The 1973 San Francisco Giants emerged at the unlikely champions of Tournament Three. The final series was their third series that went the full seven games.

The homestanding Cardinals took control of Game One early, knocking Ron Bryant out after three innings and taking a 5-0 lead. Two of the runs off Bryant were unearned. Willie McCovey homered in the fourth off winner Jack Flaherty and tripled in a two-run ninth in which the Cardinals needed three pitchers to get three outs and secure with win.

The Cardinals held a 4-0 lead after six innings of Game Two, but the Giants scored three in the seventh off Andrew Miller and two more in the eighth off John Gant to take a 5-4 lead. With two out in the bottom of the ninth, Paul Goldschmidt walked and Marcel Ozuna doubled off Elias Sosa; Don McMahon relieved to strike out Harrison Bader, who had entered the game for defensive purposes when the Cardinals had that 4-0 lead.

The series moved to 1973 and Candlestick Park, and the Cards bombarded Tom Bradley and reliever Jim Willoughby for 11 runs in fourth through seventh innings.  Bader and Kolton Wong each hit three-run homers for St. Louis. Miles Mikolas went five innings for the win, and Michael Wacha threw four innings for the save.

The Giants returned the favor in Game Four, evening the series with an 11-3 win. Bryant went the distance despite a two-run homer by Goldschmidt. San Francisco got four extra-base hits off Adam Wainwright in one-plus innings --  doubles by Chris Speier and Ed Goodson, a triple from Garry Maddox and a homer by McCovey.

Jim Barr gave up one run in seven innings in Game Five, with McMahon and Randy Moffitt each tossing a hitless frame. Maddox threw out Goldschmidt at the plate to end the fourth inning, then led off the bottom of the inning with a hit and scored the first run of the game. Maddox hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and Barr and the relievers took it from there.

Back in St. Louis, the Giants shifted plans and gave the start to Juan Marichal, giving the Hall of Famer a chance to wrap up the series. The Dominican Dandy allowed three runs in six innings, leaving with the game tied at three. Elias Sosa went the rest of the way for the Giants, surrendering the winning run on a two-out ninth-inning single by Dexter Fowler. Giovanny Gallegos was credited with his fourth win of the tournament after getting the final two outs of the ninth.

Game Seven pit Bryant and Mikolas, and there were no runs through four innings. Tito Fuentes led off the fifth with a single. The Giants put on the hit-and-run, and Dave Rader singled Fuentes to third. Bryant bunted Rader to second. St. Louis pulled the infield in, and Bobby Bonds singled past shortstop Paul DeJong to plate both runners. The Cardinals tied it in the sixth; Fowler singled to lead off and advanced on Goodson's error. DeJong singled Fowler home and stole second ahead of Goldschmidt's walk. After Wong fanned, Jose Martinez walked to load the bases, and Speier couldn't complete the double play on Tommy Edman's grounder. The tie held into the eighth. Tyler Webb entered at the start of the inning to strike out McCovey. He then walked Gary Matthews and got Goodson to ground out, with Matthews advancing to second. John Brebbia came into face Speier, but Spieir doubled to bring home Matthews with the final run of the tournament. McMahon, who entered to get the final out of the seventh, pitched a scoreless eighth, and Moffitt allowed a leadoff single in the ninth but then got a double play and a strikeout to end the game, the series and the tournament.

The Giants scored in double digits in three of their wins, blasting 11 homers in the six games of the series to match the powerful Bomba Squard in four-baggers while adjusting their pitching plans on the fly.

Game One, in Target Field, was quite the slugfest.  Bobby Bonds hit a three-run homer in the second as the Giants took a 5-0 lead. The Twins scored three in the second, with Marwin Gonzalez hitting a two-run homer. Gonzalez drove in two more in the third with a double as the Twins knocked Ron Bryant out of the box. But Jose Berrios couldn't survive the fourth, and the score was tied at seven after four innings. The Giants blasted three Twins relievers for six runs in the fifth inning, with Dave Rader, Bonds, Gary Matthews and Ed Goodson each hitting RBI doubles. John Willoughby held the Twins to two runs in six innings of relief for the win.

Game Two was a pitchers duel. Jake Odorizzi allowed one hit in the first four innings but left in the fifth with the bases loaded and one out. The Twins couldn't turn the double play on a Dave Rader grounder, and the Giants took a 1-0 lead. Chris Speier homered in the seventh off Sergio Romo. The Twins got a run in the seventh off Jim Barr, but Sam McDowell retired Max Kepler and Jorge Polanco with the tying run on second to escape the inning, and McDowell and Elias Sosa didn't allow a runner the rest of the way.

Eddie Rosario had a big day in Game Three, hitting homers in his first two Candlestick Park at-bats and diving in five runs in all. Michael Pineda allowed two earned runs in seven innings for the win. 

