the game at 4 in the eighth, but Walker and Alou's errors in the bottom of the inning set up the winner for the home team.

Steve Blass twice worked out of bases loaded jams in the first four innings of Game Four, and he scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning.Joe Gibbon went two innings for the save.

Bunning was the story of Game Five, tossing a four-hit shutout. Clemente's first inning homer gave him all the runs he needed, but Bill Mazeroski singled home Taylor in the second, Duke and Jeff Karstens allowed no further runs, but Bunning faced only two batters over the minimum with the help of three double plays.

The 69 Pirates thus returned to their home park needing just one more win, but Lastings Milledge tripled home two runs in the first inning against Veale, and Paul Maholm and Joel Hanrahan combined to allow just one.

The decisive Game Seven also opened with the visitors putting up a crooked number in the first inning. Facing Dock Ellis, Andy LaRoche singled, Garrett Jones walked, Ryan Doumit doubled, Brandon Moss singled and Ramon Vazquez added a sac fly. The home team struck back quickly -- Alou and Al Oliver hit back-to-back doubles and Clemente singled, but Stargell bounced into a double play. Ohlendorf worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth to preserve the 3-2 lead as Ellie left for a pinch hitter, and reliever Marson promptly yielded a two-run homer to Doumit. Stargell's solo shot off Matt Capps in the ninth was too little, too late.
