The Reds went to their bullpen just three times in the six games, and Carl Mays didn't allow an earned run in his two complete-game wins.
The series opened in Cincinnati's Redland Field, and the Reds got going with a three-run first. They held a 6-3 lead going into the seventh, but at that point the A's erupted for seven runs off Eppa Rixey and Paul Donohue, starting with a leadoff triple by Mark Canha and including RBI doubles from Jed Lowrie and Ryon Healy. Five Oakland reliever each threw a scoreless inning, with just one hit allowed in those frames.
The Reds evened the series behind Mays in Game Two. He allowed just six hits through the first eight innings. Oakland got two unearned runs in the ninth. Hughie Critz scored twice for the Reds.
The series moved to Oakland, and the Reds never trailed in Game Three. Ike Caveney got the first homer of the series in the fifth inning off Kendall Gravemanm and Matt Joyce responded with a solo shot off Dolph Luque. Luque allowed just four hits in his complete game.
The A's evened the series again in Game 4 despite allowing five runs in the first inning. A string of Oakland relievers held the Reds scoreless the rest of the way, and Matt Chapman's two-run double in the eighth put the A's ahead and drove Donohue out of the game.
Rixey went the distance in Game Five for the Reds, allowing two earned runs (and two unearned) on nine hits. Critz scored three runs for Cincinnati, and Edd Roush hit a pair of doubles and drove in two runs.
The series returned to Redland Field for Game Six, and Mays was brilliant, allowing just one baserunner (on a walk) in the first five innings. He finished with a two-hit shutout, and needed to be that good, as the Reds didn't break through against Jharel Cotton until the eighth inning. With two outs, Jake Daubert singled and Roush brought him home with a double.

Cleveland dropped the first two games but bounced back for four straight wins,.
Mudcat Grant appeared in firm control of the opener in Anaheim's Angel Stadium, allowing just one hit (a Mike Trout homer) in the first eight innings. Don Dillard's homer in the eighth off reliever Fernando Salas gave Cleveland a 4-1 lead. But in the ninth Trout walked, Justin Upton singled and with two outs Albert Pujols tied it with a three-run shot off Grant. Upton hit a two-run homer with two outs in the 11th off Dick Stigman for the walkoff.
Jesse Chavez dominated for seven innings in Game Two. He held to Tribe to five hits and no runs while fanning seven. The Angels got three runs off Gary Bell, two on sac flies, and held on despite a two-run homer in the ninth by Willie Kirkland.
The series shifted to Cleveland's Memorial Stadium for Game Three, and the series tilted in Cleveland's favor. Jim Perry allowed three runs in eight innings, while Mike De la Hoz, subbing for the injured Bubba Phillips, hit a three-run homer and John Romano drove in another three with a homer and double. Romano also scored three runs.
Barry Latman took a shutout into the eighth inning for the Game Four victory. He allowed one run on four hits. Tito Francona broke the game open with a grand slam off Yusmeiro Petit.
Romero went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in Game Five, while Grant went eight innings despite allowing homers to Trout and Kaleb Cowart. Phillips and Vic Power each had a pair of RBIs.
The series went back to Anaheim, but the Tribe won on the road this time. Bell was pulled with one out in the fifth, trailing 4-2, but the Indians scored the next five runs, including a two-run homer by Phillips, his third straight game with a homer. Bobby Locke, John Antonelli and Wynn Hawkins combined to blank the Angels into the ninth. Anaheim rallied for a run off Hawkins in the ninth, but Frank Funk fanned Upton with the tying run on base for the series-clinching save.

The Giants used just six pitchers, one of them for a single inning, for the sweep, and Felipe Alou drove in at least one run in each game.
Alou and Willie McCovey each hit two-run homers in the opener at Candlestick Park to back Jack Sanford, who allowed just four hits in 8.1 innings. Stu Miller relieved with two men on in the ninth and retired both men he faced.
Mike McCormick and Dylan Bundy dueled in the second game, which was scoreless into the bottom of the eighth, when the Giants broke through for three runs. Alou doubled (his second two-bagger fo the game) with the bases loaded to set up another save opportunity for Miller.
The series shifted to Baltimore's Camden Yards, and Game Three lasted a long while. Manny Machado homered and doubled to give the Orioles a 3-2 lead after six innings. Jim Davenport doubled in two runs in the top of the ninth to give the Giants the lead, but Trey Mancini led off the bottom of the inning with a game-tying homer off Miller. The changeup artist didn't allow another hit in a four-inning stint, and got the win when Alou singled home Willie Mays in the 12th.
Machado led off Game Four for the home team with a fly ball that Harvey Kuenn played into a double, and he later scored on an error. It turned out to be the only hit Sad Sam Jones allowed; Jones walked two and struck out seven. Mays homered in the fourth to even the score, and the Giants got RBI singles from Kuenn, Orlando Cepeda and Alou to give Jones all the support he needed.