The Giants bats exploded again in Game Four. Goodson capped a four-run first with a three-run homer off Kyle Gibson, and San Francisco took a 5-0 lead into the fourth. The Twins then ralled for seven runs, with the first eight hitters reaching base against Bryant (one on an error). Bryant walked two and hit a batter. The Twins added a run in the fifth to lead 8-5. But Gary Thomasson doubled in two runs pinch-hitting for Don McMahon to make it a one-run margin, and Juan Marichal, pressed into relief duty because of all the short starts, worked two scoreless innings. Bonds and Willie McCovery each slugged two-run homers in the seventh to take the lead, and Randy Moffitt sealed the win with two scoreless innings.

The Twins staved off elimination with a 3-2 win in Game Five. Ehrie Adrianza and Kepler homered in a three-run fifth ofr a 3-2 lead. Berrios and relievers Tyler Duffey and Sergio Romo made that margin stand up.

But that was the last lead for the series for the favored Twins. Goodson doubled in a pair of runs in the first for the visiting Giants in Game Six, Bonds doubled in another run in the second, Dave Kingman homered in the third and the Giants had five runs off Odorizzi. Rosario doubled in two runs in the bottom of the third, but Bonds and Garry Maddox hit back-to-back homers in the fifth of Martin Perez. The Giants scored two runs in each of the last two innings. Tom Bradley went seven innings, allowing four runs on 12 hits, with Sosa getting the final six outs.

Player availability: No injuries, and the Giants bullpen will be fully available for the first game of the finals.

Projected rotation: Unsettled. Marichal pitched two games in relief in this series, but is available to start Game Two if needed. Bryant will start Games 1, 4 and, if necessary, 7. Preliminary plan: Bryant-Barr-Bradley-Bryant-(Barr)-(Bradley)-(Bryant)

The Giants averaged more than seven runs a game in this series -- and that includes a shutout. In their wins, they scored nine runs a game.

Game One's final margin was deceptive. Ubaldo Jimenez and Ron Bryant dueled through six innings in Coors Field, with the Giants holding a 2-0 lead when Jimenez departed for a pinch-hitter. The visitors promptly jumped on reliever Jason Hammel for two runs in the seventh, and knocked Rafael Betancourt and Joe Beimel around for five runs in the ninth, including a three-run pinch-hit homer by Dave Kingman. Willie McCovey. Chris Speier and Tito Fuentes each had two RBIs for the Giants.

Starters Tom Bradley and Aaron Cook did not fare so well in the second game. Cook was driven from the game in the third inning, having allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks. Bradley also gave up six runs, but he go through 5.1 innings in the process. The Rockies had seven straight hitters reach base in their four-run sixth inning: three walks, three singles and a hit batsman. 

The Rockies kept on scoring after the series moved to Candlestick Park for Game Three. Fuentes clubbed a three-run homer off Jorge de la Rosa in the first to cap a five-run inning, and Kingman belted another three-run homer in the second. Bobby Bonds had four hits and three runs. Jim Barr gave up two runs on six hits in eight innings for the win.

Jason Marquis stopped the Giants cold in Game Four with a two-hit shutout. Marquis at one point retired 16 straight hitters, and he allowed only a ninth-inning walk after Bonds singled in the third inning. The complete game was appreciated by the bedraggled Colorado bullpen. Carlos Gonzalez and Ian Stewart each homered off Juan Marichal.

The Giants resumed hitting in Game Five. McCovey and Gary Matthews hit back-to-back homers in the first inning off Jimenez, and McCovey hit a second two-run shot in the fifth. The Rockies hit three homers of their own off Bryant. The Giants bullen pulled two escape acts to seal the game and series. Don McMahon entered for the eighth inning with 6-5 lead and immediately allowed a single and double. He then struck out Dexter Fowler, got Clint Barmes to tap back to the mount and got Ian Stewart on a dribbler to the catcher. McMahon opened the ninth by allowing a double and hit batter. Randy Moffitt relieved to strike out Ryan Spilboughs and get Yorbit Torrealba and Seth Smith to fly out, with a walk after the first two outs.

The 1973 Giants knocked off a second straight strong Oakland team, this time holding a World Series champion to 15 runs in the six games, with the majority of those runs coming in one contest.

Catfish Hunter dominated Game One, played in the Oakland-Aldemeda County Coliseum. He held the Giants to two hits in the complete game shutout. He did walk four with six strikeouts. Ron Bryant also had a two-hit complete game, albeit of eight innings. Reggie Jackson homered in the fourth inning, and Bill North tripled to lead off the eighth and scored on a wild pitch. 

