The Teddys thrashed the Franklins in their one-game playoff for the Division A title. They battered Lefty Grove, Waite Hoyt and Herb Pennock for 12 runs and 19 hits, six for extra bases.

Cobb was 4-for-4 with seven RBIs, a home runs, a triple, two steals and a walk. Bresnahan popped three doubles in four official at-bats with a walk; he scored three times, as did Baker.

And Alexander the Great lived up to his legend. He allowed a pair of solo homers (Joe DiMaggio and Gabby Hartnett) and worked out of repeated jams in the first five innings, but allowed just one baserunner in the final four frames.

Alexander struck out seven and walked four while allowing seven hits. Grove allowed eight runs in three innings.

Forty-four games were not enough to settle Division A. The Franklins and Teddys each finished with 28 wins and will have a one-game playoff at the Teddys home park.

The Franklins came oh-so-close to the sweep of the Kennedys they needed to secure the division title.

The Franklins controlled Game One almost from the get-go. They roughed up Steve Carlton for five runs in the second inning -- Lou Gerhig started the inning with a homer -- and led 7-1 after three innings. Some shaky defense helped the Kennedys pull within three but no closer.

Bob Gibson dominated the Franklins for six innings in the second game, but his 2-0 lead evaporated in the seventh when Carl Yastzremski muffed a Rogers Hornsby fly ball and Gehrig followed with a homer -- only the second hit of the game for the Franklins. In the next inning, Babe Ruth homered with a man on for the 4-2 final score.

Gibson was good; Bob Feller was at least as effective. Rapid Robert went eight innings of six-hit ball, striking out eight.

One win away from wrapping up the division title, the Franklins got a two-run homer in the first inning from Ruth. Reggie Jackson tied it in the fourth with a two-run shot of his own. Gehrig homered in the sixth -- the third and final hit for the Franklins against Juan Marichal -- for a 3-2 lead.

But in the eighth, Joe Morgan doubled with one out, and George Brett followed with a fly ball that Mel Ott muffed for a two-base error. Morgan scored to tie the game, and the Franklins could not score against relievers Sandy Koufax and Rollie Fingers.

The Kennedys scored in the 10th on a double by Robin Yount and a single by Hank Aaron. Dazzy Vance lost despite allowing just five hits in 10 innings; he walked three and struck out eight.

Both Ruth and Gehrig homered in each game of the series.

The Franklins kept the heat on their pursuers with the sweep of the flailing X-Giants.

The  Division A leaders rang up seven runs in the first inning of the opener, with Mel Ott contributing a double and a triple. He scored one run in the inning and drove in three.

Dazzy Vance went the distance, allowing three runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out eight. Double Duty Radcliffe went six innings of two-run relief for the X-Giants; the Franklins stranded 11 men against the scuffballer.

The second game was much closer. Rube Foster, who entered with a 7.38 ERA, held the powerful Franklins in check, allowing just one earned run in seven innings. But Lefty Grove allowed just three hits in his seven innings, and the score was tied at one when Pop Lloyd's two-out, two-base error allowed two runs to score.

Grove had to leave after a minor batting injury, and the X-Giants picked up a run in the eighth against Waite Hoyt, but Dizzy Dean locked down the ninth.

Babe Ruth was 5-for-8 in the series with three doubles and a home run. Ott was 5-for-10 with two triples and a double.

Series 16: Obamas take two of three from Franklins

In a slugfest series filled with home runs, big innings, comebacks and short starts, the Obamas made the already-tight Division A race even tighter.

It was the Obama bullpen that made the difference; their relief corps limited the potent Franklins to one run in 10 innings.

Lou Boudreau's walk-off homer in the opener climaxed a dogged comeback for the Obamas, who fell behind 6-0 in the first three innings. The Franklins hit three homers in the second off Eddie Plank, but they could do nothing the rest of the way against Jack Chesbro (one inning), Vic Willis (three innings) and Lefty Gomez (two innings).

Meanwhile, the Obamas got a two-run homer from Mike Schmidt in the fourth, a two-run bomb from Mickey Mantle in the seventh, and stole the game with a four-run outburst against starter Lefty Grove and closer Dizzy Dean in the ninth, ended with Boudreau's three-run homer.

