The two teams combined for 22 home runs -- slightly more than seven per game -- in the season-ending series. Willie Mays hit five, three of them in the first game; Mickey Mantle went deep four times, twice in each of the last two games; Stan Musial homered in each game.

Amid all the long balls, Series 18 brought the demise of the Obamas' slim playoff ambitions.

The lowly Ikes put four runs on the board before Nolan Ryan could get an out in the opener; the outburst featured Mays' three-run homer. The Obamas made it 4-2 after six, but Mays hit another three-run shot, this off Jack Chesbro, in the seventh, and in the ninth Musial and Mays hit solo shots off Lefty Gomez. Mays had seven RBIs.

Early Wynn went the distance, giving up five runs on seven hits.

Neither starter in the second game was effective. Kid Nichols allowed five runs in the top of the first for the Obamas -- Musial and Duke Snider hit back-to-back shots to open the game -- but the Obamas tied it at five in the second.

Nichols departed after four innings down 7-6. Chesbro went four innings of one-run ball (a homer by Eddie Mathews), which gave his mates a chance to tie it against Ikes starter Robin Roberts. Mays homered off Vick Willis in the ninth to put the Ikes but 9-8, but Hal Newhouser gave up a walk, a double and a sac fly, and in the bottom of the 11th, Jimmie Foxx hit a walk-off bomb off Hoyt Wilhelm.

Obama starter Eddie Plank kept the streak of early crooked numbers going in the finale; Ted Williams and Mays hit back-to-back homers in the first. Whitey Ford was sharp for the Ikes, allowing just seven hits and two runs in 8.6 innings, striking out nine. Wilhelm entered with two out and the bases loaded in the ninth to get Jackie Robinson on a grounder  to end the game and the teams' seasons.

The Teddys took care of business and enter the final series of the schedule just a half game behind the Franklins in Division A.

They knocked Robin Roberts around early in the opener, tagging him for four runs in the first and a pair in each of the second and third innings. Three-Finger Brown was not as sharp as usual, but he was effective enough. Eppa Rixey got the last out with the bases loaded in the ninth inning.

The Ikes led the second game behind Whitey Ford all the way until the Teddys erupted for four runs in the seventh. Roger Bresnahan led off with a single, and Pete Alexander's bunt also went for a hit. Ty Cobb singled home Bresnahan to tie the game at 2. Alex was retired at the plate on Eddie Collins's grounder, but Honus Wagner walked to load the bases  and Tris Speaker singled home Cobb and Collins. Nap Lajoie's grounder plated Wagner, and the Teddys had enough runs to withstand Eddie Mathews' homer in the ninth off Chief Bender.

Christy Mathewson and Warren Spahn put on a good pitchers duel in the finale. Speaker's two-run homer in the fourth (it came with two outs) was the only scoring until after the Ikes pinch-hit for Spahn. The overworked Bob Lemon retired the first two Teddys in the eighth, but Hal Newhouser, brought in to dispose of the lefties at the top of the lineup, failed utterly; two walks and three singles brought in three runs. Mathews again homered in the ninth, too little too late.

Speaker was 6-for-11 in the series with seven RBIs, a home run and a double. Collins was 6-for-11 with four runs scored. Cobb and Lajoie each drove home four runs.

Series 16: Ikes, Hilldale split

Cannonball Redding outdueled Warren Spahn in the opener of this series between two also-rans. Newt Allen hit his first home of the season to lead off the ninth and break a 1-1 tie.

Redding allowed four hits and three walks in eight innings. Spahn allowed seven hits and eight walks in 8.3 innings. He walked home a run in the first inning.

Ted Williams dominated the second and final game of the two-game set. He hit a pair of homers, singled and walked, drove home four runs and scored two.

Early Wynn left after six innings of five-run ball, but with a 6-5 lead. Hal Newhouser (ERA 12.65) relieved with two shutout frames, and Hoyt Wilhelm wrapped it up in the ninth

It was a golden opportunity for the Crawfords to take firm control of the Division B race; Homestead had already been swept in Series 15, and they were playing the last-place team in Division A.  But the Ikes weren't an easy pair of Ws -- they weren't a pair of Ws of any sort.

Robin Roberts went the distance in Game One to get his first win of the season. Staked to an early 3-0 lead, the big righty scattered 11 hits, four of them consecutively in the sixth inning.

Stan Musial had a pair of doubles and two RBI for the Ikes.

The Ikes opened the second game with a three-run outburst against Bullet Joe Rogan, but Whitey Ford gave all three runs back in the third with a pair of gopher balls. The game remain tied into the sixth, when Eddie Mathews homered; the Ikes added two more in the seventh.

