Homestead was eliminated from the Division B race, clinching the crown for the Crawfords.

John Donaldson frustrated Homestead's potent lineup in the opener. He allowed six hit and six walks, but Homestead banged into a pair of double plays and never came up with a big hit.

Not that one more hit would have sufficed. The X-Giants tormented Dave Brown with three successful squeeze bunts(by Pop Lloyd, Pete Hill and Donaldson) in the first two innings and turned a Dobie Moore error in the sixth inning into three unearned runs.

On the verge of elimination, Homestead fought back from a 4-1 deficit in the second game to win 5-4 in 10 innings. Solo homers by Mule Suttles and Josh Gibson off Martin Dihigo helped knot the score, and Chino Smith's solo shot in the 10th won it. Leroy Matlock entered with the tying run in scoring position to get three straight outs for the save.

Homestead jumped on Slim Jones for four runs in the first inning of the finale, highlighted by a three-run Gibson homer. Cool Papa Bell got an inside-the-parker in the third, but Homestead made it 5-2 with a Smith triple and Gibson sac fly in the fifth.

But Max Manning tired in the eighth, and Henry Salmon couldn't stop the X-Giants merry-go-round. The big hits came from notably weak bats: Bruce Petway doubled home the go-ahead run, and Bingo DeMoss followed with a two-run single to give Hilton Smith plenty of margin.

Bill Monroe was six-for-13 in the series with four runs and four RBIs for the X-Giants.

The Franklins kept the heat on their pursuers with the sweep of the flailing X-Giants.

The  Division A leaders rang up seven runs in the first inning of the opener, with Mel Ott contributing a double and a triple. He scored one run in the inning and drove in three.

Dazzy Vance went the distance, allowing three runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out eight. Double Duty Radcliffe went six innings of two-run relief for the X-Giants; the Franklins stranded 11 men against the scuffballer.

The second game was much closer. Rube Foster, who entered with a 7.38 ERA, held the powerful Franklins in check, allowing just one earned run in seven innings. But Lefty Grove allowed just three hits in his seven innings, and the score was tied at one when Pop Lloyd's two-out, two-base error allowed two runs to score.

Grove had to leave after a minor batting injury, and the X-Giants picked up a run in the eighth against Waite Hoyt, but Dizzy Dean locked down the ninth.

Babe Ruth was 5-for-8 in the series with three doubles and a home run. Ott was 5-for-10 with two triples and a double.

Series 16: Crawfords take two of three from X-Giants

The Crawfords reduced their magic number in the Division B race to four by taking two close games from the X-Giants. The X-Giants, for their part, may well have both the player and the pitcher of Series 16.

The X-Giants kick-started the opener with a three-run homer from Ben Taylor, and John Donaldson held the Crawfords hitless through four innings. But Chet Brewer retired 16 straight X-Giants (second through seventh innings) and the Crawfords picked up one run in the fifth and two more to tie it in the sixth, before getting a back-breaking grand slam from John Beckwith in the eighth. Taylor's second homer of the game did little for the X-Giants.

Beckwith had five RBIs, Taylor four. Both Brewer and Donaldson went the distance, Brewer allowing just five hits without a strikeout..

The offenses in the middle game were nothing but solo home runs -- three of them for the Crawfords, two of them (Bill Wright and Louis Santop) back-to-back shots in the second inning.

Bill Foster held the X-Giants without a baserunner until Bill Monroe homered with one out in the sixth. Foster finished with a four-hitter, striking out eight with one walk. Martin Dihigo allowed 10 hits ins seven innings for the loss. Beckwith was 3-for-4 with a homer; Ray Dandridge was 3-for-3

The X-Giants took out a lot of frustration against Ted Trent in the finale. They pummeled the righty for four runs in the first inning, six runs in the fifth (including a three-run homer from pitcher Slim Jones) and three more in the sixth. Then they roughed up reliever Leon Day for three runs in three mop-up frames.

Jones was superb for the X-Giants, a four-hit shutout with seven Ks. He retired the first 10 Crawfords.

Ben Taylor was 5-for-5 with three triples and a homer. He drove in eight runs and scored three. For the series, the X-Giants first baseman was 7-for-13 with three homers (his first three of the season), three triples, five runs scored and 12 RBIs.

The Obamas kept themselves in the hunt in Division A, while the X-Giants are fading out of the Division B race.

Jose Mendez was hit for two crooked numbers in his brief (3.6 innings) start in the opener, allowing four runs in the first and five more in the fourth. The 10 runs Mendez allowed were too much for the X-Giants to overcome, even with Double Duty Radcliffe tossing 4.2 perfect innings of relief.

Just two of the six runs scored off Nolan Ryan in eight innings were earned.

Rube Foster did well in the nightcap, even though he was out pitched for seven innings by Kid Nichols. The Obamas held a 4-1 lead going into the eighth, but the X-Giants had a run in and the bases loaded with two outs when Ed Walsh relieved.  He was greeted by Rap Dixon's bases clearing double,  which gave the X-Giants a 5-4 lead.

