Even with the pennant secured, the Quakers kept winning despite going homerless in the four game set.

Lincoln Park opened the series with a three-run first inning off Ted Lyons, getting doubles from Charles Blackwell and Art Pennington. Two of the runs were unearned. Lyons then kept the home team off the board the rest of the way, finishing with a nine-hitter. Meanwhile the Quakers got two in the third before tying it in the sixth and taking the lead in the seventh. Max Carey scored two runs and drove in one for Guilford; he also stole a base.

Alec Radcliff hit a two-run homer in the first for the Black Caps, who once again opened with a three-run inning. The Quakers waited until the fourth to break through against Tom Williams; in that inning they got doubles from Carey. Hank Greenberg Larry Doby and Rick Ferrell as they scored four times to take the lead. Guilford added two more in the ninth. Greenberg had three RBIs and Doby two; Carey again scored twice and Ferrell had a pair of doubles.

The Quakers hit four triples in the third game of the series. Carey and Greenberg each had three-baggers in the first inning, Doby tripled in a pair of runs in the third, and Joe Tinker had an RBI triple in the ninth. Gilford also had three doubles. Carey again scored two runs, while Doby drove in three. Greenberg and Rabbit Maranville each had three hits. Tony Kaufmann went the distance on the mound, scattering five hits.

Blackwell's leadoff homer in the bottom of the ninth of the finale off Guy Bush salvaged one game for Lincoln Park. Guilford started Vic Keen, normally their closer, and he allowed a pair of unearned runs in eight innings. But Bill Holland (five innings) and Webster McDonald (three innings) allowed just two runs themselves over the first eight innings. Bill Drake tossed a scoreless ninth and got the win when Blackwell, the first and only man Bush faced, homered.

The Rams are eliminated from pennant contention.

A second-inning triple by Phil Rizzuto was in the middle of a two-run rally that gave Raymond a 3-1 lead going into the eighth inning behind Earl Whitehill. But Rabbit Maranville led off the top of the eighth with a walk, and Jigger Statz, pinch-hitting for Red Faber, doubled, Max Carey (who had homered in the sixth) singled in Maranville, and that chased Whitehill. Dutch Leonard gave up a run-scoring single to Johnny Evers before striking out Hank Greenberg and getting Larry Doby to ground out on a play in which Carey was thrown out at the plate, But with two outs, Tony Perez singled to score Evers. Rip Wheeler and Vic Keen protected the lead in the final two innings.

The Rams routed the Quakers in the next game, ripping Vic Aldridge for six runs in the opening frame. Ray Schalk hit a grand slam, his first home run of the season, to cap the uprising, which featured four walks. Aldridge surrendered nine runs, seven earned, in four innings. Meanwhile, Gaylord Perry took a shutout into the ninth and ended with a complete-game eight hitter. Hack Wilson scored three runs for the Rams.

Guilford won another close game in the series finale. Elmer Jacobs went the distance for the Quakers, allowing nine hits, Rick Ferrell had a three-run double in the first inning, and Greenberg was 4-for-4 (all singles) with a walk.

Pitcher availability: Guy Bush (four innings of relief in the second game) should sit at least one more for the Quakers, The rest of their bullpen is fully rested. The Rams got complete games in each of the last two games and their bullpen is fully rested.

Projected rotations: Rams -- will finish the season with Collina and Holloway, although I might sub in Lil Stoner for one of those two. Quakers -- finish with Lyons-Faber-Kaufmann-Aldridge.

The Quakers emerge from Series 18 with a four game lead, while the Black Caps slipped from second to fourth.

Guilford held a 4-0 lead behind Elmer Jacobs after five innings of the opener. Larry Doby hit a two-run homer off Tom Williams in the fifth. But the Black Caps turned three singles, a walk, a Joe Tinker throwing error and a sac fly into three runs in the sixth, and erupted for five runs in the eighth off Jacobs and Sheriff Blake. Hilton Smith threw three innings of one-hit relief for the win; he allowed an unearned run.

The Quakers bounced back to outscore Lincoln Park in the second game. Jerry Benjamin hit two homers for the Black Caps, and Alec Radcliff hit a homer, two doubles and a single. The Quakers didn't get a fourbagger, but they had extra bases aplenty themselves, with three triples and four doubles. Every starter for Guilford, including pitcher Tony Kaufmann, had at least one hit and either a run scored or an RBI. Max Carey was 3-for-5 with two runs and a pair of doubles.