Jackie Robinson, who pinch-hit for Plank in the third and remained in the game at second base, was 3-for-4 with a double and and RBI triple. The Obamas used their entire bench and all but one relief pitcher in the comeback.

The Franklins won a back-and-forth second game despite another go-ahead homer from Boudreau, this one in the eighth inning. The Franklins led 4-2 after six innings behind Carl Hubbell, but Jimmy Foxx homered in the seventh to tighten the margin to one, then Boudreau's two-run bomb put the Obamas ahead.

But Walter Johnson came one out shy of locking down the win. With two out and Mel Ott on in the ninth, Babe Ruth tripled. Rogers Hornsby singled the Babe home, and this time Dean closed it out, despite Mantle's leadoff double.

Bob Feller and Nolan Ryan promised a finale of fastballs and strikeouts, but what transpired were walks and long balls. Ryan walked 10 men in four innings; the Franklins added eight hits, seven of then doubles, to the mix for 11 runs.

But Feller wasn't much better. He walked the first three Obamas he faced, then grooved one to Mantle. He gave up a three-run homer to Foxx in the second  and left for a pinch hitter after just three innings (Paul Waner had one of the doubles against Ryan).

Herb Pennock, who has pitched poorly all season, got the call with an 11-7 lead and held the Obamas scoreless for three innings. But the Franklins tried to get a fourth from him, and he didn't retire a man in the seventh. By the time Stan Covaleski finally got three outs, the Obamas had scored seven runs -- four charged to Pennock, three to Covaleski -- and a 14-12 lead.

The Obamas had Big Ed Walsh work two innings to close it down, and Mike Schmidt gave the spitballer some insurance with a two-run homer in the eighth.

Mantle was 6-for-13 in the series with seven RBIs and four runs. Boudreau had five RBIs. Rogers Hornsby was 7-for-13 with four runs. Ruth was just 2-for-11 for the series. Vic Willis had five shutout innings of relief for the Obamas.

The Franklins pulled away late in both games to move into first place n Division A and deal suddenly-slumping Homestead a severe blow in the Division B race.

Solo homers by Dobie Moore and Hurley McNair helped Homestead take a 3-1 lead against Bob Feller in the first game. Lou Gehrig homered off Homestead lefty Dave Brown in the seventh to make it 3-2.

The game turned in the eighth. The previously unbeaten Brown walked three straight men after retiring the first batter, then induced a grounder from Gehrig that Moore kicked away, tying the score. Joe Cronin then tripled home three men, and scored himself off Gabby Hartnett's single.

Waite Hoyt got the win with a perfect eighth inning. Herb Pennock mopped up, allowing a run in the ninth.

Dazzy Vance dazzled in the nightcap, allowing one run on three hits in eight innings while striking out eight. The Franklins opened the margin in the final two frames against Ray Brown, including Babe Ruth's 18th home run. Hoyt allowed a run in the ninth.

Gehrig was 3-for-6 in the series with four runs, a homer and a double. Moore had three RBIs for Homestead.

Series 14: Teddys take two of three from Franklins

The Teddys' relentless base-hit attack woke up late in the second game, and their ability to string base-hits together resulted in a dead heat atop Division A.

The first game was dominated by the Franklins. Dazzy Vance threw a three-hitter at the Teddys, and the Franklins chipped away at Three-Finger Brown for four runs in seven innings, then salted the game away against Addie Joss.

The Franklins were just as dominant in the second game -- until the eighth inning. Lefty Grove carried a 7-1 lead into that frame, scattering eight hits in seven innings. Meanwhile, the Franklins racked Pete Alexander for five runs in the first three innings and greeted Iron Man McGinnity with two more tallies in the sixth. Babe Ruth homered and scored three runs; Lou Gehrig had three RBIs.

But everything changed in the bottom of the eighth. The first five men to face Grove singled. With six left-handed hitters due up, the Franklins bypassed closer Dizzy Dean for lefty Herb Pennock, and the curveball specialist continued to flounder. He faced six men, three of whom reached and two of whom scored.

The seven-run outburst gave the Teddys the lead, and Chief Bender made it stand up. The Teddys bullpen (McGinnity, Eppa Rixey and Bender) retired the last 10 Franklins to bat.

George Sisler had two doubles and two runs scored in as many at-bats. No Teddy had more than one RBI.

