Arizona prevailed in series of low-scoring, close games.

Jake Lamb hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the opener in Chase Field, and Zack Greinke made it stand up with a complete-game five hitter, with Joe Harris' solo shot in the fourth the only tally for Boston. Howard Ehmke allowed six hits in his eight-inning complete game loss.

The Diamondbacks took a 4-1 lead into the ninth inning of the second game, but Fernando Rodney allowed four runs in the ninth on five hits and a walk. Red Ruffing picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief, and Jack Quinn pitched the ninth for the save.

The series moved to 1924 and Fenway Park, where the Diamondbacks responded in Game Three with their own ninth-inning comeback. Quinn carried a 3-0 lead into the eighth, when a Howie Shanks error allowed a run. In the ninth, Red Sox left fielder Bobby Veach committed a pair of two-base errors after Paul Goldschmidt drew a walk, and Brandon Drury capped the rally with a triple. Rodney threw a 1-2-3 inning, and the Diamondbacks had a pivotal win.

Chris Herrmann hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning of Game Four to spoil a stellar outing by Ehmke, who had allowed just four hits in the first nine innings. Arizona got five innings of scoreless relief, although Rodney loaded the bases with two outs in the 10th with two walks and a hit batter.

Game Five also went extras, but Arizona erupted off Ted Wingfield for four runs in the top of the 10th to put it away. Gregor Blanco tripled home two runs, and Goldschmidt followed with a homer. Greinke allowed five hits in 7.1 innings for the no-decision, and Archie Bradley retired all five men he faced for the win.