But Tony Lazzeri, filling in for the dinged-up Lou Boudreau at short for the Obamas, singled home Mickey Cochrane to tie the score in the bottom of the eighth, and after Walsh shut down the X-Giants in the ninth, Jimmy Foxx led off with a walk-off homer off Webster McDonald.

Foxx was 5-for 9 in the series with three RBIs, three runs, a homer and two doubles. Dixon was 3-for-7 with six RBIs and two doubles.

Series 14: Garfields take two of three from X-Giants

The X-Giants scored the most runs in the series, but the Garfields won the most games.

John Donaldson took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth in the opener, but George Davis singled home the tying run with two outs. Jose Mendez, making a surprise relief appearance in the 10th, surrendered a single to King Kelly, stole second and advanced on a pair of fly balls.

Pivotal to the outcome was a two-base error by Rap Dixon in the second inning, the two-out muff was followed by a two-run single by Hugh Duffy.

Donaldson allowed just five hits in the no-decision.

The high-scoring second game turned on a two-out rally in the ninth against Hilton Smith. The X-Giants closer retired the first two batters, but then came single, single, double and single to knot the score at 9. The winning run in the 11th scored on another error by Dixon.

Dixon did help the cause with a 5-for-6 performance at the plate, including a double and a home run.

He swung the big bat for the X-Giants in the finale. His three-run double in the sixth off Mickey Welch gave Slim Jones the runs he needed. Jones, like Donaldson, went nine innings and allowed just five hits.

The Teddys kept pace with the Obamas and the Franklins in the battle in Division A, while the X-Giants slipped below .500.

The X-Giants took a 5-4 lead into the ninth inning of the opener, but Hilton Smith allowed his first runs of the season. Pinch-hitter Joe Jackson and Ty Cobb rapped back-to-back triples, and Eddie Collins singled home Cobb for the go-ahead run. Chief Bender made it stand up.

Cobb was 5-for-5 with a double. Martin Dihigo drove in four runs for the X-Giants.

Rube Waddell was sensational in the second game, limiting the X-Giants to two singles and two walks. He struck out seven. Rube Foster had his best start of the season for the X-Giants, but a costly error by Ben Taylor resulted in four unearned tallies in the fifth inning.

Tris Speaker was 4-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs.

Series 12: Obamas sweep X-Giants

The Obamas had to come from behind twice in the late innings to get the two-game sweep.

In the first game, Martin Dihigo held the Obamas hitless through five innings, but Eddie Plank matched him scoreless inning for scoreless inning until the sixth, when Double Duty Radcliffe singled home Rap Dixon. The Obamas tied it in the eighth after Dihigo walked the first two hitters, and Mickey Mantle put the Obamas ahead in the ninth with a leadoff homer.

Plank and Ed Walsh combined to allow seven hits, three more than Dihigo allowed.

The X-Giants took advantage of a rare error by Charlie Gehringer in the first inning to put up three unearned runs against Walter Johnson, but they could do nothing more against the Big Train. The Obamas picked up an unearned run of their own in the fourth against Slim Jones and tied it with two runs in the eighth.

The bullpens -- Vic Willis and Lefty Gomez for the Obamas, Webster McDonald for the X-Giants -- put up zeros into the 12th inning, when the Obamas scored another unearned run. The winning tally scored on a wild pitch.

The normally outstanding X-Giant defense was charged with four errors in the second game. The X-Giants left runners on third base in the 11th and 12th innings.

The X-Giants took sizable leads in both games, but only got one win out of it.

Carl Hubbell yielded five runs in the first two innings of the opener as the X-Giants peppered him for nine hits in the two frames. But the screwball specialist choked off all subsequent attempted rallies and went the distance for his sixth win.

Joe DiMaggio hit a three-run homer in the third off Rube Foster; Foster had retired the first two batters but then gave up four runs. DiMaggio added a two-run single in the fourth to put the Franklins ahead to stay.

John Donaldson sparkled in the second game, shutting the potent Franklins down for seven innings, by which time the X-Giants had put up four runs against Bob Feller. The Franklins did rise up for three runs in the eighth, but Hilton Smith tossed a perfect ninth to finish things.

Slim Jones ran his record to 4-0 with a complete game five-hitter in the opener,blemished only by a pair of homer runs by Ernie Banks.

The X-Giants scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a scoreless tie. It might have been an even bigger inning, but Willie Mays threw out Ben Taylor trying to score and Ted Williams threw out Pop Lloyd at third on Lloyd's two-run double.

The Ike hammered four homers in the second game to the X-Giants' one, but a six-run outburst chased Whitey Ford in the fifth inning. The Ikes made the game close by scoring three times off Double Duty Radcliffe in the eighth and ninth innings before Hilton Smith came in to get Banks for the final out with a man on.

