Paul bracket: 2009 San Diego Padres defeat 1969 St. Louis Cardinals in seven games

Four games into the series, the Cardinals not only held a 3-1 lead but had used just four pitchers and 10 positiom players. Three games later, it was the Padres movung on to the second round, even though St. Louis scored six more runs in total.

Game One: Cardinals 4, Padres 1: Mike Shannon hammered a two-run homer and Bob Gibsom fanned 10 in his five-hitter. Joe Torre scored a pair of runs for the Cardinals.

Game Two: Cardinals 3, Padres 0: Steve Carlton made it two straight complete game wns for the Cardinals, shutting out San Diego despite allowing seven hits and five walks, The Cards plated all three runs in the first inning, with Lou Brock opening the game with a triple and Vada Pinson following a Jake Peavy error with a double.

Game Three: Padres 3, Cardinals 2: Adrian Gonzalez and Max Venable had RBI doubles in the first inning and the Padres kept the lead for the duration. The Padres used five pitchers to secure the win, with Joe Thatcher getting credit for the W.

Game Four: Cardinals 8, Padres 1: Gibson again went the distance, throwing a seven-hitter with five walks. Brock had a base-leaded triple and Torre a two-run homer in the Cards' six-run third inning. 

Game Five: Padres 2, Cardinals 1: Keven Correia outdueled Carlton in what proved the turning point of the series. Torre opened the scoring in the top of the seventh with a homer off Correia, but Henry Blanco doubled in Kevin Kouzmanoff in the bottom of the frame to tie it. (Curt Flood cut down Scott Hairton at the plate to end the inning on the same play.) The Padres took the lead in the eighth as Will Venable singled in Everth Cabrera with two outs, and Heath Bell worked a perfect ninth to secure the win.

Game Six: Padres 7, Cardinals 5: St. Louis plated four runs in the first off Chris Young, but the Padres responded with five in the second to drive Mike Torrez from the hill. Venable and Tony Gwinn Jr eadh homered. Young followed his messy first inning with four scoreless frames and wound up with the series-evening win. 

Game Seven: Padres 6, St. Louis 3: Gibson, so dominant in his first two starts, yielded four runs on 10 hits in seven innings. Gonzalez and Venable each homered, and Nick Hundley had an RBI triple. Chad Gaudin went six-plus innings and had a four-run lead before allowing a baserunner. Thatcher, Luke Gregorson and Bell each got three outs to close out the game and the series.

Projected rotation: The Padres will replace four of the five men who started in the first round and go Correia-Greer-Stauffer-Latos-(Correia)-(LeBlanc)-(Greer). No bullpen restrictions for the Padres.

George bracket: 2017 Baltimore Orioles defeat 1973 San Diego Padres in seven games

Two deeply flawed teams played a competitive series that featured only one game that ended with a narrow margin.

Game One: Padres 9, Orioles 3: Bill Greif allowed two runs in 7.1 innings for the win. The Padres.scored six runs in the second to knock Kevin Gausman from the game, with Dave Winfield and Nate Colbert hitting back-to-back homers amd Johnny Grubb driving in a pair with a base hit.

Game Two: Orioles 10, Padres 2: Manny Machado homered in his first three at-bats as the Birds scored three runs in each of the first three innings. Wade Miley went seven innings for the win, allowing just one run.

Game Three: Orioles 11, Padres 3: Seth Smith scored four runs, reaching on one single and three bases on balls. Welington Castillo drove in four runs with his three hits, which included a homer and a double. Dylan Bundy threw five no-hit innings but allowed hits to each of the three men he faced in the sixth, after which four relievers got three outs apiece.

Game Four: Padres 7, Orioles 3: Baltmore scored four runs in the first off Randy Jones, but the lefty then stablized for 6.1 scoreless innings. Gurbb's three-run homer in the sixth put San Diego ahead to stay, and Vicente Romo got five outs for the save.

Game Five: Padres 8, Orioles 1: Greif allowed one run on eight hits in his complete game win while the Padres again roughed up Gausman (seven runs in four innings). Dave Roberts homered and drove in three runs and Grubb had a pair of RBIs. 

Game Six: Orioles 7, Padres 4 (10 innings): San Diego took the lead in a potential series clincher Winfield homered to lead off the top of the 10th, but Romo could not hold the lead. Castillo singled i Trey Mancini with two outs to tie the score in the bottom of the frame, and Chris Davis followed with a three-run homer to force a Game Seven. Mychal Givens, who allowed the one run in three innings of relief, was credited with the win.

Game Seven: Orioles 9, Padres 5: Machado went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer adn scored three times. Jonathan Schoop homered in the seventh to put the Birds ahead to stay. Zach Britton, the first of three relievers after Bundy allowed three runs in six innings, got the win. 

Projected rotation: Gausman-Jimenez-Bundy-Miley-(Gausman)-(Jimenez)-(Bundy). Givens should not pitch in the first game of the second round.

Ringo bracket: 1969 Oakland Athletics defeat the 1973 San Francisco Giants in five games

Call it a reversal of form. The '69 A's were swept in Tournment One; the '73 Giants were the champions of Tournament Three. But in this one, Tournament Four, the A's dismissed the Giants rather swiftly.

Game One: A's 3, Giants 2: Reggie Jackson and Sal Bando hit back-to-back homers in the first inning, and Tommie Reynolds scored in the second after a lead-off triple. After that Ron Byrant and two relievers shut down the A's, but that was enough for Catfish Hunter, who allowed two unearned runs in 6.2 innings, with Jim Roland getting the final out of the seventh and Rollie Fingers threw two innings for the save.

Game Two: A's 8, Giants 4: The A's got homers from Jackson and Danny Cater and Blue Moon Odom alled six hits and four runs in eight innings for the win. The Giants led 4-3 after six, but Oakland scored two in the seventh, one in the eighth and two more in the ninth to pull away.

Game Three: A's 9, Giants 2: Oakland didn't score until the fifth, but then started roughing up four San Francisco hurlers, scoring in each of their final four hitting innings. Chuck Dobson gave way to a pinch hitter in the fifth (Bob Johnson tripled in two runs) but got credit for the win.

Game Four: Giants 5, A's 1: Juan Marichal scattered eight hits in seven innings but held the A's to a single run. Lew Krausse, hurt to a degree by the fielding. allowed all five runs, three earned in 4-plus innings. 

Game Five: A's 5, Giants 0: Hunter gave up just three hits in eight innings as the Athletics wrapped up the series. Oakland got two unearned runs in the first off Bryant, then were shut down until the ninth when they turned four walks, a double and a single into three runs.  Cater drove in two with the double. The other scored on a wild pitch by Elias Sosa, who didn't retire any of the three men he faced.

Projected rotation: Hunter-Odom-C Dobson-Nash(?)-(Hunter)-(Odom)-(Dobson). Krausse, Pizzaro and Talbot are also options for the fourth game. The bullpen will be fully available for the start of the second round.
