Two deeply flawed teams played a competitive series that featured only one game that ended with a narrow margin.
Game One: Padres 9, Orioles 3: Bill Greif allowed two runs in 7.1 innings for the win. The Padres.scored six runs in the second to knock Kevin Gausman from the game, with Dave Winfield and Nate Colbert hitting back-to-back homers amd Johnny Grubb driving in a pair with a base hit.
Game Two: Orioles 10, Padres 2: Manny Machado homered in his first three at-bats as the Birds scored three runs in each of the first three innings. Wade Miley went seven innings for the win, allowing just one run.
Game Three: Orioles 11, Padres 3: Seth Smith scored four runs, reaching on one single and three bases on balls. Welington Castillo drove in four runs with his three hits, which included a homer and a double. Dylan Bundy threw five no-hit innings but allowed hits to each of the three men he faced in the sixth, after which four relievers got three outs apiece.
Game Four: Padres 7, Orioles 3: Baltmore scored four runs in the first off Randy Jones, but the lefty then stablized for 6.1 scoreless innings. Gurbb's three-run homer in the sixth put San Diego ahead to stay, and Vicente Romo got five outs for the save.
Game Five: Padres 8, Orioles 1: Greif allowed one run on eight hits in his complete game win while the Padres again roughed up Gausman (seven runs in four innings). Dave Roberts homered and drove in three runs and Grubb had a pair of RBIs.
Game Six: Orioles 7, Padres 4 (10 innings): San Diego took the lead in a potential series clincher Winfield homered to lead off the top of the 10th, but Romo could not hold the lead. Castillo singled i Trey Mancini with two outs to tie the score in the bottom of the frame, and Chris Davis followed with a three-run homer to force a Game Seven. Mychal Givens, who allowed the one run in three innings of relief, was credited with the win.
Game Seven: Orioles 9, Padres 5: Machado went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer adn scored three times. Jonathan Schoop homered in the seventh to put the Birds ahead to stay. Zach Britton, the first of three relievers after Bundy allowed three runs in six innings, got the win.
Projected rotation: Gausman-Jimenez-Bundy-Miley-(Gausman)-(Jimenez)-(Bundy). Givens should not pitch in the first game of the second round.
