It didn't come easy, but the Crawfords wrapped up the Division B title despite dropping their final regular season series.

The first two games at cellar-dwelling Hilldale each went 11 innings. Turkey Stearnes was crucial for Hilldale; his seventh-inning triple was pivotal in a two-run inning, and he hit the walkoff homer in the 11th off Roosevelt Davis. The Crawfords got two runs and two RBIs from Oscar Charleston.

Charleston was big in the second game as well; he had the game-winning homer in the 11th and added a pair of doubles. Louis Santop homered twice. Sam Streeter blew the save for Bullet Joe Rogan in the 10th but wound up with the vultured victory.

Bill Byrd went the distance in the finale for Hilldale, holding the Crawfords to six hits, none of them in the final four innings. Hilldale broke open a close game with three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

Charleston was eight-for-13 with three homers, three doubles, two walks, five runs and five RBIs. Stearnes was 6-for-13 with five runs and four RBIs and 13 total bases.

Hilldale got one of the season's best pitching performances in Game One, as Nip Winters spun a nifty two-hitter and faced just one man over the minimum.

Both Garfield hits came off the bat of King Kelly. Winters walked none and fanned only one, but just four outs went to the outfielders.

Hilldale pieced together a pair of two-run rallies off Tim Keefe, one in the second inning and the other in the ninth to give Winters a bit more breathing room

The Garfields jumped on Bill Byrd for two runs in the first inning of the second game, but Hilldale put up three of its own in the second against Cy Young, highlighted by Byrd's two-run single. Hilldale added solo runs in the third and fourth.

Andy Cooper got the last two outs with the tying run in scoring position.

Mickey Welch was solid in the finale for the Garfields, scattering nine hits over eight innings but allowing just one run, on a homer by Willie Wells in the sixth. A Judy Johnson error in the first inning opened the door for two unearned runs off Cannonball Dick Redding; Redding went six innings, allowing just one earned run.

Cannonball Redding outdueled Warren Spahn in the opener of this series between two also-rans. Newt Allen hit his first home of the season to lead off the ninth and break a 1-1 tie.

Redding allowed four hits and three walks in eight innings. Spahn allowed seven hits and eight walks in 8.3 innings. He walked home a run in the first inning.

Ted Williams dominated the second and final game of the two-game set. He hit a pair of homers, singled and walked, drove home four runs and scored two.

Early Wynn left after six innings of five-run ball, but with a 6-5 lead. Hal Newhouser (ERA 12.65) relieved with two shutout frames, and Hoyt Wilhelm wrapped it up in the ninth

Hilldale's season has long since been a shambles, but they're doing a pretty good job of playing spoiler. They took two of three from Homestead in the previous series, and here dented the Teddys.

Nip Winters won perhaps the most impressive pitchers duel of the season to date in the opener. He and Rube Waddell each allowed solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings, then matched zeros into the 12th. Winters retired 20 straight batters after Ty Cobb's game-tying double in the fifth. Waddell, victimized by a run-scoring throwing error by Home Run Baker, had only one 1-2-3 inning in that period but matched Winters zero for zero.

Hilldale loaded the bases in the 12th, and Newt Allen singled home two men with two outs to put them in front. Andy Cooper allowed a hit in the bottom of the inning but no runs. Judy Johnson was 4-for-6 with two runs.

Three Finger Brown allowed five hits and no runs in eight innings of the finale, while the Teddys ground out six runs off Bill Byrd, four of them in the seventh and eighth innings. Tris Speaker was 3-for-4 with two RBIs (5-for-9 in the series with a triple). Iron Man McGinnity mopped up, allowing two runs.

Lowly Hilldale dealt Homestead a potentially crippling blow in the tight Division B race.

The first game of the series was an unlikely pitchers duel. Bill Byrd entered the game with an ERA of 6.18; Ray Brown's was 11.15. Yet the two right-handers each went the distance. Byrd was helped by two baserunner kills at home by centerfielder Turkey Stearnes; Willard Brown also threw out a runner at the plate to help Ray Brown.

Hilldale plated the winning run on three straight hits to open the ninth off Ray Brown.

Homestead's often shaky defense and shallow bullpen handed the second game to Hilldale. Hilldale plated three unearned runs off losing pitcher Max Manning, and reliever William Bell surrendered another three in the final two frames.