Ted Lyons threw a complete-game seven hitter in the finale, allowing two earned runs. He twice got double plays with the bases loaded to escape jams. Doby was 2-for-3 with two runs and a double, and Carey was 3-for-4 with a homer.

Pitcher availability: The Quakers bullpen is fully rested. For the Black Caps: Streeter sits four games to start, three to relieve; Drake sits three games for either purpose; Williams sits two to start, one to relieve. Cockrell is eligible to relieve in their next game, and Holland is eligible to relieve but should not pitch more than one inning.

The Quakers continued their push for the pennant by winning their third straight series, scoring 25 runs in the three games against the Rams.

There was hitting aplenty from the beginning. Both the visiting Rams and the homestanding Quakers scored four runs in the first inning. The Quakers added another four run outburst in the fifth. Joe Tinker (3-for-4) had five RBIs for Guilford, and Rick Ferrell (3-for-4) scored three times and had a pair of doubles. Nellie Fox hit a three-run homer in the seventh for the Rams; he had four RBIs and scored twice. For Guilford, Max Carey, Larry Doby and Tony Perez each scored two runs.

The Rams battered Ted Lyons for six runs in the second inning of the second game and were never seriously threatened after that. Perez hit a pair of solo homers off Red Ruffing. Hack Wilson drove in three for Raymond, including his league-leading 18th homer of the season. Earle Combs also had three RBIs for the Rams.

The Quakers took the rubber game, with Red Faber contributing the only quality start for either squad. Faber went eight innings, allowing three runs on nine hits. Earl Whitehill was just as sound for seven innings,but Guilford erupted for four runs with two outs in the eighth to break the tie. Rabbit Maranville knocked a two-run triple to highlight the inning.

Pitcher availability: Sheriff Blake worked one inning in the finale for the Quakers; the rest of the bullpen is rested. Syl Johnson will sit a game for the Rams.The rest of their bullpen is rested.

The first-place Quilford Quakers expanded their lead to 4.5 games by taking two of three from second-place Fordham.

The Flashes started off well, scoring three runs in the first inning of the opener, with Chick Hafey hitting a two-run homer. Tony Perez tied it in the third with a three-run shot off Jesse Haines, but Hafey's triple in the fifth keyed a two-run inning and the Flashes added two more in the sixth. Haines allowed three earned runs and eight hits in 8.1 innings for the win.

The Quakers stormed back with three homers in the second game. Larry Doby and Tony Perez each had three RBIs to back Red Faber, who didn't allow a run in the first six innings and allowed three runs in eight innings in all. Doby tripled and homered, while Perez and Rick Ferrell hit back-to-back homers in the eighth.

The Flashes scored two runs in the top of the first of the third game but left the bases loaded against Tony Kaufmann. After Ferrell and Jim Bottomley exchanged homers, the Quakers took the lead with three runs in the third, with Doby driving in two with a double. Guilford blew it open with a three-run eighth that started with three consecutive walks. The Flashes scored three runs in the final two frames, but all that accomplished was to set up a save for Sheriff Blake.

Pitcher availability: Blake pitched one inning for the Quakers; all other relievers are fully rested. For the Flashes, Mule Watson worked one inning in the finale; other relievers are fully rested.

The Rams even the series in extra innings in the second game. Hack Wilson hit a two-run homer in the third to give Raymond a 3-0 lead, but the Quakers tied it in the bottom of the eighth. The 3-3 tie held into the 11th, when Nellie Fox doubled and went to third on Hank Greenberg's error in left field. Ray Schalk then bunted Fox home. Hooks Dauss pitched around a double (Rick Ferrell) and a single (Maranville) to nail it down.

The Quakers took the rubber game behind a six-run eighth inning against Gaylord Perry. Perry had retired two of the first three men he faced in the eighth, but Ferrell walked, Joe Tinker doubled, Maranville singled, pinch-hitter Cliff Heathcote walked, Max Carey doubled and Johnny Evers singled. That was enough to make a winner of Guy Bush, even though Vic Keen yielded a three-run homer to Wilson in the ninth.

Pitcher availability: For the Quakers, Keen and Bush each pitched one inning in the finale; everybody else in the bullpen is fully rested. The Rams' entire bullpen is fully rested for their next game.