The third game pitted legendary Giants screwballers Carl Hubbell and Christy Mathewson. The Teddys put up three runs in the first and held a 4-0 lead into the fourth, when the Franklins scored five runs. The inning was highlighted by Gabby Hartnett's two-run double and Pie Traynor's two-run triple.

But Matty gave up just one hit in the next four innings, and the Teddys chipped away at Hubbell for single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.

The Teddys turned to Rixey in the ninth, but after he retired Gehrig to start the inning, Arky Vaughn and Hartnett singled. Bender relieved and got a double play out of Traynor to end it.

Only Willie Wells' eighth-inning homer in the second game kept lowly Hilldale from being shut out in both games.

Smokey Joe Williams pitched well in the opener, but not as well as Carl Hubbell. Williams, supported by five double play grounders (three off the bat of Bill Dickey) allowed just seven hits, but one was a solo shot by Arky Vaughn and another a two-run dinger by Babe Ruth. Hubbell, meanwhile, scattered five harmless singles while walking just one.

Bob Feller had his stuff in the nightcap, striking out 10 in eight innings of work. He got early support from Joe Cronin and Ruth, who each hit two-run homers off Nip Winters (Cronin in the second, Ruth in the third). Pie Traynor also had a pair of RBIs.

Ruth has now homered in three consecutive games.

This series figured to be a slugfest, and it largely lived up to its billing.

Ray Brown entered Game One with an ERA of 11.13 for Homestead, gave up 10 runs in eight innings, and had his ERA rise to 11.15. And, had reliever Harry Salmon not given up a homer to Lou Gehrig, Brown would have gotten a no-decision.

The Franklins scored two runs apiece in the second, fourth and fifth innings and held a 10-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth. But reliever Waite Hoyt faced seven men in the eighth and got just one out. Dizzy Dean had to coax a double-play ball from Tubby Scales to keep the score at 10-8.

Gehrig's blast widened the margin to three, but with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Jud Wilson singled, Mule Suttles homered and Hurley McNair tripled to make it 11-10 with the tying run on third before Heavy Johnson flew out to right field.

Dazzy Vance allowed eight hits in seven innings,walking one and striking out five. Ray Brown allowed 14 hits and two walks.

Lefty Grove held the potent Homesteaders in check in the finale, scattering eight hits. Max Manning, who had allowed 11 earned runs total on the season, was battered for four runs before getting an out and eight runs in the first two innings. Rogers Hornsby homered in his first three at-bats, and Mel Ott was 5-for-6 with a homer and two doubles.

Of the nine men in the Franklin lineup, only Gehrig and Grove went hitless; the other seven all had at least two hits.

For the series, Hornsby was 5-for-10 with the three homers and nine RBIs. Ott was 7-for-10 with five runs scored.

The X-Giants took sizable leads in both games, but only got one win out of it.

Carl Hubbell yielded five runs in the first two innings of the opener as the X-Giants peppered him for nine hits in the two frames. But the screwball specialist choked off all subsequent attempted rallies and went the distance for his sixth win.

Joe DiMaggio hit a three-run homer in the third off Rube Foster; Foster had retired the first two batters but then gave up four runs. DiMaggio added a two-run single in the fourth to put the Franklins ahead to stay.

John Donaldson sparkled in the second game, shutting the potent Franklins down for seven innings, by which time the X-Giants had put up four runs against Bob Feller. The Franklins did rise up for three runs in the eighth, but Hilton Smith tossed a perfect ninth to finish things.

The previously hapless Garfields have now won four of five after stinging the Franklins, who entered the series sporting the league's best record.

Aggressive use of personnel marked the Garfields' opening win. Pud Galvin was pinch-hit for in the bottom of the fourth inning. That situation came to naught, but the Garfields racked up seven runs in the next two frames, with Roger Connor and Sam Thompson each driving home a pair of runs.

Old Hoss Radbourne got the win with three innings of one-run relief.

Tim Keefe and Lefty Grove dueled in the second game, with Grove holding the better of it into the bottom of the sixth. But the Garfields tied the score at three in that frame, then broke through with three runs in the seventh and another in the eighth.

Amos Rusie staggered to a two-inning save, allowing three runs in the ninth.

The Franklins ran their winning streak to nine before losing a Home Run Derby of a finale (11 dingers)— but the streak ended hard, as the Franklins scored six times in the top of the ninth before falling a run short.

