Red Faber threw two complete game shutouts to lead Chicago to the upset.
The Twins battered Sloppy Thurston for five runs in the first inning of the opener, driving the Chicago workhorse from the mound after one frame, and tagged reliever Ted Lyons for three more runs in two innings. Eduardo Escobar and Max Kepler each had two-run doubles in the first inning, and Miguel Sano hit a two-run homer in the second.
Faber responded with a five-hit shutout in the second game. The spitballer walked two and struck out five. Willie Kamm hit a two-run homer in the second inning off Jose Berrios.
The series moved to Comiskey Park for Game Three, and Kyle Gibson and the Twins bullpen shut out the Pale Hose. Gibson scattered seven hits and four walks in 6.1 innings; Alan Busenitz, Taylor Rogers, Buddy Boshers and Phil Hughes combined for eight outs with one baserunner and two doubleplays. Kepler drove in three runs, and Jorge Polanco doubled twice for the Twins.
Chicago evened the series in Game Four, as Lyons went the distance, allowing nine hits. Twins starter Hector Santiago left with an injury after two scoreless innings, and the Twins bullpen couldn't dupliate its stellar Game 3 performance. Ray Schalk went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Earl Sheely also went 3-for-4 with two runs; Sheely hit a pair of doubles and drove in a run.
Charlie Robertson allowed three hits in eight innings of Game Five, while his teammates stun Ervin Santana for a pair of runs in the third inning. Robertson walked three and fanned eight. Sarge Connally worked a hitless ninth for the only save of the series.
Back in Target Field, the Twins spotted the White Sox three runs in the first inning but clawed back against Thornton. Sano's fifth inning homer tied the game at 5, and Kepler's blast in the sixth put the Twins ahead to stay. Tyler Duffey threw four scoreless innings of relief for the win.
Faber came through in the finale with an eight-hitter. He retired the final eight hitters and finshed with seven strikeouts and two walks. Gibson allowed just one run in 4.2 innings, Harry Hooper's second homer of the series, but that was one more run than Faber surrendered.

The bottom-seeded Phillies took the opener in Yankee Stadium, with light-hitting catcher Clay Dalrymple homering for their first run and singling in the go-ahead run in the 12th. Tony Kubek and Maris hit back-to-back homers in the first inning off Robin Roberts, and Maris hit another in the third. Chris Short allowed one run in four-plus innings of relief to give the Phillies the chance for the extra-inning win.
Ralph Terry evened the series with a two-hit shutout. He allowed just four baserunners -- a hit batter and an error -- and wiped one out with a double play grounder. Maris hit a two-run homer in the sixth for all the runs.
The series moved to Philadelphia and Connie Mack Stadium for Game Three. Maris homered in the first and drove in the final run with a ground out. Bill Stafford allowed one run in five innings for the win, with Rollie Sheldon, Hal Reniff and Luis Arroyo splitting the remaining four innings.
The Phillies led Game Four 5-3 after seven innings, but their bullpen couldn't hold the lead. The Yankees scored two in the top of the eighth and five more in the ninth, with Maris opening the inning with another homer. Kubek hit three doubles for the Yankees, driving in a pair in the ninth with his final two-bagger. Bobby Gene Smith and Bobby Del Greco hit back-to-back homers off Bud Daley in the fifth for the Phils.
Maris opened the scoring in Game Five with an RBI triple. He added a two-run homer in the fifth off Roberts. Whitey Ford allowed four runs in 6.1 innings but was credited with the win. Arroyo retired the final five batters to secure the game.

Home runs certainly dominated the opener at Fenway Park. The Red Sox led 7-1 after four innings with ace Chris Sale working, but Adam Duvall's homer in the six narrowed the margin to 8-4 and drove Sale from the game. The Reds got three solo homers in the eighth to tie the game, but got no more. Consecutive singles in the bottom of the 10 by Mitch Moreland, Sandy Leon and Jackie Bradly Jr. gave the Sox with win.
Scott Feldman allowed two runs in Game Two as the Reds evened the series. Zach Cozart hit a bases-loaded triple in the fifth to bust the game open. Scooter Gennett homered, doubled, scored twice and drove in a pair for Cincinnati.
The series shifted to Cincy and Great American Ballpark, and the Red Sox feasted on Homer Bailey. Their nine-run third featured five walks and five singles, plus a double. Mitch Moreland homered and drew three walks for Boston; he scored twice and drove in three. Drew Pomeranz allowed two hits in seven innings but walked five.
Sal Romero shut down the Red Sox in Game Four, throwing seven scoreless innings while scattering six hits. Scott Schebler doubled in two runs in in the third to give Cincinnati a 3-0 lead, and Romero, Drew Storen and Rafael Ingelsias held that lead the rest of the way.
Andrew Benintendi homered twice in Game Five to power another Red Sox rout. He drove in five runs. Bradley also hit a three-run homer. Sale allowed two hits and a run in the first inning and just three harmless singles in his next six innings while striking out eight.
The Sox put the series away back in Fenway with a 5-4 win powered by Rafeal Dever's three-run homer in the fourth. Rick Porcello went seven innings for the win, allowing three runs non seven hits and retiring the final seven men he faced.