Meanwhile, Ford threw five hitless innings before allowing two baserunners to open the ninth. The Ikes bypassed closer Hoyt Wilhelm for Jim Bunning, and while Bunning did allow a run-scoring pinch-hit single to Louis Santop, he got a game-ending double play out of Alejandro Oms.

Musial was 4-for-8 in the series with two runs, two RBIs and two doubles.

Series 14: Kennedys sweep Ikes

Lots of runs for both teams, but more of them for the Kennedys.

The Ikes pummeled Bob Gibson for five runs (including a grand slam by Ernie Banks) in the very first inning of the series, but that was about as good as it got for the home team. George Brett's three-run homer in the sixth inning pulled the Kennedys to within 7-5.

In the eighth Ikes starter Whitey Ford loaded the bases with none out. Jim Bunning relieved and stuck out both Johnny Bench and Reggie Jackson. But pinch-hitter Carl Yastrzemski drew a walk to make it 7-6, and pinch-hitter Willie McCovey doubled for two more runs.

Sandy Koufax fanned five men in the eight and ninth innings for the Kennedys, but after Willie Mays beat out an infield single and Roy Campanella pinch hit for Yogi Berra, the Kennedys turned to Rollie Fingers to get the final out.

Such drama was lacking in the second game. The Kennedys racked Warren Spahn for five runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth to chase him. Carlton Fisk drove in four runs for the winners with a pair of doubles and a homer. Juan Marichal went the distance for the Kennedys, allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks.

The third game was a pitchers duel (Tom Seaver vs. Early Wynn) for six innings. The Kennedys trailed 2-0 after four but scored single runs in the fifth and sixth, with Seaver's homer starting things. Hank Aaron tripled home two runs in the seventh, and the Kennedys scored four home in the eighth, highlighted by Brett's bases-loaded triple.

But the Ikes struck back in their half of the eighth. Seaver walked four for the first five men he faced in the inning, then gave up a grand slam to Eddie Mathews. He left for Phil Niekro, who promptly allowed a solo shot to Berra, tying the score at eight.

But Hal Newhouser promptly gave up a three-run homer to Johnny Bench, and Niekro made the three-run lead stand up in the ninth.

Brett was 6-for-10 in the series with eight RBIs and three walks

Homestead entered the series just out of first place in Division B, and did what it needed to do to keep the heat on the Crawfords.

Back to back homers in the sixth inning from Josh Gibson and Jud Wilson put Homestead ahead in the first game, but the Ikes tied it at three on a Ted Williams homer. But Homestead pinned the loss on Early Wynn late with a two-run rally in the eighth that featured a triple by Mule Suttles and a double by Dobie Moore.

Satchel Paige went the distance (as did Wynn), allowing just six hits and one walk while striking out 10 -- but surrendered three solo homers.

Both lineups feasted on second-game starters Dave Brown and Robin Roberts. Roberts allowed at least one run in each of the first six innings but stopped the Homestead attack in the seventh and eighth innings. Brown opened the game with three shutout frames but allowed multiple runs in each of the next three innings.

But relievers Harry Salmon, Leroy Matlock and Bob Lemon took the game into the 11th inning before Lemon cracked (walk, single, single).

Stan Musial was 4-for-8 with two homers, two walks, a double, three runs and four RBIs. Josh Gibson also homered in each game and was 4-for-9. Suttles was 6-for-8.

The Ikes batted around in the third inning of the first game and drove Chet Brewer from the hill after four innings. Whitey Ford held the Crawfords in check for six innings, but was roughed up for four runs in the seventh, in part because of an error by Ernie Banks.

Still, the Ikes had a fairly comfortable win, powered by a pair of homers from Eddie Mathews and another from Red Schoendienst. The Ikes also had a pair of triples and three doubles.

The second game went the other way. Both Bill Foster and Warren Spahn were touched for three runs in the first inning. The Ikes added another tally in the second, but the Crawfords banged out another three runs in their half of the frame -- aided by another Banks boot -- and knocked Spahn out after the third inning.

Foster, meanwhile, settled in. The big southpaw allowed just three hits in the next six innings and got a pair of double plays to make it all the easier.

Mathews had three homers and six RBIs for the Ikes. Ray Dandridge went 7-for-9 for the Crawfords with three runs and two RBIs. Oscar Charleston was 6-for-9 with four RBIs, two runs, a homer and a pair of doubles.

The fast-sinking Ikes have now lost five in a row, while the Teddys are pushing toward the top of Division A.

The Ikes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first game against Pete Alexander, as Ernie Bakes drilled his 10th homer of the season in the second inning. Warren Spahn held that lead into the seventh, when Shoeless Joe Jackson tied it with a pinch-hit three-run homer.

