The wild-card entrants weren't expected to make a splash in Tournament Three, but the 1961 Cardinals made one by ousting the top-seeded 2019 Astros.

Game One, in Houston's Minute Maid Park, followed the expected pattern. Justin Verlander held the Cards to two runs (a two-run homer by Carl Sawatski in the second) in six innings, and the Astros scored multiple runs in four different innings. George Springer hit a three-run homer, and Houston garnered 11 extra base hits.

Houston seemed to have Game Two under control as well. Josh Reddick clubbed a three-run homer off Curt Simmons, and Gerrit Cole handed a 3-1 lead to the bullpen after seven innings. But the first three men to face Ryan Pressley all singled. Pressly gave way to Will Harris; he faced five men and retired only one of them. Hector Rondon came in, and he eventually ended the inning -- but only after giving up four hits himself. The Cardinals batted 14 men in the eighth and scored 10 runs. They added another in the ninth and won going away.

The tied series shifted to 1961 and Busch Stadium I, aka Sportsman's Park, for Game Three. St. Louis starter Ray Sadecki struggled early -- the Astros scored single runs in three of the first four inning -- but didn't allow a hit after the fourth. The Cards scored three runs in the bottom of the third on three singles, a walk and a double, and that was enough.

Bob Gibson went the distance in Game Four, allowing an unearned run on six hits. He walked four and struck out 13, including the final three hitters of the game. Alex Grammas hit a two-run double off loser Aaron Sanchez in the second inning. 

The Cardinals wrapped up the series by barraging Verlander with longballs in Game Five. Sawatski hit a pair of solo homers, the second one coming back-to-back with a Joe Cunningham homer. Bill White hit a three-run homer in the seventh off Joe Biagini, and Stan Musial drove in two with a double in the eighth. Lindy McDaniel inherited a jam in the eighth and got out of it, and was credited with the save despite allowing two runs in the ninth.

The Dodgers scored just nine runs in the six games.

Two of them came in the Dodger Stadium opener, and they were enough for Don Sutton. Sutton allowed five hits in eight innings, one a homer by Chris Iannetta. Willie Crawford singled home two runs in the fourth. Jim Brewer struck out two of the three men he faced in the ninth.

Jason Marquis and a host of relievers evened the series in Game Two. Marquis allowed two hits and one run in five innings, leaving for a pinch-hitter in the top of the sixth (Iannetta grounded into double play to kill a rally). Franklin Morales, Rafael Betancourt, Joe Beimel and Matt Daley followed, shutting out the Dodgers over the final four innings. Todd Helton drove in three runs for Colorado.

The series shifted to Coors Field. Troy Tulowitzki homered in a three-run third inning off Andy Messersmith, and Jorge de la Rosa held the Dodgers scoreless though six innings. The Dodgers plated two runs in the seventh, but Dexter Fowler singled in a run in the bottom of the seventh and Brad Hawpe homered in the eighth.

Garret Atkins hit a grand slam off Claude Osteen in the first inning of Game Four, and the Dodgers never seriously challenged. Atkins added two more RBIs in a three-run fifth inning. Aaron Cook went eight innings for the win, allowed three runs on a pair of homers. 

Sutton staved off elimination with a Game Five gem. He allowed four hits in 8.1 innings, with Pete Richert getting the final two outs after a Tulowitzki single. Ron Cey homered in the fourth off Ubaldo Jimenez for the only run of the game.

Jason Marquis went eight-plus innings in Game Six, shutting out the Dodgers on six hits. Two of them came from the first two hitters of the ninth, after which the Rockies used Beimel for one out and Betancourt for the final two. Hawpe homered in the second off loser Tommy John, and Atkins drove in two runs in a three-run third.

Player availability: An injury to Dexter Fowler will have expired by the start of the third round, and with two days off the Colorado bullpen will be rested.

Jim Northrup's grand slam highlighted a five-run sixth inning for the Tigers in the opener in Miller Park. Dick McAuliffe also homered in the inning. Norm Cash scored three runs for Detroit.

Milwaukee evened the series as Ryan Braun broke a 5-5 tie with a two-run homer in the seventh inning of Bob L. Miller. The Tigers had tied the game in the top of the inning on consecutive homers by McAuliffe and Northrup. Yasmani Grandal hit a three-run homer in the sixth for the Brewers.

The series moved to Tiger Stadium, where Hernan Perez got his first start of the tournament and made the most of it. The infielder doubled, homered and singled off Mickey Lolich to drive in three runs. Jordan Lyles allowed a two-run homer in the first to Norm Cash, but he and relievers Alex Claudio and Drew Pomeranz held Detroit scoreless the rest of the way.

Game Four was the backbreaker for the Tigers. Joe Coleman handed a 4-3 lead over to bullpen ace John Hiller for the ninth, but Hiller walked Eric Thames and pinch-hitter Jesus Aguilar. Orlando Arcia then tripled to give the Brewers the lead. Hiller stranded Arcia, but Josh Hader didn't allow a ball out of the infield in the bottom of the ninth.

Milwaukee wrapped up the series in Game Five. Christian Yelich homered twice off Jim Perry, while Zach Davies held the Tigers to two runs in six innings and four Brewers relievers combined for three scoreless innings to wrap it up.

Player availability: No issues for Milwaukee going into Round Three.
