Cleveland battered Detroit pitching for 12 homers and drew 21 walks in the five games.

The Tigers won the opener in Cleveland's Progressive Field by scoring three runs in the seventh and two more in the ninth. Dick Brown hit a three-run homer in the second inning off Corey Kluber, and Reno Bertoria a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh off reliever Joe Smith. Bradley Zimmer had two doubles and three RBIs for the Tribe.

Cleveland evened the series in Game Two as Carlos Carrasco allowed one run in 5.1 innings and Zimmer and Edwin Encarncion each drove in a pair of runs. Zimmer and Francisco Lindor each scored twice.

The series shifted to 1961 and Tiger Stadium, where Cleveland made itself at home in Game Three. Yan Gomes' two-run homer in the second gave the Indians a 3-0 lead, and Trevor Bauer allowed just three singles, aa walk and a hit batter in six scoreless innings. Cleveland added five runs in the seventh off three Detroit pitchers, with Jay Bruce and Zimmer each driving in two runs. The Tigers didnt score until a-four-run ninth.

Lonnie Chisenhall hit three homers in Game Four for Cleveland, with the third being the last of a back-to-back-to-back series following homers by Bruce and Encarncion. Mike Clevenger went six scoreless innings for the win, allowing three hits, two walks a a hit batter.

The Indians wrapped it up with another 7-1 rout in Game Five. Corey Kluber yielded a solo homer to Al Kaline in the first inning, but Lindor tied it with his own homer in the third, and the Indians erupted for four runs in the fourth to hand Frank Lary his first and only loss of the tournament. Zimmer and Carlos Santana hit solo homers off the Detroit bullpen. Kluber went six innings, allowing five hits and just the one run.

The Tigers held the Robins to nine runs in the four games.

Rocky Colavito got the Tigers off to a rousing start in the Tiger Stadium opener with a three-run homer off Burleigh Grimes. He doubled in another run in the third inning and hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Frank Lary allowed two runs on five hits in eight innings for the win.

Jim Bunning and Dazzy Vance lived up to their Hall of Fame resumes in Game Two. Dick Brown's fifth inning homer off Vance was the only tally of the game. Bunning, pitching on short rest, went seven innings, allowing three hits. Terry Fox worked the final two innings, allowing one single but getting a double play to face the minimum.

The series shifted to 1924 and Ebbets Field for Game Three. Detroit scored the first three runs in the fourth inning, with Mike Roarke doubling in two of them. Dick McAuliffe, who entered the game when Steve Boros was injured, drove in five runs on two homers and a single, and Norm Cash had four RBIs on a homer and double.

Brooklyn got its only lead of the series on Jack Fournier's three-run homer in the sixth inning of Game Four.But the Tigers got three of their own in the eighth, with RBIs by pinch-hitter Charlie Maxwell, Al Kaline and Cash. Detroit relievers Hank Aguirre, Gerry Staley and Fox faced just nine hitters over the final three innings, with Aguirre credited with the win.

This series was marked -- or marred -- by erratic fielding and ineffective bullpens.

Detorit won the opener behind six innings of two-run ball from starter Frank Lary. Pinch-hitter Bobo Osborne put the Tigers ahead with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth. Bill Bruton scored three times for Detroit and drove in three.

The Cubs scored the final 13 runs of the second game to overcome a huge deficit and their own fielding incompetence. Eight of Detroit's 10 runs were unearned as the Cubs were charged with six errors. Ray Grimes had a bases-loaded pinch-hit triple in the ninth and scored the tying run. Jigger Statz and Cliff Heathcote each scored three runs for the Cubs, and George Grantham, Gabby Hartnett and Grimes each scored twice. Bernie Friberg and Hartnett each had three RBIs. Rocky Colavito scored three runs for the Tigers and drove in a pair.

The series moved to 1924 and Wrigley Field for Game Three, and the runs and errors kept coming. Al Kaline, Norm Cash and Colavito hit consecutive homers in the top of the ninth to seeming put the game out of reach, but Grimes hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth off Phil Regan to pull with in one. All four runs for the Cubs in that inning were unearned, as was one other score. Colavito had four RBIs and three runs scored. Hartnett homered twice for Chicago; he and Hack Miller each scored three runs.

Tony Kaufmann and Paul Foytack calmed things down in Game Four. Foytack took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth, but with one out Statz homered and Heathcote singled. Hank Aguirre entered and allowed a double, a walk and, after an out, another double. That put the Cubs in front, and Kaufmann went the distance with a seven-hitter to even the series.

Lary threw a complete game of his own in Game Five, and the Tigers scored in seven of the nine innings. Two of the five runs Chicago starter Elmer Jacobs allowed in three innings were unearned. Lary allowed six hit and walked none, but one of the hits was a two-run homer by Statz. Bruton scored three runs fot the Tigers.

The series reverted to 1961 and Tiger Stadium for Game Six, which featured the Hall of Fame pitching matchup of Pete Alexander and Jim Bunning (as had Game Two). Alexander went 10 innings for the Cubs but allowed a game-tying homer in the ninth to Colavito. Hartnett homered and tripled twice. The Tigers won the game, and the series, on Steve Boros' RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th.

The Phillies outscored Detroit in the series, but the Tigers won the close games to survive and advance.

Frank Lary opened Game One, in Tiger Stadium, with six shutout innings. He was relieved in the seventh after allowing three straight two-out singles followed by a walk, but Hank Aguirre popped up a pinch hitter to end the threat. Rocky Colavito hit a two-run homer for the home team, Norm Cash a solo shot, and Dick McAuliffe tripled and scored for the Tigers' other tally.

The Phillies evened the series by pounding Jim Bunning for four runs on six hits in five innings, with Jimmy Wilson hitting a two-run double. George Harper and Wilson hit back-to-back homers in the eighth off Phil Regan as the Phillies made it a rout. Harper doubled, tripled and homered, and Hal Carlson allowed eight hits in his complete game win.

The series shifted to Baker Bowl, the tiny and decrepit yard of the Phillies, for Game Three. Reno Betoria was the unlikely hitting star, driving in the first four runs for the Tigers on a single, homer and sac fly. Bill Bruton also hit a two-run homer to support Don Mossi, who allowed one run in six innings for the win.

The Phillies romped in Game Four, with middle infielders Heine Sand and Hod Ford hitting back to back homers in the second off Paul Foytack, Joe Shultz driving Foytack from the game with a two-run shot in the four-run fifth and Cy Williams popping a grand slam off Regan to highlight a seven-run sixth. Regan faced six men and retired none of them.

Lary and Jimmy Ring dueled in Game 5, with the Phillies taking a 2-1 lead in the seventh on a squeeze bunt by Ford. But in the top of the eighth Dick Brown hit a two-out, three-run homer off Ring to put the Tigers ahead to stay.

The series returned to Detroit for another pitchers duel, this one between Bunning and Carlson. Bunning didn't allow a baserunner until the fifth; he went seven scoreless, scattering six hits, issuing one intentional walk (to Williams) and striking out seven. Backup catcher Mike Roarke singled home Colavito for the game's only run in the second. Carlson went eight innings for the visitors, allowing six hits and one walk.