Homestead's vaunted lineup rose up late in the finale to turn a fairly close game into a rout late. Homestead scored four runs off Smokey Joe Williams in the first two innings, but Williams held them to one run in the next five frames. Meanwhile, Buck Leonard's homer in the fifth narrowed the margin.

But Homestead pummeled Piggy Powell for seven runs in the top of the ninth, highlighted by Mule Suttles's grand slam. It was icing on the cake; Satchel Paige got 13 outs from 13 batters immediately after Leonard's homer before allowing a meaningless solo shot to Quincy Trouppe with two outs in the ninth.

Only Willie Wells' eighth-inning homer in the second game kept lowly Hilldale from being shut out in both games.

Smokey Joe Williams pitched well in the opener, but not as well as Carl Hubbell. Williams, supported by five double play grounders (three off the bat of Bill Dickey) allowed just seven hits, but one was a solo shot by Arky Vaughn and another a two-run dinger by Babe Ruth. Hubbell, meanwhile, scattered five harmless singles while walking just one.

Bob Feller had his stuff in the nightcap, striking out 10 in eight innings of work. He got early support from Joe Cronin and Ruth, who each hit two-run homers off Nip Winters (Cronin in the second, Ruth in the third). Pie Traynor also had a pair of RBIs.

Ruth has now homered in three consecutive games.

Two games, two blowouts, two compete games.

Three Finger Brown allowed three runs in the first five innings but only two baserunners (no hits) in his final four innings of work. The game was tied at three through six innings, but the Teddys roughed up Bill Byrd for four runs in the seventh and tagged Dizzy Dismukes for three more in the ninth. Roger Bresnahan hit a leadoff homer in the seventh, and Sam Crawford had a three-run shot in the ninth.

Hilldale pieced together three runs in the first inning of the second game and added solo runs in the second and third innings. Hilldale pounded Joe McGinnity for seven runs in the seventh and eight innings to make things easy for Dick Redding in the late goings.

Buck Leonard hit three homers in the two games; he was 4-for-8 with seven RBIs, four runs, 14 total bases and a walk.

Hilldale broke a six-game losing streak with a comeback win the finale, but remains in the cellar of Division B.

Cy Young outdueled Cannonball Dick Redding in a dandy pitching duel in the opener. Sam Thompson took advantage of a Willie Wells error to hit a two-run homer; that was enough of Young.

Young went the distance, scattering two hits and five walks to stake an early claim of pitcher of the series honors. Redding wasn't much worse, allowing six hits and two walks.

The second game turned on another Hilldale error, this one by Turkey Stearnes. His first-inning boot set up a four-run (all unearned) outburst that gave Mickey Welch plenty of cushion.

Smokey Joe Williams allowed five runs in eight innings, but only one was earned. The Garfields stole four bases off him, two of them in the four-run first. Welch scattered seven hits and walked none.

The Garfields had a 5-2 lead in the fourth inning of the finale, but Hilldale chipped away and tied it in the eighth at five. Thompson homered in top of the tenth to put the Garfields on the verge of a sweep, but with two outs in the tenth, John Clarkson hit Wells with a pitch, walked Newt Allen and allowed a game-ending triple to Judy Johnson.

For the series, Thompson was 7-for-13 with two homers, a double, a walk, a steal, five runs and three RBIs.

Series 10: Kennedys sweep Hilldale

The Kennedys climbed back over the .500 mark and knocked Hilldale into the cellar of Division B in the process.

Steve Carlton dominated Game One, allowing just two hits in eight innings and retiring 12 of the first 13 men he faced. Rollie Fingers worked the ninth and allowed a pair of solo shots.

George Brett hit a pair of homers, good for four runs. Hank Aaron drove in two more for the Kennedys.

Bob Gibson earned his fifth win in the second game, falling one out shy of a complete game. Brett hit another homer and drove in three more runs. Bill Byrd went the distance for Hilldale; four of the runs off him were unearned.

Brett was 5-for-9 the series with three homers, seven RBIs and four runs scored.

George Brett had a big series for the Kennedys, with three home runs and seven RBIs.

Three one-side games featured three complete game victories and three contenders for pitcher of the series honors.