The first game was a taut pitchers duel, with Lefty Grove outlasting Whitey Ford. Eddie Mathews put the Ikes up 2-0 with a homer in the fourth, but the Franklins scored on sac flies in the fifth and sixth to knot it up. A two-single in the ninth by Paul Waner, making his first start of the season, put the Franklins up for the first time, and Dizzy Dean survived a leadoff hit and and an error to put the Ikes away.

The top of the order powered the Franklins in the second game. Babe Ruth homered twice, doubled and drew two walks; he scored three runs and drove in three. Joe DiMaggio and Mel Ott also scored twice. Carl Hubbell got three double plays and went the distance for his fifth win.

Gme Thre was a slugfest. Early Wynn picked up the win by minimizing the damage for eight innings; the Franklins scored in six of the innings, but never more than one. Bob Feller allowed no earned runs through the first five innings, but he did give up a three-run homer to Duke Snide after a Pie Traynor error, and he allowed four more homers in the sixth and seventh innings.

Stan Covaleski allowed another four runs in the eighth, with put the Ikes up 13-6. But Hal Newhouser walked six and allowed three hits; he left with the bases loaded, six runs in and two outs. Bill Dickey, who had homered earlier in the inning, popped up to end it.

Wynn and Newhouser walked 12 men. Ernie baks was 4-for-4 with two homers and a double, three runs and two RBIS; Willie Mays drove home four with his two homers (his first two of season), and Ted Williams had a three-run shot off Covaleski. Lou Gehrig and Dickey had three RBIs each for the Ikes.

For the series, Banks was 7-for-12; Ruth was 3-for-6 with seven walks and six runs scored.

A close series on the scoreboard turned into a rout in the standings.

Carl Hubbell yielded three runs in the first inning but only one thereafter in the opener for the Franklins. Warren Spahn had a disastrous third inning: Three triples, a homer and a pair of walks added up to five runs.

Lou Gerhig's three-bagger came with the bases loaded and was followed by Gabby Hartnett's homer. Stan Musial hit a pair of triples himself for the Ikes.

The second game turned on a crucial error by Eddie Mathews in the third. That loaded the bases and kept the inning alive for Gehrig's grand slam. The Ikes got two-run homers from Musial and Yogi Berra, but the Franklins tacked on three more runs in the seventh and eighth, including a fifth unearned run.

Bob Feller fanned eight in seven innings of work.

Bob Lemon turned in eight innings of scoreless relief in the third game after Robin Roberts injured himself in the first inning. Combined with two innings in the first game, that gave Lemon 10 scoreless innings in the series -- impressive enough against the Franklins' imposing lineup, but especially so considering he entered with a 10.28 ERA. He left with a 4.24 ERA.

Musial hit a game-tying homer in the eighth and a go-ahead two-run shot in the 10th, but Hoyt Wilhelm blew a save for the first time, giving up back-to-back homers to Babe Ruth and Rogers Hornsby to open the bottom of 10th.

Dazzy Vance fanned 10 in 9.3 innings. Waite Hoyt wriggled out of a 12th inning jam to set up the winning rally off Hal Newhouser.

For the series, Musial was 7-for-14 with three homers and two triples, five runs and six RBIs. Gehrig was just 2-for-13 but drove home seven runs.

Mel Ott emerged from his season-long power drought to bop three homers in the two-game series, and he hit them when they mattered most.

In the third inning of the series opener, the Franklins right fielder/leadoff man hit a solo shot to tie the game at 2. He hit another in bottom of the ninth with a man on to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 win. And in the nightcap, Ott's two-run homer in the fourth opened a 5-2 lead and finished the scoring.

Waite Hoyt got the W in the first game with two innings of perfect relief. Bullet Joe Rogan went the distance for the Crawfords, whose bullpen (which has included Rogan) has blown several leads already this season. This time the bullpen stayed out of it, and the starter coughed up the lead.

Paul Waner pinch hit for Franklins starter Dazzy Vance in the seventh, singled and scored. He remained in the game in a double switch with Babe Ruth, and set up Ott's game winner with another single.

Lefty Grove shone bright in the finale, allowing just three singles (all in the third inning). He walked two and struck out five. He also had a hit, a walk and two sacrifice bunts at the plate.