Juan Marichal held the A's to one unearned run in 7.1 innings in Game Two as the Giants evened the series. Gary Matthews hit a solo homer and singled in a run to highlight the visitors' offense against Ken Holtzman. Marichal allowed seven singles but no extra base hits or walks. Randy Moffitt relieved with two on and one out in the eighth and got Gene Tenace to ground into a double play, then worked a perfect ninth. All four A's to face Moffitt grounded out to second baseman Tito Fuentes.

The series moved across the Bay to San Francisco for Game Three and the only slugfest of the series. The A's scored three runs in the fourth off Tom Bradley, with Bert Campaneris stealing a pair of bases in the process. Bobby Bonds pulled the Giants within a run in the fifth with a three-run homer off Vida Blue, but Jim Willoughby cracked in the eighth as the A's racked up five runs. The Giants got three back in the bottom of the inning off Paul Lindblad, but that was as close as they got. Blue allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings.

Jim Barr and Elias Sosa combined for a seven-hit shutout in Game Four to again even the series. Barr went seven innings, allowing five hits, and Sosa navigated a pair of leadoff hits in the final two innings. Ed Good doubled in a run in the fourth after Blue Moon Odom walked Matthews with two outs and a passed ball eluded Ray Fosse, and Bonds tripled in a pair in the seventh against Horacio Pina.

Hunter and Bryant matched up in another duel in Game Five, and this time Bryant emerged victorious. Jackson homered in the third for the A's only run. The Giants tied it in the fourth when North misplayed Doug Rader's single to center and Fuentes scored from first on the error. The A's pinch-hit for Hunter in the seventh in an unsuccessful attempt to score a run, and Dave Hamilton held the Giants scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings. But he walked the first two men in the bottom of the ninth. Rollie Fingers relieved, and pinch-hitter Chris Arnold greeted him with a single to the gap that plated Fuentes.

The series returned to Oakland, and Marichal again smothered the A's lineup, this time for 7.2 innings. Dave Kingman hit a two-run homer off Holtzman in the second and Bond added a solo homer in the eighth for a 3-0 lead. Oakland got a run on three singles in the bottom of the inning to chase Marichal, but Sosa popped up Tenace to end the threat. The A's got a single in the ninth, but Sosa promptly got a double play and faced just three men to close out the game and the series.

Player availability: No injuries, and the Giants bullpen will be fullly rested for Round Four.

Down three games to one, the 1973 San Francisco Giants pounded Oakland's pitching for 23 runs to win the final three games and take the series.

The opener, in Oakland, was the one true pitcher's duel of the series. The A's got solo homers from Khris Davis and Matt Olson, and Mike Fiers allowed one run in seven innings for the win. 

Jim Barr went seven innings, allowing two earned runs, for the Game Two win at the Giants evened the series. The Giants 1-4 hitters hit for the cycle in the fourth inning off Brett Anderson -- Bobby Bonds led off with a homer, Garry Maddox singled. Gary Matthews tripled and Willie McCovey doubled. 

The series moved across the Bay to Candlestick Park for Game Three. Maddox hit a bases-loaded triple in the third as the Giants took a 5-1 lead and drove Homer Bailey from the game. But the A's chipped away at Tom Bradley, making his first start since his series-clinching no-hitter in the first round, for a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Elias Sosa relieved to open the seventh and gave up a a grand slam to Matt Olson, which gave the A's an 8-5 lead that stood. Oakland used five relief pitchers over the final six innings.

The Giants jumped on the A's early in Game Four again only to see another big lead go away. Dave Rader and Willie McCovey homered in the second inning as San Francisco took a 9-2 lead off Tanner Roark. But Juan Marichal couldn't make it through the fifth inning, as the A's scored five runs on a double, two walks and four singles. Oakland capped the comeback with a three-run ninth aided by a pair of errors by Ed Goodson at third base. That rally tied the game at 11, a score that stood until Robbie Grossman homered in the 13th off Randy Moffitt.

Both teams scored three runs in the first inning of Game Five, but Fiers and Bryant steadied after that. Oakland took a 5-3 lead in the sixth on a two-run homer by Matt Chapman. But with their bullpen depleted by consecutive short starts, the A's tried to ride Fiers too far. Dave Kingman, pinch-hitting for Bryant, tied the game with a homer, and the Giants took the lead in the seventh on a Tito Fuentes sac fly.

The series moved back to Oakland. The Giants broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning of Game Six with three unearned runs off Anderson. Barr took a three-hitter into the ninth, but was pulled after walking the leadoff man, with Sam McDowell getting one out and Sosa the last two to even the series.

Game Seven turned into a rout early. Maddox hit a solo homer in the first. The A's tied it in the second on a Josh Phegley double. But the Giants scored six runs in the third -- an inning that only ended end Fuentes was caught on the hidden ball trick -- and added on in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. 

Player availablity: No injuries for the Giants, and the bullpen will be fully ready for Round Three
