There were injuries and unearned runs aplenty in this St. Louis series, with all games played in the same park, albeit under different names.

The Browns won the opener in 1961's Busch Stadium. The Cardinals scored two runs in the first, but the Browns replied with three runs in the top of the second, with two of them scoring on Julian Javier's two-base error. The Cards responded with three runs on their own, all unearned. The Browns replied with another three-spot in the top of the third, with two of them again unearned. The sloppiness abated after that. Urban Shocker allowed four earned runs in seven innings for the win. Browns stars Marty McManus and Ken Williams were both injured in this game, McManus for the duration of the series.

Ken Boyer's two-run homer in the bottom of the 11th in Game Two evened the series. Bob Gibson carried a 3-2 lead into the ninth but couldn't hold the lead; George Sisler walked to lead off the inning and went to third on a single by Baby Doll Jacobson. Herschel Bennett brought Sisler in with a ground ball. Lindy McDaniel held the Browns hitless in the 10th and 11th to give Boyer his opportunity.

The series shifted to 1924, when the park was called Sportsman's Park. The Cardinals roughed up Ernie Wingard for a run in the first, three in the second and another in the third and were never challenged. Alex Grammas drove in three runs for the Cards. Larry Jackson went seven innings for the win, allowing one earned run. Stan Musial was injured in the game for the Cardinals and did not again appear in the series.

Shocker took the hill on short rest in Game Four for the Browns, and the home team was trailing when he departed. But Syl Simon, playing because of McManus' injury, tripled home two runs off McDaniel in the eighth to cut the deficit to 5-4. In the ninth, the Cardinals brought in Mickey McDermott to face a string of left-handed hitters; he retired none of them. Harry Rice, pinch-hitting, walked; Jack Tobin singled; and Sisler homered to end the game. Hub Pruett picked up the W.

Game Five went to the Cardinals. Carl Warwick, filling in for Musial in left against the right-handed Dixie Davis, went 3-for-4 with a walk, and scored four times. Bill White homered and drove in four runs. Ken Williams returned from his injury to hit a two-run homer off Sadecki and set up McDaniel's save.

The series reverted to Busch Stadium for Game Six, and Bob Gibson never let the Browns in the game. Sisler singled in the first and Wally Gerber walked in the the fifth; those were the only baserunners Gibson allowed inthe first eight innings. Meanwhile, the Cards scored two runs in the third off Dave Danforth and another in the fourth on White's third homer of the series. The Cards broke it open in the sixth with four runs off Ray Kolp. Gibson left after allowing consecutive doubles to open the ninth, and Ernie Brogilo retired all three men he faced to end the game and the series.

Player availablity: Musial is available for the second round, and the Cardinal bullpen will be at full strength for Game One.

The Browns won every game in which the Yankees failed to hit a homer. Unfortunately for St. Louis, that only happened three times in the series.

Game One turned into a Yankee rout late. Elston Howard homered in the fourth to give the home team a 2-0 lead and drove in another run in the sixth. After the Browns broke through in the top of the seventh to make it 3-1, however, the Browns bullpen surrendered two more two-run homers, to Roger Maris and Bill Skowron.

The Browns evened the series with a three-run outburst in the eighth against Rollie Sheldon and Luis Arroyo, Hack Severeid had a crucial triple in the middle of the inning. Urban Shocker made a one-batter appearance in the ninth with two on and two out to get the save. Winner Ernie Wingard allowed three earned runs in seven innings on five hits and five walks.

The series shifted to 1924 and Sportsman's Park in St. Louis for Game Three. Ken Williams drove in four runs on a triple and homer, and each of the first four hitters in the Browns lineup scored at least twice. Dixie Davis allowed three hits in 6.1 innings for the win.

The bats were silent in Game Four. Shocker pitched all 11 innings for the Browns and was victimized by Tony Kubek's two-out homer in the final frame. Bud Daley threw seven scoreless innings for the Yankees, followed by three more by Jim Coates, who got credit for the win. Shocker allowed six hits and one walk.

The Browns left home with the series lead after piecing together a stout game from bullpen parts. Bill Baynes (four innings), George Grant (one), Hub Pruett (2), George Lyons (0.1) and Danforth (1.6) combined for a seven hitter. The Browns scored three runs in the seventh off Whitey Ford and Sheldon, with Jack Tobin driving in a pair.

Back in 1961's Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Bombers took control in Game Six. The Browns scored a pair of unearned runs in the second after a Skowron error to take an early lead, but that was not only the last lead the Browns would hold in the series, it was the last runs they would tally. The Yankees got a pair of homers from Maris, plus longballs from Skowron and Johnny Blanchard, and won 9-2.

Game Seven was over early. Yogi Berra hit a three-run homer off Davis in the first inning; Maris hit a three-run homer off Elam Vangilder in the second. Bill Stafford went the distance for the win, allowing just two singles and one walk.

This battle of St. Louis swung from pitchers duels to slugfests.

Urban Shocker scattered six hits while going the distance in the opener at Busch Stadium III. Wally Gerber double in two runs in the second inning to stake Shocker to the lead, and Marty McManus scored a pair of runs for the Browns.

The Browns also took Game 2, but it took 15 innings. McManus scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 15th on a two-out error by Kolten Wong, and Elam Vangilder stranded the tying run at third in the bottom of the inning. Lance Lynn threw seven scoreless innings for a no-decision, allowing just four hits.

The series shifted to 1924's Sportsman's Park, and the Cardinals drove Ernie Wingard from Game Three in the first inning. Randall Grichuk's three-run homer capped a five-run outburst. The Browns whittled away at the lead, but their bullpen surrendered seven runs in the final four innings, including a three-run homer by Paul DeJong in the ninth.

Shocker returned for Game Four and was masterful. The only hit the Cardinals got off the spitballer was a second-inning single by Stephen Piscotty. Shocker walked two and struck out eight, and also tripled and scored the first run of the game.

The Browns blasted Cardinals ace Carlos Martinez from the mound in the first inning in Game Five; Martinez didn't record an out as the Browns peppered him for six runs on a walk, two singles and three doubles. But the Cardinals avoided elimination with seven runs in the final three innings, tagging Wingard, who worked the ninth, with the 10-9 loss.

The series reverted to 2017 and Busch III, and Lynn dueled Dixie Davis. Each threw eight scoreless innings before leaving for pinch hitters. Jose Martinez plated the only run of the game in the bottom of the ninth with a single that bought in Grichuk.

Game Seven rematched Game One's starters: Shocker, working for the second time on short rest, against Martinez, getting the ball on two days rest after failing to record an out in Game Five. Martinez again failed to retire a hitter, although this time there was an error involved. George Sisler homered off Martinez, and Jack Tobin capped the eight-run first with a three-run homer off Matt Bowman. The Cards plated four unearned runs in the second, but Shocker recovered to toss seven innings, allowing just one earned run, before turning the final two innings over to Vangilder, who allowed an unearned run but nailed down the game and the series.
