The 69 Dodgers couldn't win in Wrigley Field; the 69 Cubs couldn't win in Chavez Ravine. The Dodgers, as the number two seed in the George bracket, had the extra home game and took the series with an extra inning win.

The Dodgers blew the first game open late. They scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-1 lead, and Bill Singer made that lead hold up. Phil Regan relieved Bill Hands for the eighth and was battered for four runs for the final margin. Bill Sudakis had three RBIs for the Dodgers, including a two-run homer.

Regan was victimized for four runs again in Game Two. He was entrusted with a 4-1 lead and got only one out in the ninth inning as the Dodgers came back. Willie Crawford followed a walk by Ted Sizemore and a single by Andy Kosco with a three-run homer, then Sudakis doubled and later scored on Jeff Torborg's base hit. Fergie Jenkins had allowed just one unearned run in eight innings for the Cubs,

The series moved to hitter-friendly Wrigley, and the Cubs never trailed in Game Three. Ken Holtzman allowed four hits and two runs in eight innings, while Billy Williams had three hits and a two-run homer.

Singer and Hands dueled again in Game Four, with both right-handers going the distance. The Cubs got three solo homers, two from Williams and one from Ernie Banks. Hands scattered 10 hits, while Singer allowed just five hits, all by Williams and Banks.

The Cubs took the lead in the series with a crushing seven-run outburst in the third inning. Don Sutton walked three men in a row, two with the bases loaded, at one point in the inning, after which Randy Hundley drove in two runs with a base hit and Oscar Gamble homered. Jenkins later hit his second homer of the tournament. The Dodgers made the score deceptively close with four runs in the eighth and ninth innings off Rich Nye.

Back in Los Angeles for Game Six, the Dodgers quickly fell behind. Don Kessinger singled, stole second and scored on Williams' single. One out later, Banks doubled and Jim Hickman singled home Williams and Banks. The Dodgers scored one in the bottom of the inning and tied it in the third, with Manny Mota picking up all three RBIs with a pair of base hits. Wes Parker, who had missed the first four games with an injury, hit a two-run homer in the fifth to put the Dodgers ahead, and pinch-hitter Willie Crawford added another two-run shot in the eighth.

Game Seven went 11 innings and was every bit as taut as the 2-1 final would suggest. The Cubs scored in the fourth on singles by Glenn Beckert and Williams, followed by an error by Bill Singer. The Dodgers evened the score in the sixth; Maury Wills singled, stole second and scored on a Willie Daves base hit. Dodgers reliever Pete Mikkelsen walked four men and allowed a base hit in the seventh and eighth innings but stranded all five baserunners. The Dodgers finally broke through in the 10th on consecutive base hits by Parker, Tom Haller and Sudakis.

Player of the series: Bill Sudakis had a knack in the late innings for the Dodgers. He blew Game One open with an eighth-inning homer; he scored the winning run in Game Two's ninth inning comeback; and he singled home the game winner in the 11th of the finale. He went 9-for-23 for the series with three runs and four RBIs and even caught two innings when both Haller and Torborg were injured in Game Three.

Player availability: No injuries carry over. Mikkelsen pitched three innings in Game Seven and Brewer three in Games Six and Seven combined; try to limit them to one inning apiece in Game One.

This series began with an extra inning game. It ended with an extra inning game. In between, it featured plenty of power.

Game One, in Wrigley Field, was a pitchers duel for seven innings, with Bill Hands and the Cubs holding a 2-1 lead over Cole Hamels and the Phillies. In the top of the eighth, Hands retired the first two men, only to allow four straight singles followed by a homer by Raul Ibanez. But Brett Myers, handed the 6-2 lead in the ninth inning, opened the frame by walking Billy Williams. Ron Santo singled and Ernie Banks homered to make the score 6-5. Two outs later, pinch-hitter Jim Qualls singled home Randy Hundley for the tie.

Ryan Howard greeted Phil Regan in the top of the 10th with his first homer of the tournament, and Ryan Madson, who had finished the ninth, made that lead stand up in the bottom of the inning.

The Cubs never trailed Game Two behind Dick Selma and Hank Aguirre, Randy Hundley hit a two-run homer in the second inning, Howard evened the score at 3 with a two-run shot in the seventh,and Hundley responded in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer. Aguirre threw two perfect innings for the save.

The series shifted to Citzens Bank Ballpark for Game Three, and runs were plentiful. The Phillies scored one in the first inning and two more in the second off Fergie Jenkins. Banks clubbed a two-run homer as the Cubs tied it in the fourth. Jenkins hit a homer of his own in the seventh as the Cubs took a 5-3 lead, but the Phillies scored four unearned runs in the eighth (errors by Glenn Beckert and Don Kessinger) and hung on for the win.

Game Four was Randy Hundley Power Day. The Cubs catcher hit three homers: a solo homer in the second for a 1-0 lead; a solo homer in the sixth that made it 5-2; and a grand slam later in the sixth to cap a nine-run inning off Cliff Lee and Chad Durbin, Ken Holtzman gave up four runs on three homers in six innings, and Rich Nye finished with three scoreless frames for the long save. Every Cubs starter scored at least one run.

