The home team won only once in the seven games, but that was enough to pull the Diamondbacks through to the third round.

Camilo Pascual outdueled Zack Greinke in the opener at Chase Field. The Twins' curveball specialist didn't allow a baserunner until a fifth-inning walk or a hit until Greinke himself doubled in the sixth. Billy Martin's three-run homer in the eighth off the Snakes' third reliever of the inning gave the Twins a 6-0 lead, which was sharply reduced in the ninth by Chris Owings' three-run shot.

Jack Kralick not only worked seven innings for the win in Game Two, he cracked a solo homer in the second. Harmon Killebrew homered in the first to give the Twins a 3-0 lead. Kralick allowed three earned runs.

The series moved to 1961 and Metropolitian Stadium, and the D'backs got their first win behind Taijuan Walker. He allowed two runs in seven innings. Jake Lamb homered twice off loser Pedro Ramos.

Arizona took advantage of Minnesota's shoddy glove work in Game Four. Two of the Snakes' three runs off Jim Kaat were unearned, and the defensive problems went beyond the three errors to catchable balls not reached. Don Mincher homered off Zack Godley for Minnesota's only tally.

Greinke allowed hits to the first two Twins batters, but A.J. Pollock gunned down Lenny Green at the plate for the first out, and the Twins got just one more hit the rest of the way. Greinke walked five and struck out eight, seven of them in the final three innings. Brandon Drury doubled, singled and homered in four at-bats.

The series returned to Arizona, and the Twins pummeled Patrick Corbin for seven runs in five innings, highlighted by Earl Battey's two-run homer in a four-run fifth. Three of the runs were unearned. Kralick allowed one run on six hits in eight innings for the win.

The climatic Game Seven lived up to its billing. Arizona led 3-0 after three and 4-1 after four, but Jim Lemon homered in the sixth and Bob Allison brought home another run with a seventh-inning sac fly. The Twins got two hits in the ninth off Fernando Rodney, but Jeff Mathis threw out Green trying to steal second, and Rodney struck out Allison to end the game and the series.

Arizona's bullpen has no restrictions going into the third round.

The Twins got just one quality start in five games and were outscored in the series but still prevailed.

Game One, in old Yankee Stadium, set the template for the series. The Yankees held a 7-4 lead after six innings, but the Twins scored three in the seventh and three more in the eighth and hung on in the ninth. The Yankees left the bases loaded in the final frame. Five of the Twins runs were unearned.

Jack Kralick held the Yankees scoreless through eight innings in Game Two. Ray Moore staggered through the middle of the Yankee order after relieving with one out and two on; for the second straight game the Yankees left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth of a one-run loss.

The series move to Metropolitian Stadium for Game Three, and Babe Ruth made himself right at home. Held without an RBI in the first two games, the Bambino drove in seven in this one, with two homers and a single. Pedro Ramos got just three outs for the Twins, while native Minnesotan Bullet Joe Bush went the distance for New York.

The Yankees appeared destined to even the series early in Game Four, racking Jim Kaat for six runs (four unearned) in the first two innings and holding a 7-0 lead after five. But the Twins got five in the bottom of the sixth off Bob Shawkey, three more in the seventh to take the lead and a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Relievers Bob Pleis, Don Lee and Danny McDevitt combined for three hitless innings.

The Yankees batted around in the first inning again in Game Five, with Wally Pipp doubling home two runs, but Camilo Pascual left the bases loaded in that inning and steadied after that. The Twins chipped away at Herb Pennock, tying the game in the fourth and taking the lead in the fifth. Bob Allison homered twice, both solo shots. The Yankees rallied in the ninth, but with a run in and a man on, McDevitt got Ruth to fly to center and Ramos got Meusel on a fly to right to wrap up the upset.
