The A's jumped on Zach Greinke early in the opener at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, with Reggie Jackson driving in three runs on a pair of doubles in the first two inning. Bert Campaneris scored three runs and Bill North two. Catfish Hunter went the distance, allowing just three hits, but two of them were homers.
Arizona jumped in front in Game Two on a two-run homer by Wilmer Flores in the second, and Ketel Marte made it 3-0 with a fifth-inning single. Robbie Ray left after 5.6 scoreless innings (three hits and four walks) and the A's tied it with a three-run seventh off relievers Yoshihisa Hirano and T.J. MacFarland, with the lead-footed Gene Tenace scoring from first on Sal Bando's two-run double to tie. Campaneris had two sac flies, the second bringing home Joe Rudi with the winning run.
The series moved to Phoenix for Game Three, which was a slugfest. Vida Blue carried a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth but didn't retire a batter in the frame. Eduardo Escobar had a two-run triple, and Mater singled in two runs as well. Dick Green bunted home pinch-runner Vic Davalillo in the 10th for the go-ahead run.
Down 3-0, Arizona drove Blue Moon Odom out of the box after three innings and tagged long man Dave Hamilton for three runs in the sixth inning, while Zac Gallen held the A's to one run in six innings. Nick Ahmed had a pair of RBI doubles, and Gallen himself singled in two runs.
The Snakes sent the series back to Oakland as Greinke outpitched Hunter in Game Five. Greinke allowed two runs on five hits in six innings. Hunter, with the A's bullpen stretched by two short starts, went the distance again but allowed three runs on eight hits, two hit batters and four walks.
North opened Game Six with a solo homer for the A's and drew a bases-loaded walk in the second. Campaneris had a pair of RBI singles and Deron Johnson had two hits and scored a pair of runs. Ken Holtzman went eight innings for the A's, and Darold Knowles had a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the win and the series.
