The 1924 Pirates won three games in Yankee Stadium to oust the favored 1961 Yankees.

Game One was the only home win for the Yankees. Mickey Mantle hit a three-run homer in the first inning, his first circuit clout of the tournament, to give the Yankess a lead they would not relinquish. Whitey Ford allowed two earned runs in seven innings for the win

The Pirates evened the series in Game Two despite a six-run sixth inning from the Yankees, Pittsburgh hit five triples and six doubles. Babe Adams threw three perfect innings in relief and was credited with the win.

The series moved to Pittsburgh's Forbes Field, circa 1924, for the next three games. Game Three was a marathon affair, with both Johnny Morrison and Luis Arroyo throwing six innings of relief. Arroyo entered in the bottom of the 10th with a man on second and no outs and wriggled out of the jam. The Yankees broke through in the 16th for an unearned run off Morrison, but but Kiki Cuyler tripled home the tying run off Jim Coates in the bottom of the inning and scored the winner on a single by Pie Traynor.

Game Four went 10 innings. Mantle's three-run homer in the fifth gave New York a 5-0 lead, but the Priates got a run in the eighth and four in the ninth off Tex Clevenger and Coates to tie it. Errors by Pittsburgh's middle infielders set up a pair of unearned runs in the 10th, and Coates held Pittsburgh off the board in the bottom of the inning.

New York won Game Five with a seven-run seventh. Pittsburgh had taken a 5-0 lead after four innings, with Wilbur Cooper driving in three runs with a single and double and Cuyler hitting a two-run homer off Ford. But Pittsburgh committed a pair of errors to ioen the top of the seventh, and Bob Cerv capped the rally with a three-run shot.  All eight Yankee runs were unearned, but they all counted.

The series returned to 1961's version of Yankee Stadium for Game Six. The hoem tem led 3-2 after seven innings, but Cuyler's lead-off homer tied it in the eighth, and later in the inning pinch-hitter Carson Bigbee tripled in two runs to cap a four-run rally. Glenn Wright hit a two-run homer in the ninth for the final margin.

Mantle hit another three-run first-inning homer in Game Seven, but the game and series turned on the fourth inning when left fielder Johnny Blanchard could not corral a ball hit by Charlie Grimm that went for a two-out RBI single. Rabbit Maranville followed with a two-run homer that put Pittsburgh up 4-3. The Pirates plated two more runs in the fifth with triples from Max Carey and Traynor. Ray Kremer went the distance for Pittsburgh, alloing just one earned run over the final eight innings.

The Browns won every game in which the Yankees failed to hit a homer. Unfortunately for St. Louis, that only happened three times in the series.

Game One turned into a Yankee rout late. Elston Howard homered in the fourth to give the home team a 2-0 lead and drove in another run in the sixth. After the Browns broke through in the top of the seventh to make it 3-1, however, the Browns bullpen surrendered two more two-run homers, to Roger Maris and Bill Skowron.

The Browns evened the series with a three-run outburst in the eighth against Rollie Sheldon and Luis Arroyo, Hack Severeid had a crucial triple in the middle of the inning. Urban Shocker made a one-batter appearance in the ninth with two on and two out to get the save. Winner Ernie Wingard allowed three earned runs in seven innings on five hits and five walks.

The series shifted to 1924 and Sportsman's Park in St. Louis for Game Three. Ken Williams drove in four runs on a triple and homer, and each of the first four hitters in the Browns lineup scored at least twice. Dixie Davis allowed three hits in 6.1 innings for the win.

The bats were silent in Game Four. Shocker pitched all 11 innings for the Browns and was victimized by Tony Kubek's two-out homer in the final frame. Bud Daley threw seven scoreless innings for the Yankees, followed by three more by Jim Coates, who got credit for the win. Shocker allowed six hits and one walk.

The Browns left home with the series lead after piecing together a stout game from bullpen parts. Bill Baynes (four innings), George Grant (one), Hub Pruett (2), George Lyons (0.1) and Danforth (1.6) combined for a seven hitter. The Browns scored three runs in the seventh off Whitey Ford and Sheldon, with Jack Tobin driving in a pair.

Back in 1961's Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Bombers took control in Game Six. The Browns scored a pair of unearned runs in the second after a Skowron error to take an early lead, but that was not only the last lead the Browns would hold in the series, it was the last runs they would tally. The Yankees got a pair of homers from Maris, plus longballs from Skowron and Johnny Blanchard, and won 9-2.

Game Seven was over early. Yogi Berra hit a three-run homer off Davis in the first inning; Maris hit a three-run homer off Elam Vangilder in the second. Bill Stafford went the distance for the win, allowing just two singles and one walk.

Roger Maris homered in each game as a Yankees got their expected series win, although with closer games than anticipated.

The bottom-seeded Phillies took the opener in Yankee Stadium, with light-hitting catcher Clay Dalrymple homering for their first run and singling in the go-ahead run in the 12th. Tony Kubek and Maris hit back-to-back homers in the first inning off Robin Roberts, and Maris hit another in the third. Chris Short allowed one run in four-plus innings of relief to give the Phillies the chance for the extra-inning win.

Ralph Terry evened the series with a two-hit shutout. He allowed just four baserunners -- a hit batter and an error -- and wiped one out with a double play grounder. Maris hit a two-run homer in the sixth for all the runs.

The series moved to Philadelphia and Connie Mack Stadium for Game Three. Maris homered in the first and drove in the final run with a ground out. Bill Stafford allowed one run in five innings for the win, with Rollie Sheldon, Hal Reniff and Luis Arroyo splitting the remaining four innings.

The Phillies led Game Four 5-3 after seven innings, but their bullpen couldn't hold the lead. The Yankees scored two in the top of the eighth and five more in the ninth, with Maris opening the inning with another homer. Kubek hit three doubles for the Yankees, driving in a pair in the ninth with his final two-bagger. Bobby Gene Smith and Bobby Del Greco hit back-to-back homers off Bud Daley in the fifth for the Phils.

Maris opened the scoring in Game Five with an RBI triple. He added a two-run homer in the fifth off Roberts. Whitey Ford allowed four runs in 6.1 innings but was credited with the win. Arroyo retired the final five batters to secure the game.
