Even with the pennant secured, the Quakers kept winning despite going homerless in the four game set.

Lincoln Park opened the series with a three-run first inning off Ted Lyons, getting doubles from Charles Blackwell and Art Pennington. Two of the runs were unearned. Lyons then kept the home team off the board the rest of the way, finishing with a nine-hitter. Meanwhile the Quakers got two in the third before tying it in the sixth and taking the lead in the seventh. Max Carey scored two runs and drove in one for Guilford; he also stole a base.

Alec Radcliff hit a two-run homer in the first for the Black Caps, who once again opened with a three-run inning. The Quakers waited until the fourth to break through against Tom Williams; in that inning they got doubles from Carey. Hank Greenberg Larry Doby and Rick Ferrell as they scored four times to take the lead. Guilford added two more in the ninth. Greenberg had three RBIs and Doby two; Carey again scored twice and Ferrell had a pair of doubles.

The Quakers hit four triples in the third game of the series. Carey and Greenberg each had three-baggers in the first inning, Doby tripled in a pair of runs in the third, and Joe Tinker had an RBI triple in the ninth. Gilford also had three doubles. Carey again scored two runs, while Doby drove in three. Greenberg and Rabbit Maranville each had three hits. Tony Kaufmann went the distance on the mound, scattering five hits.

Blackwell's leadoff homer in the bottom of the ninth of the finale off Guy Bush salvaged one game for Lincoln Park. Guilford started Vic Keen, normally their closer, and he allowed a pair of unearned runs in eight innings. But Bill Holland (five innings) and Webster McDonald (three innings) allowed just two runs themselves over the first eight innings. Bill Drake tossed a scoreless ninth and got the win when Blackwell, the first and only man Bush faced, homered.

Lincoln Park is mathematically eliminated.

Bill Perkins hit a pair of solo homers and Art Pennington hit a two-run shot in the opener for the Black Caps. Perkins was 4-for-4 and added a double. Verdell Mathis went six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits but inducing two double plays to get out of innings.

Dixie Davis got his first win of the season in his final start. Ortonville gave him a 4-0 lead after two innings, with Billy Herman hitting a two-run homer in the second, Bill Holland left after the second for Lincoln Park, and Phil Cockrell threw five innings of one run relief to give the Black Caps a chance to get back into the game. But after the Caps drove Davis from the hill in the seventh, the relief trio of Elam Vangilder, Hub Pruett and Dave Danforth allowed no hits in the final eight outs.

The Orators sliced up Rube Currie for eight runs in 1.3 innings in Game Three, getting 11 hits and a walk in 15 batters. Kiki Cuyler went 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs, while Richie Ashburn, Herman and Dan Brouthers each scored twice. Dave Malarcher had a bases-loaded triple for Lincoln Park

Brouthers hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eights off Andy Cooper for the comeback win in the series finale. Charles Blackwell and Spoony Palm had each homered as the Black Caps built a 3-1 lead behind Bill Drake, who at one point retired 17 straight Orators, But Travis Jackson led off the bottom of the eighth with a homer, and one out later Ashburn walked and Herman singled, Cooper entered, and Brouthers promptly homered. Danforth allowed a pair of two-out hits in the top of the ninth before getting out of the inning.

Pitcher availability: For the Orators, Danforth went one inning in the finale, and the rest of the bullpen is fully rested. Wingard can relieve in the final game. For the Black Caps, Drake should sit three games; Currie should sit two games for either purpose; Cockrell should sit one for either purpose; Mathis should sit one game to start.

The Quakers emerge from Series 18 with a four game lead, while the Black Caps slipped from second to fourth.

Guilford held a 4-0 lead behind Elmer Jacobs after five innings of the opener. Larry Doby hit a two-run homer off Tom Williams in the fifth. But the Black Caps turned three singles, a walk, a Joe Tinker throwing error and a sac fly into three runs in the sixth, and erupted for five runs in the eighth off Jacobs and Sheriff Blake. Hilton Smith threw three innings of one-hit relief for the win; he allowed an unearned run.

The Quakers bounced back to outscore Lincoln Park in the second game. Jerry Benjamin hit two homers for the Black Caps, and Alec Radcliff hit a homer, two doubles and a single. The Quakers didn't get a fourbagger, but they had extra bases aplenty themselves, with three triples and four doubles. Every starter for Guilford, including pitcher Tony Kaufmann, had at least one hit and either a run scored or an RBI. Max Carey was 3-for-5 with two runs and a pair of doubles.

Ted Lyons threw a complete-game seven hitter in the finale, allowing two earned runs. He twice got double plays with the bases loaded to escape jams. Doby was 2-for-3 with two runs and a double, and Carey was 3-for-4 with a homer.

Pitcher availability: The Quakers bullpen is fully rested. For the Black Caps: Streeter sits four games to start, three to relieve; Drake sits three games for either purpose; Williams sits two to start, one to relieve. Cockrell is eligible to relieve in their next game, and Holland is eligible to relieve but should not pitch more than one inning.

The Lincoln Park Black Caps moved above .500 and into second place in the standings, but misfired on several opportunities to complete a series sweep going into a series against the first-place Guilford Quakers.

The Black Caps battered four Orators pitchers for 19 hits, 10 walks and a HBP in the opener and batted around three times. Bonnie Serrell drove in five runs, two on bases-loaded walks and three on an eighth-inning homer. Charles Blackwell (4-for-6) scored three times and had a triple. Art Pennington, Spoony Palm and Serrell each drew three walks. The Orators had 19 hits of their own and went through all four available Black Caps pitchers. Billy Herman and Kiki Cuyler each scored three runs.

The hitting continued in the second game. The Black Caps hit for the cycle in the first inning against Don Sutton -- triple by Jerry Benjamin, single by Alec Radcliff, double by Pennington, homer by Palm. Starter Rube Currie, working on one day's rest after a disastrous two-inning start to close the previous series, homered in the second and got through five innings of two-run ball. Lincoln Park had 16 hits in this one.

Ferguson Jenkins settled things down in the finale for Ortonville, He worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the first inning, and escaped the third when Heinie Manush gunned down Vic Harris at the plate. Manush broke the scoreless tie with a two-run triple in the fifth off Phil Cockrell, and while the Black Caps tied it with single tallies in the fifth and sixth, the Orators stung Cockrell for a pair of two-out runs, the last coming on a pinch-hit double by Ken Williams off reliever Sam Streeter. Bill Perkins homered in the eighth to make it a one-run game, but Dave Danforth surfed a wave of right-handed pinch hitters in the ninth to nail it down.

Pitcher availability: Ray Kolp sits the next game for the Orators. Danforth pitched one inning in the finale. For the Black Caps: Cockrell needs four games to start, two to relieve; Currie needs three to start, two to relieve; Mathis needs two to start, one to relieve; McDonald and Holland need one game for either purpose. Streeter faced two hitters in the finale.
