The Jays almost matched the Bomba squad in homers but couldn't keep up in total runs; the Twins scored 15 more in the six games.

Game One in Target Field set the high-scoring tone. The visiting Blue Jays scored four unearned runs over the final two innings as Miguel Sano committed a pair of errors at first base behind Sergio Romo and loser Martin Perez. Vernon Wells scored four runs and Jose Bautista three while Travis Snider and Rod Barajas each drove in a pair at the bottom of the Toronto order did a lot of damage.

Jorge Polanco's bottom of the 11th grand slam evened the series and made a winner of Taylor Rodgers, who worked three perfect innings with six strikeouts. Barajas drove in the two Toronto runs with a double and homer off Michael Pineda.

Max Kepler homered to lead off  Game Three in Rogers Centre. Lyle Overbay and Edwin Encarncion hit back-to-back homers in the second to even the score at 2. But in the fourth the Twins pummeled Scott Richmond for a pair of doubles and a two-run homer by Ehire Adrianaza. Nelson Cruz hit a solo homer in the fifth. Jake Odorizzi went 7.1 innings for the win. Encarncion hit a second solo homer in the ninth for the Jays.

Kyle Gibson took a shutout into the seventh inning of Game Four, by which time the Twins had built a 9-0 lead. Polanco hit a three-run homer in the third off Brian Tallet. Aaron Hill hit a grand slam in the seventh off Tyler Duffey for the Toronto runs. Perez finished the game for Minnesota with two perfect innings.

The Jays kept the series alive with a 15-inning win in Game Five. Adam Lind hit a three-run homer off Duffey in the bottom of the 15th after Jason Frasor (two innings) and Shawn Camp (four innings) combined to retire the final 18 Twins hitters. Ryne Harper had a remarkable escape in the 14th; after Vernon Wells singled and Overbay doubled, the Twins walked Encarncion intentionally to load the bases with no outs. Harper then struck out Bautista, Snider and Barajas.

The series returned to Target Field for Game Six. Toronto scored an unearned run off Pineda in the first, but the Twins scored two in the bottom of the inning and led the rest of the way. Marwin Gonzalez and Max Kepler each drove in a pair of runs in the sixth as the Twins scored five runs off loser Ricky Romero and Scott Downs. Mitch Garver capped the game with a two-run homer in the eighth.

Player availablity: Miguel Sano is out through Game Four for the next round and may be deactivated. The Twins bullpen will be fully rested for the opener.

The Giants averaged more than seven runs a game in this series -- and that includes a shutout. In their wins, they scored nine runs a game.

Game One's final margin was deceptive. Ubaldo Jimenez and Ron Bryant dueled through six innings in Coors Field, with the Giants holding a 2-0 lead when Jimenez departed for a pinch-hitter. The visitors promptly jumped on reliever Jason Hammel for two runs in the seventh, and knocked Rafael Betancourt and Joe Beimel around for five runs in the ninth, including a three-run pinch-hit homer by Dave Kingman. Willie McCovey. Chris Speier and Tito Fuentes each had two RBIs for the Giants.

Starters Tom Bradley and Aaron Cook did not fare so well in the second game. Cook was driven from the game in the third inning, having allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks. Bradley also gave up six runs, but he go through 5.1 innings in the process. The Rockies had seven straight hitters reach base in their four-run sixth inning: three walks, three singles and a hit batsman.

The Rockies kept on scoring after the series moved to Candlestick Park for Game Three. Fuentes clubbed a three-run homer off Jorge de la Rosa in the first to cap a five-run inning, and Kingman belted another three-run homer in the second. Bobby Bonds had four hits and three runs. Jim Barr gave up two runs on six hits in eight innings for the win.

Jason Marquis stopped the Giants cold in Game Four with a two-hit shutout. Marquis at one point retired 16 straight hitters, and he allowed only a ninth-inning walk after Bonds singled in the third inning. The complete game was appreciated by the bedraggled Colorado bullpen. Carlos Gonzalez and Ian Stewart each homered off Juan Marichal.

The Giants resumed hitting in Game Five. McCovey and Gary Matthews hit back-to-back homers in the first inning off Jimenez, and McCovey hit a second two-run shot in the fifth. The Rockies hit three homers of their own off Bryant. The Giants bullen pulled two escape acts to seal the game and series. Don McMahon entered for the eighth inning with 6-5 lead and immediately allowed a single and double. He then struck out Dexter Fowler, got Clint Barmes to tap back to the mount and got Ian Stewart on a dribbler to the catcher. McMahon opened the ninth by allowing a double and hit batter. Randy Moffitt relieved to strike out Ryan Spilboughs and get Yorbit Torrealba and Seth Smith to fly out, with a walk after the first two outs.

Player availability: Plenty of rest for the pitchers, no injuries.\

The Yankees Cinderella run ended as the Nationals bullpen, after a collapse in the opener, shut them down in the next four games. The Yankees did not homer until there were two out in their final inning.

The Nationals led 3-0 going into the eighth inning of the opener in Nationals Park. Reliever Fernando Rodney, after retiring the first hitter, walked the next three. Sean Doolittle entered and gave up three straight hits, with Bobby Murcer and Joe Pepitone each driving in a pair, and the Nats had to go to a third bullpenner, Javy Guerra, to get out of thefive-run inning. Jack Aker threw two scoreless innings in relief of winner Fritz Peterson.

There was no bullpen collapse in the second game. Howie Kendrick broke a 1-1 tie with a fourth-inning homer off Mel Stottlemyre, and the Nats added an insurance run in the eighth off Steve Hamilton. Guerra, Tanner Rainey and Doolittle combined for three scoreless innings of relief behind winner Stephen Strasburg.

The series shifted to 1969's version of Yankee Stadium. Patrick Corbin yielded one run in seven innings for the win. Trea Turner scored three runs for Washington, and both he and Adam Easton had three hits.

Peterson started Game Four on short rest and left after six innings with a 4-3 lead. The Nats took the lead three batters into Lindy McDaniel's outting -- single by Victor Robles and a homer by Turner -- and tacked on two more in the eighth after Brian Dozier led off with a triple. Relievers Guerra and Daniel Hudson worked three scoreless innings to close it out.

Max Scherzer, who got a no-decision in the opener, allowed just one run in six innings and handed a 2-1 lead to the bullpen. This time the bullpen held, with Rodney and Matt Grace each working a scoreless inning. Anthony Rendon's eighth-inning homer gave the Nats a 3-1 lead, and the extra run proved valuable when Bill Robinson, pinch-hitting against Doolittle, homered with two outs in the ninth. Gene Michael followed with a triple, but pinch-hitter Thurman Munson flew out to left and the game and series was over.

Player availablity: Plenty of off days for the Nats bullpen.

Projected rotation: Scherzer-Strasburg-Corbin-Sanchez-(Scherzer)-(Strasburg)-(Corbin)
