It took seven games -- and extra innings in that finale -- but the heavily favored Dodgers held off the underdog White Sox.

The Dodgers battered Sloppy Thurston for six runs in the first inning of the opener at Chavez Ravine, with Logan Forsythe driving the White Sox workhorse from the hill with a three-run homer. But Clayton Kershaw couldn't hold that lead as the Sox scored eight times in the fifth, with Willie Kamm and Bill Barrett hitting back-to-back homers. The Chicago bullpen allowed three runs in 8.6 innings.

Los Angeles repeated the first-inning hit fest in Game Two, plating five tallies off Ted Lyons without benefit of an extra base hit. Alex Wood didn't repeat Kershaw's collapse, although he did surrender a pair of runs in the fourth and left the bases loaded. Wood went six innings, allowing five hits, for the win.

The series shifted to Comiskey Park and 1924 for Game Three, and Red Fazber continued his scintillating tournament. The spitballer went eight innings, allowing one run on three hits, and carried a no-hitter into the sixth. Earl Sheely had five RBIs for Chicago with a pair of doubles, and Harry Hooper scored three times. Johnny Mostil capped the scoring with a three-run homer.

The Dodgers again evened the series in Game Four with a late-inning comeback. Thurston carried a 3-2 lead into the eighth, but Cody Bellinger tripled in the tying run and scored the go-ahead run on a sac fly. The Dodgers beat up on a weary Thornton in the ninth and did even more damage when Leo Magnum relieved. Curtis Granderson hit a grand slam off  Magnum to cap the nine-run outburst.

Lyons got the ball for Game Five after his abbreviated start in Game 2 and threw a gem, scattering seven hits and holding the Dodgers scoreless. Sheely and Barrett each homered in the fourth off Kershaw to tag the Dodger ace with another loss.

The Dodger limped back home facing elimination, but Wood and Corey Seager came through in Game Six. Seager hit a three-run homer to cap a four-run fourth, and Wood again allowed just two runs in six frames.

That set up Game Seven. Thornton allowed a run in the first on a Seager triple and Bellinger single, and the Sox tied it in the third on Mostil's successful squeeze bunt. Barrett singled home the go-ahead run for the Sox in the sixth, and Thornton held that lead until Granderson doubled in Puig from first in the eighth. The Grandy Man came through one more time in the 10th. After Thornton got the first two hitters, Yasmani Grandal singled and Granderson followed with the series-clinching homer.

The White Sox didn't hit a homer in the six game series, but they allowed just one (unearned) run in three complete game wins en route to their second straight series upset.

The first game, in Baltimore's Memorial Stadium, went to the favored O's. Baltimore scored five runs in the third innings, topped by a three-run double by Ron Hansen on which Hansen scored on Bibb Falk's error. The White Sox never caught up.

Sloppy Thurston threw a seven-hit shutout in the second game to even the series. He walked one and struck out three. Falk went 4-for-4 for the Sox, while Earl Sheely scored twice and Willie Kamm drove in a pair.

The series moved to 1924 and Comiskey Park for Game 3, and Red Faber threw his third straight complete game shutout. The spitballer allowed four hits, waking none and striking our five. Falk drew a bases-loaded walk in the third inning to bring home Harry Hooper with the game's only tally.

Baltimore evened the series behind Hal Brown, who allowed one run in seven innings. The Sox made it close with two runs in the eighth off Hoyt Wilhelm and another in the ninth off Dick Hall. Brooks Robinson and Jerry Adair each drove in a pair of runs for Baltimore, and Jackie Brandt scored twice.

The Sox retook the series lead on a pair of big innings in Game 5, plating four runs in the third and three more in the fourth off Steve Barber. Hooper, Eddie Collins and Sheely each scored twice. The Orioles hit the only homers of the series off Thurston, who won despite allowing five runs in eight innings.

The series returned to 1961 Baltimore, and the Sox clinched the series in a sloppy Game 6 rout. A Brooks Robinson error set up three unearned runs in the first inning, and Chuck Estrada walked four and threw a wild pitch in the second. The Sox scored two more unearned runs in the fifth. Lyons went the distance, allowing an unearned run on six hits and four walks. Kamm drove in three runs as the Sox drew nine walks off four Baltimore pitchers.

Red Faber threw two complete game shutouts to lead Chicago to the upset.

The Twins battered Sloppy Thurston for five runs in the first inning of the opener, driving the Chicago workhorse from the mound after one frame, and tagged reliever Ted Lyons for three more runs in two innings. Eduardo Escobar and Max Kepler each had two-run doubles in the first inning, and Miguel Sano hit a two-run homer in the second.

Faber responded with a five-hit shutout in the second game. The spitballer walked two and struck out five. Willie Kamm hit a two-run homer in the second inning off Jose Berrios.

The series moved to Comiskey Park for Game Three, and Kyle Gibson and the Twins bullpen shut out the Pale Hose. Gibson scattered seven hits and four walks in 6.1 innings; Alan Busenitz, Taylor Rogers, Buddy Boshers and Phil Hughes combined for eight outs with one baserunner and two doubleplays. Kepler drove in three runs, and Jorge Polanco doubled twice for the Twins.

Chicago evened the series in Game Four, as Lyons went the distance, allowing nine hits. Twins starter Hector Santiago left with an injury after two scoreless innings, and the Twins bullpen couldn't dupliate its stellar Game 3 performance. Ray Schalk went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Earl Sheely also went 3-for-4 with two runs; Sheely hit a pair of doubles and drove in a run.

Charlie Robertson allowed three hits in eight innings of Game Five, while his teammates stun Ervin Santana for a pair of runs in the third inning. Robertson walked three and fanned eight. Sarge Connally worked a hitless ninth for the only save of the series.

Back in Target Field, the Twins spotted the White Sox three runs in the first inning but clawed back against Thornton. Sano's fifth inning homer tied the game at 5, and Kepler's blast in the sixth put the Twins ahead to stay. Tyler Duffey threw four scoreless innings of relief for the win.

Faber came through in the finale with an eight-hitter. He retired the final eight hitters and finshed with seven strikeouts and two walks. Gibson allowed just one run in 4.2 innings, Harry Hooper's second homer of the series, but that was one more run than Faber surrendered.