Bill Byrd tossed a six-hitter for Hilldale in the opener, allowing one earned run (on a Martin Dihigo homer). Rube Foster was torched for seven runs in the fourth inning and nine all told. The biggest blows were a pair of two-run doubles from Turkey Stearnes and Judy Johnson.

Cannonball Redding wasn't awful in the second game, but he was not match for John Donaldson. Redding. Two of the six runs Redding allowed were unearned. But Donaldson was brilliant, allowing just three hits (one a Stearnes homer), walking one and fanning five. Dihigo had three RBIs for the X-Giants, two on his second homer of the series.

Dihigo didn't go deep in the finale at the plate, but he pitched a nine-hit shutout -- and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and a walk. Biz Mackey hit a pair of homers, a triple and a single in five at-bats, driving in four runs.

Smokey Joe Williams matched Dihigo shutout frame for shutout frame through five innings, but Mackey homered in the sixth, Rap Dixon hit a three-run shot in the four-run seventh and Mackey abused reliever Eggie Hensley with a three-run bomb in the ninth to turn it into a rout.

Mackey was 6-for-12 in the series with two homers, a triple, three runs and five RBIs.

Pitching and missed opportunities abounded in this series.

Cannonball Dick Redding, mired in a pitching slump previously, allowed just two hits for Hilldale in the opener. Martin Dihigo allowed nine, two of them to Redding, who scored one of Hilldales' two runs.

The X-Giants put up the one crooked number of the series in the fifth inning of the second game, scoring four times against Smokey Joe Williams out of four singles, a walk, a steal and a sac fly. Slim Jones allowed just four hits, but the last was a two-run pinch-hit homer by Tank Carr in the eighth.

The nightcap went 12 innings, with the X-Giants' Jose Mendez and Double Duty Radcliffe littering the scorecard with stranded runners. Twice Mendez wiggled out of jams when first baseman Ben Taylor nailed runners at the plate. Hilldale led off consecutive innings (the seventh and eighth) with triples and failed to score. Radcliffe ended four of his five innings with a man in scoring position.

Rap Dixon hit a game-tying homer in the seventh and singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 12th. Dihigo had a crucial pinch-hit single in the ninth to keep the game alive for the X-Giants.

Ben Taylor was 7-for-12 for the series.

Lowly Hilldale snapped a five-game losing streak in the finale, but even what had been a cozy 6-0 lead turned into a nail-biter.

Hilldale had Eddie Plank on the ropes all game, scoring a run in the third, three in the fifth and another in the sixth. Plank left with the bases loaded, a run in and nobody out, but Jack Chesbro induced a 5-2-3 double play from Willie Wells before popping up Judy Johnson.

But Bill Byrd had the Obamas flat-footed at the plate — at one point the righty, who entered the game 0-3 with an ERA of 8.46, retired 14 in a row — and Chesbro wild-pitched a run home in the eighth inning, making the score 6-0.

But the Obamas struck for three runs in the eighth, all coming with two out. Mike Schmidt led off the ninth with a homer off Byrd, who got the next two outs before hitting Tony Lazzeri with a pitch. That brought in closer Andy Cooper, who allowed a walk and a run-scoring single to pinch-hitter Ernie Lombardi before popping up Jimmy Foxx to end it.

There was nowhere near as much drama in the first game. The Obamas scored three runs in the first two innings — a two-single from Frank Robinson and a solo homer from Lombardi — and Kid Nichols did the rest.

Nichols allowed just five hits (one a homer by Quincy Trouppe) and four walks while striking out three in the complete-game win.

The first eight Kennedys to bat in the opener scored in an 11-run frame against Cannonball Redding, whose ERA rose to an ugly 11.14 in 21 innings.

Willie McCovey drove in five runs in the frame with a homer and single. He added another RBI in the seventh. Joe Morgan was 2-for-3 with three walks and four runs scored. Reggie Jackson went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs.

Dizzy Dismukes pitched well for three innings of relief but took a pounding in an additional two innings to preserve his bullpen mates.

Steve Carlton, meanwhile, was sharp, throwing five no-hit innings and finishing with a four-hitter. He walked five and struck out five.

In the second game, Bob Gibson also threw five no-hit innings and allowed four hits, although he gave up a run in the third on a hit batter and three walks. Rollie Fingers finished for his third save.

Smokey Joe Williams held the Kennedys to just five hits, but three went for extra bases, and all three scored.