The Cubs went on to take Game Five behind a strong start from Hands: Seven innings of three-hit ball. He was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the top of the eighth as the Cubs broke a 1-1 tie against Chan Ho Park, who had bailed starter Cole Hamels out of the seventh.

Back in Wrigley, the Phillies extended the series by pummeling Jenkins for five runs in five innings, highlighted by a three-run homer by Jayson Werth. Werth had four RBIs for the game. Joe Blanton allowed just two runs in seven innings.

Game Seven lived up to the drama inherent in a Game Seven. Ibanez singled home Chase Utley in the third for a 1-0 lead against Holtzman, pitching on short rest. Beckert hit an unlikely two-run homer in the bottom of the inning for the lead. Banks hit another two-run homer in the fourth, and Ron Santo another in the fifth, all off Jamie Moyer, and the Cubs had a 6-1 lead after six innings.

The Phillies rallied for three in the seventh to chase Holtzman, with RBI doubles from Ben Francisco (subbing for the injured Werth) and Ibanez. The Phillies picked up a run in the eighth off Aguirre to make it 6-5 Cubs, and tied it in the ninth. Howard led off with a triple off Aguirre. Regan entered to fan Franscisco and get Ibanez on a grounder on which Howard could not advance. But with two outs, Carlos Ruiz doubled Howard home.

Regan and Madson held the game there into the bottom of the tenth, when Brad Lidge entered for the Phillies. He got pinch-hitter Qualls and Kessinger to start the inning, but then walked Beckert. Williams doubled, and Beckert beat Shane Victorino's throw to the plate with the run that won the series.

Player of the series: Randy Hundley and Ernie Banks each hit five homers. But Hundley was 14-for-22 with eight runs scored and nine RBIs, and the honor goes to him.

Four Hall of Famers were too many for the 2009 Cubs to handle. Billy Williams, Ron Santo and Ernie Banks combined to go 31-for-80 (.388) with 21 runs and 19 RBIs in the middle of the 1969 Cubs lineup, and Ferguson Jenkins tossed a pair of complete games.

Jenkins wasn't sharp in the opener, however. The 09 Cubs batted around in the second inning and got the Canadian out of the game after six innings, Dick Selma gave up a grand slam to Derrick Lee in the eighth to open the final margin.

Game Two was more of the crooked number same for the 09 Cubs. Alfonzo Soriano reached Bill Hands for a three-run homer in the first inning, and the 69 Cubs never caught up despite Ron Santo's answering two-run homer in the bottom of the inning and a three-run homer from Don Kessinger in the eighth.

The series moved to the 2009 version of Wrigley Field for Game Three, and the 69 Cubs picked up their first W with a five-run first inning. Randy Hundley hit a three-run homer off Carlos Zambrano. The 09 Cubs tied it in the fourth, batting around against Ken Holtzman, but the 69 Cubs broke the tie in the sixth (sac fly from pinch-hitter Willie Smth) and were never caught again.

Jenkins went on short rest in Game Four and went the distance, allowing just five hits (one a two-run homer by Milton Bradley). Santo hit a pair of homers, and Jim Hickman hit a three-run shot in the sixth.

Game Five had plenty of drama, Hands and Dempster dueled to a 1-1 tie through seven innings. After Dempster left for a pinch-hitter in an futile effort to break through in the bottom of the seventh, the 69 Cubs scored twice off Aaron Heilman and took a 3-1 lead into the ninth. Relief ace Phil Regan entered and didn't retire a man. Alfonso Soriano singled, Ryan Theriot singled, and Mike Fontenot homered for the walk-off win and a 3-2 series lead.

Game Six, played in the 1969 version of Wrigley, was higher scoring and nearly as dramatic. The 69 Cubs staked Holtzman to a 5-0 lead after four innings, with Banks contributing a three-run homer, but the 09 Cubs got a two-run shot from Reed Johnson in the fifth and picked up another run in the sixth to narrow the margin to 5-3. The 09 Cubs got two on with two out in the seventh, and Ted Abernathy relieved Holtzman. The left-handed hitting Fontenot pinch-hit -- and clubbed his second three-run homer in as many at-bats. But that was the high-water mark for the 09 Cubs. The 69 Cubs got two runs in the bottom of the eighth, and Regan closed it out to even the series.

Game Seven was a rout. Bradley opened the scoring with a first-inning homer off Jenkins, but the 69 Cubs tied it in the fourth and batted around in the fifth, getting homers from Don Young and Santo, then batted around again in the eighth, with Jenkins himself contributing a two-run single in the process. On the mound, Jenkins allowed just six hits and no runs after the Bradley homer.

Player of the series: Ron Santo was 15-for-26 with five homers and three doubles. He drove in 10 runs and scored 10.

Player availability: Glenn Beckert must miss the first game of the second round with an injury. Holtzman is eligible to pitch Game Two but with double penalty. Jenkins cannot pitch until Game Three.
