The 1973 Giants knocked off a second straight strong Oakland team, this time holding a World Series champion to 15 runs in the six games, with the majority of those runs coming in one contest.

Catfish Hunter dominated Game One, played in the Oakland-Aldemeda County Coliseum. He held the Giants to two hits in the complete game shutout. He did walk four with six strikeouts. Ron Bryant also had a two-hit complete game, albeit of eight innings. Reggie Jackson homered in the fourth inning, and Bill North tripled to lead off the eighth and scored on a wild pitch. 

Juan Marichal held the A's to one unearned run in 7.1 innings in Game Two as the Giants evened the series. Gary Matthews hit a solo homer and singled in a run to highlight the visitors' offense against Ken Holtzman. Marichal allowed seven singles but no extra base hits or walks. Randy Moffitt relieved with two on and one out in the eighth and got Gene Tenace to ground into a double play, then worked a perfect ninth. All four A's to face Moffitt grounded out to second baseman Tito Fuentes.

The series moved across the Bay to San Francisco for Game Three and the only slugfest of the series. The A's scored three runs in the fourth off Tom Bradley, with Bert Campaneris stealing a pair of bases in the process. Bobby Bonds pulled the Giants within a run in the fifth with a three-run homer off Vida Blue, but Jim Willoughby cracked in the eighth as the A's racked up five runs. The Giants got three back in the bottom of the inning off Paul Lindblad, but that was as close as they got. Blue allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings.

Jim Barr and Elias Sosa combined for a seven-hit shutout in Game Four to again even the series. Barr went seven innings, allowing five hits, and Sosa navigated a pair of leadoff hits in the final two innings. Ed Good doubled in a run in the fourth after Blue Moon Odom walked Matthews with two outs and a passed ball eluded Ray Fosse, and Bonds tripled in a pair in the seventh against Horacio Pina.

Hunter and Bryant matched up in another duel in Game Five, and this time Bryant emerged victorious. Jackson homered in the third for the A's only run. The Giants tied it in the fourth when North misplayed Doug Rader's single to center and Fuentes scored from first on the error. The A's pinch-hit for Hunter in the seventh in an unsuccessful attempt to score a run, and Dave Hamilton held the Giants scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings. But he walked the first two men in the bottom of the ninth. Rollie Fingers relieved, and pinch-hitter Chris Arnold greeted him with a single to the gap that plated Fuentes.

The series returned to Oakland, and Marichal again smothered the A's lineup, this time for 7.2 innings. Dave Kingman hit a two-run homer off Holtzman in the second and Bond added a solo homer in the eighth for a 3-0 lead. Oakland got a run on three singles in the bottom of the inning to chase Marichal, but Sosa popped up Tenace to end the threat. The A's got a single in the ninth, but Sosa promptly got a double play and faced just three men to close out the game and the series.

Player availability: No injuries, and the Giants bullpen will be fullly rested for Round Four.

The A's jumped on Zach Greinke early in the opener at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, with Reggie Jackson driving in three runs on a pair of doubles in the first two inning. Bert Campaneris scored three runs and Bill North two. Catfish Hunter went the distance, allowing just three hits, but two of them were homers.

Arizona jumped in front in Game Two on a two-run homer by Wilmer Flores in the second, and Ketel Marte made it 3-0 with a fifth-inning single. Robbie Ray left after 5.6 scoreless innings (three hits and four walks) and the A's tied it with a three-run seventh off relievers Yoshihisa Hirano and T.J. MacFarland, with the lead-footed Gene Tenace scoring from first on Sal Bando's two-run double to tie. Campaneris had two sac flies, the second bringing home Joe Rudi with the winning run.

The series moved to Phoenix for Game Three, which was a slugfest. Vida Blue carried a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth but didn't retire a batter in the frame. Eduardo Escobar had a two-run triple, and Mater singled in two runs as well. Dick Green bunted home pinch-runner Vic Davalillo in the 10th for the go-ahead run.

Down 3-0, Arizona drove Blue Moon Odom out of the box after three innings and tagged long man Dave Hamilton for three runs in the sixth inning, while Zac Gallen held the A's to one run in six innings. Nick Ahmed had a pair of RBI doubles, and Gallen himself singled in two runs.

The Snakes sent the series back to Oakland as Greinke outpitched Hunter in Game Five. Greinke allowed two runs on five hits in six innings. Hunter, with the A's bullpen stretched by two short starts, went the distance again but allowed three runs on eight hits, two hit batters and four walks.

North opened Game Six with a solo homer for the A's and drew a bases-loaded walk in the second. Campaneris had a pair of RBI singles and Deron Johnson had two hits and scored a pair of runs. Ken Holtzman went eight innings for the A's, and Darold Knowles had a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the win and the series.

The 1973 champions got off to a ringing start in Game One, with both Reggie Jackson and Gene Tenace hitting first ining homers in Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Catfish Hunter allowed two runs in seven innings, both scored by Domingo Santana (homer and double). Paul Lindbald threw a wild pitch to plate a run in the eighth, and Rollie Fingers relieved in the ninth to pick up the save.

Seattle hit three homers off Ken Holtzman to take Game Two. The biggest blow was a three-run shot by Dylan Moore. Kyle Seager and Austin Nola hit solo homers off Holtzman, who went the distance. Yusei Kikuchi allowed one run in six innings, after which Austin Adams and Matt Magill each tossed a scoreless frame. Closer Roenis Elias staggered through a two-run ninth, which ended with two men in scoring position on Deron Johnson's deep fly ball.

The series moved to Safeco Field, where Vida Blue and Fingers combined for a four-hitter. Ted Kubiak, filling in for the injured Dick Green, hit a two-run homer in the fifth off Mike Leake to put the A's ahead, and they tacked on two more runs in the sixth.

King Felix Hernandez reached into his days of greatness in Game Four. He allowed one hit in his first seven innings and left after allowing a one-out double in the eighth. Tommy Milone retired pinch-hitter Johnson and Bert Campaneris to end the eighth, and Elias allowed a harmless single in the ninth. Santana homered off reliever Darold Knowles for the go-ahead run in the sixth, and Mallex Smith singled in the other run in the seventh.

With the series tied at 2, Seattle took a 2-1 lead on Mitch-Haniger's homer in the fifth. But Joe Rudi homered with a man on in the sixth to put the A's in front, and Jackson singled in an insurance run in the seventh. Fingers walked home a man in the bottom of the eighth but allowed nothing more.

Holtzman, battered in the second game, was masterful in the sixth game. He kept the visitors hitless until the seventh, when Seager singled, and finished with a one-hitter. He walked two and struck out four. The A's didn't hit any homers, but got doubles from Sal Bando, Johnson, Green and Ray Fosse and a triple from Tenace as they scored five runs off Kikuchi in four innings.

Player availability: If Holtzman pitches Game Two as planned, he will lose an inning of durablity for that start.