Bill Monroe had three RBIs in the second game, and Mays drove in three with his two homers.

Three one-side games featured three complete game victories and three contenders for pitcher of the series honors.

Bill Byrd tossed a six-hitter for Hilldale in the opener, allowing one earned run (on a Martin Dihigo homer). Rube Foster was torched for seven runs in the fourth inning and nine all told. The biggest blows were a pair of two-run doubles from Turkey Stearnes and Judy Johnson.

Cannonball Redding wasn't awful in the second game, but he was not match for John Donaldson. Redding. Two of the six runs Redding allowed were unearned. But Donaldson was brilliant, allowing just three hits (one a Stearnes homer), walking one and fanning five. Dihigo had three RBIs for the X-Giants, two on his second homer of the series.

Dihigo didn't go deep in the finale at the plate, but he pitched a nine-hit shutout -- and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and a walk. Biz Mackey hit a pair of homers, a triple and a single in five at-bats, driving in four runs.

Smokey Joe Williams matched Dihigo shutout frame for shutout frame through five innings, but Mackey homered in the sixth, Rap Dixon hit a three-run shot in the four-run seventh and Mackey abused reliever Eggie Hensley with a three-run bomb in the ninth to turn it into a rout.

Mackey was 6-for-12 in the series with two homers, a triple, three runs and five RBIs.

Series 8: X-Giants take two of three from Hilldale

Hilldale 6-13, X-Giants 10-10

Pitching and missed opportunities abounded in this series.

Cannonball Dick Redding, mired in a pitching slump previously, allowed just two hits for Hilldale in the opener. Martin Dihigo allowed nine, two of them to Redding, who scored one of Hilldales' two runs.

The X-Giants put up the one crooked number of the series in the fifth inning of the second game, scoring four times against Smokey Joe Williams out of four singles, a walk, a steal and a sac fly. Slim Jones allowed just four hits, but the last was a two-run pinch-hit homer by Tank Carr in the eighth.

The nightcap went 12 innings, with the X-Giants' Jose Mendez and Double Duty Radcliffe littering the scorecard with stranded runners. Twice Mendez wiggled out of jams when first baseman Ben Taylor nailed runners at the plate. Hilldale led off consecutive innings (the seventh and eighth) with triples and failed to score. Radcliffe ended four of his five innings with a man in scoring position.

Rap Dixon hit a game-tying homer in the seventh and singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 12th. Dihigo had a crucial pinch-hit single in the ninth to keep the game alive for the X-Giants.

Ben Taylor was 7-for-12 for the series.

Two very different games with very similar endings — walk-off homers from the Big Red Machine.

The Kennedys jumped out in front in the opener with a seven-run first inning. Rube Foster faced nine men and got none of them out.

Double Duty Radcliffe, who had started behind the plate, relieved Foster with six innings of one-run ball, during which time the X-Giants had a six-running inning of their own off Juan Marichal. Three of those runs were unearned, as George Brett and Robin Yount committed consecutive errors. (Each would have another boot later in the game, but neither resulted in any damage).

The X-Giants tied the game with two runs in the top of the eighth. Martin Dihigo and Sandy Koufax match each other with a shutout inning of relief, but in the bottom of the ninth Joe Morgan took Dihigo deep to end it.

The X-Giants opened the second game with a single by Cool Papa Bell and a homer by Pete Hill. But Tom Seaver shut them down the rest of the way, allowing just six hits for the game. Seaver walked none, struck out four and retired the final 10 men he faced.

John Donaldson looked like he could make those two early runs stand up. Luis Aparicio singled home Robin Yount for a run in the fifth, and Donaldson worked around a Henry Aaron triple in the sixth. But Harmon Killebrew led off the ninth with a double, Brett moved pinch-runner Reggie Jackson to third, and Johnny Bench followed with a home run.

Donaldson allowed six hits, walked four (three of them Killebrew) and fanned five.

Series 6: X-Giants sweep Ikes

X-Giants 8-7, Ikes 6-8

The breaks went against the Ikes in the ninth innings.

Slim Jones had the Ikes baffled for eight no-hit innings in the first game, but the Ikes opened the ninth with three straight hits — single by pinch-hitter Enos Slaughter, double by Willie Mays, RBI single from Stan Musial — to pull within a run with the tying run on third.

Jones exited, Hilton Smith entered — and the Ikes didn't get a ball out of the infield.

Warren Spahn pitched well himself, allowing just seven hits in going the distance.

Early Wynn seemed intent on returning the favor in the second game. After Musial tripled in two runs in the first inning, Wynn allowed just four hits through eight innings and held a 3-1 lead going into the ninth.

But with one out in the ninth, Pop Lloyd singled, Martin Dihigo homered to tie the game, and Rap Dixon followed with his second homer of the contest.

Tom Williams, who relieved Jose Mendez to start the eighth, retired all six men he faced for the victory.

Dixon was 4-for-7 with a walk and two homers in the series.
