Browerville scored eight runs in the eighth and ninth innings to overtake the Agnews and edge closer to clinching the pennant. Jesse Burkett, Ed Delahanty, Sam Thompson and Jimmy Collins each had a pair of RBIs. Old Hoss Radbourn yielded five runs on 10 hits in his complete game win. .

Crimsons 6, Apollos 5 (10 innings)
King Kelly bopped a solo homer in the eighth to even the score at five, and Monte Ward dropped a single in front of Cleon Jones to plate Roger Connor with the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th. Willie Davis and Rico Petrocelli each homered and drove in two runs for the Apollos, who turned a triple play in the fifth inning. Cy Young went the distance for the win.

Bertha scored in eight of their nine at-bats, peppering four Hewitt hurlers for 20 hits, eight for extra bases. Dick Redding went the distance, allowing three runs in the first two innings but then holding the Apollos scoreless until Jim Wynn homered in the eighth, The Fishermen turned four double plays behind Redding.

Novelists 3, Agnews 1

Jesse Burkett punched a two-run single through a drawn-in infield to plate two runs in the third inning, and Mickey Welch allowed one run on three hits for his eighth victory as Browervllle drew closer to the pennant. The Novelists stole four bases off Nolan Ryan, but were caught stealing twice. Ryan allowed just six hits and three walks but was still saddled with his eighth loss in his final start of the season.

Long Prairie never caught up. Sam Thompson and Jimmy Collins each drove in two runs for the Novelists, and Tim Keefe struck out 10 Agnews in his nine-hit complete game.

Bertha's sloppy fielding -- including three errors in a seven-run Clarissa fourth inning -- booted this game to the Crimsons. Eight of Clarissa's runs were unearned. Pud Galvin staggered through 7.2 innings for the win, with Candy Cummings mopping up. Buck Ewing and George Davis each had three RBIs for the winners.

Jim Wynn hammered two of Hewitt's five homers and drove in four runs. Willie McCovey hit his 15th homer, and Rod Carew his first. The Apollos drove Tom Seaver from the hill after four innings and seven runs. Winning pitcher Fergie Jenkins allowed six runs in seven innings.

Monte Ward hit his first homer of the season in the second inning, and Kid Nicols allowed two runs on nine hits to keep the Crimsons' pennant ambitions alive. Clarissa scored its four runs in the first three innings and then hung on. Jimmy Collins had a pair of doubles and a single in four at-bats for the first place Novelists.

Hughie Jennings drove in three runs with a triple and a double, and Jim O'Rourke drove in the other two as Browerville tightened its grip on first place. Old Hoss Radbourn allowed one earned run in his six hitter. Clarissa left a man in scoring position in each of the first four innings.

Agnews 8, Fishermen 7 (10 innings)
Mike Caldwell worked three scoreless innings of relief and Cesar Cedeno -- who homered in the first inning -- singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.  One key to the game was a pair of errors by the Fishermen in the third inning, when the Agnews scored three times. The Fishermen scored six runs in the fifth to knock Gaylord Perry out of the game, after which John Hiller and Caldwell shut them down.

Reggie Jackson hammered a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth to reverse a one-run deficit, and John Hiller got the final five outs in relief of Bert Blyleven. Joe Morgan and Bobby Bonds each hit solo homers off loser Kid Nichols. Blyleven yielded 12 hits in 7.1 innings, including five for extra bases, but limited the damage to three runs. .

Novelists 17, Apollos 1
Orator O'Rourke's big stick spoke loudly in the first inning; the Browerville catcher capped a six-run inning with a grand slam off Sam McDowell. The Novelists continued to hit all game; they went scoreless in only two of their eight at-bats, and had a second six-run ining highlighted by a bases-loaded triple by Billy Hamilton. Browerville had 17 hits off six Hewitt hurlers.
.Tim Keefe granted one run on five hits for the win.

Willie McCovey hammered two of Hewitt's six homers as the Apollos outslugged the Long Prairie Agnews. Five of the six long balls were solo shots, all coming off losing pitcher Nolan Ryan. Willie Stargell hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth off Dick Bosman to make the score close. .

Novelists 3, Fishermen 2 (10 innings)
Ed Delahanty scored the game's first run in the second inning, drove in another with a sac fly in the third, preserved a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth by throwing out Home Run Johnson at the plate, then doubled home the eventual winning run in the 10th. Mickey Welch allowed nine hits in nine innings for the win, with John Clarkson working a perfect 10th for the save.

Long Prairie didn't get a hit until Larry Bowa singled with one out in the sixth inning, but Bobby Bond followed with a home run and that was enough to down the Crimsons. Losing pitcher Kid Nichols allowed just four hits. Clarissa had three runners gunned down at the plate trying to score on ground balls, two by third baseman Darrell Evans and one by second baseman Joe Morgan..Mike Marshall pitched a perfect ninth in relief of Bert Blyleven, who allowed a homer, two leadoff triples and and a leadoff double but only the one run in eight innings.

Fishermen 10, Apollos 8
The Taylor brothers, Ben and Candy Jim, each drove in two runs with extra-base hits to power Bertha to the win. The Fishermen hit six doubles and a triple among their 12 hits. Dick Redding worked into the eighth for the win, with Dizzy Dismukes and Rube Foster each getting three outs in relief. For the Apollos, Willie McCovey drove in four runs, Rod Carew hit two doubles and a triple, and Henry Aaron scored on each of his three singles. .

Hewitt mashed four homers off three Browerville pitchers to rout the Novelists. Fergie Jenkins went eight-plus innings for the win despite 10 hits and three walks, The Apollos scored six runs in the second to saddle Old Hoss Radbourne with the loss; Jim Wynn had a two-run homer in that frame. Robert Clemente hit a three-run homer in the sixth off Tim Keefe, and Sal Bando and Willie McCovey each homered off Al Spalding.

Fishermen 7, Agnews 3
Bertha's regular designated hitter, Candy Jim Taylor, has spent most the season below the Mendoza line, but in this game he homered for the Fishermen's first run and singled home the go-ahead run in top of the ninth. He finshed 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. John Donaldson went the distance, allowing seven hits, for the win. Cristobal Torriente drove in three runs for the winners.