Eppa Rixey faced just nine men in his three innings of relief, and the Teddys scored twice in the top of the ninth against Bob Lemon, with Honus Wagner contributing a two-run single.

The Teddys never trailed in Game Two, plating two runs in the first inning and three more (one unearned) in the third. Tris Speaker had four RBIs, and Eddie Collins was never retired (3-for-3 with two walks and a run scored.)

Christy Mathewson hit a rough patch in the fourth, when Ted Williams' homer highlighted a three-run rally, but Big Six steadied until the ninth, when the Ikes loaded the bases with no outs. Chief Bender entered and induced a double play grounder from Duke Snider to blunt the rally and then popped up Williams to end it.

Game Three was an affair of crooked numbers and zeros. Robin Roberts was tagged for four runs in the first and three more in the seventh, while Rube Waddell allowed three runs in the first himself (two unearned). Three of the four runs the Ikes scored came in on errors.

For the series, Ty Cobb was 8-for-15 with two doubles and two runs scored. Speaker had six RBIs. Collins was 6-for-11 with three runs.

Slim Jones ran his record to 4-0 with a complete game five-hitter in the opener,blemished only by a pair of homer runs by Ernie Banks.

The X-Giants scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a scoreless tie. It might have been an even bigger inning, but Willie Mays threw out Ben Taylor trying to score and Ted Williams threw out Pop Lloyd at third on Lloyd's two-run double.

The Ike hammered four homers in the second game to the X-Giants' one, but a six-run outburst chased Whitey Ford in the fifth inning. The Ikes made the game close by scoring three times off Double Duty Radcliffe in the eighth and ninth innings before Hilton Smith came in to get Banks for the final out with a man on.

Bill Monroe had three RBIs in the second game, and Mays drove in three with his two homers.

The Franklins ran their winning streak to nine before losing a Home Run Derby of a finale (11 dingers)— but the streak ended hard, as the Franklins scored six times in the top of the ninth before falling a run short.

The first game was a taut pitchers duel, with Lefty Grove outlasting Whitey Ford. Eddie Mathews put the Ikes up 2-0 with a homer in the fourth, but the Franklins scored on sac flies in the fifth and sixth to knot it up. A two-single in the ninth by Paul Waner, making his first start of the season, put the Franklins up for the first time, and Dizzy Dean survived a leadoff hit and and an error to put the Ikes away.

The top of the order powered the Franklins in the second game. Babe Ruth homered twice, doubled and drew two walks; he scored three runs and drove in three. Joe DiMaggio and Mel Ott also scored twice. Carl Hubbell got three double plays and went the distance for his fifth win.

Gme Thre was a slugfest. Early Wynn picked up the win by minimizing the damage for eight innings; the Franklins scored in six of the innings, but never more than one. Bob Feller allowed no earned runs through the first five innings, but he did give up a three-run homer to Duke Snide after a Pie Traynor error, and he allowed four more homers in the sixth and seventh innings.

Stan Covaleski allowed another four runs in the eighth, with put the Ikes up 13-6. But Hal Newhouser walked six and allowed three hits; he left with the bases loaded, six runs in and two outs. Bill Dickey, who had homered earlier in the inning, popped up to end it.

Wynn and Newhouser walked 12 men. Ernie baks was 4-for-4 with two homers and a double, three runs and two RBIS; Willie Mays drove home four with his two homers (his first two of season), and Ted Williams had a three-run shot off Covaleski. Lou Gehrig and Dickey had three RBIs each for the Ikes.

For the series, Banks was 7-for-12; Ruth was 3-for-6 with seven walks and six runs scored.

Series 8: Franklins sweep Ikes

A close series on the scoreboard turned into a rout in the standings.

Carl Hubbell yielded three runs in the first inning but only one thereafter in the opener for the Franklins. Warren Spahn had a disastrous third inning: Three triples, a homer and a pair of walks added up to five runs.

Lou Gerhig's three-bagger came with the bases loaded and was followed by Gabby Hartnett's homer. Stan Musial hit a pair of triples himself for the Ikes.

The second game turned on a crucial error by Eddie Mathews in the third. That loaded the bases and kept the inning alive for Gehrig's grand slam. The Ikes got two-run homers from Musial and Yogi Berra, but the Franklins tacked on three more runs in the seventh and eighth, including a fifth unearned run.

Bob Feller fanned eight in seven innings of work.

Bob Lemon turned in eight innings of scoreless relief in the third game after Robin Roberts injured himself in the first inning. Combined with two innings in the first game, that gave Lemon 10 scoreless innings in the series -- impressive enough against the Franklins' imposing lineup, but especially so considering he entered with a 10.28 ERA. He left with a 4.24 ERA.

Musial hit a game-tying homer in the eighth and a go-ahead two-run shot in the 10th, but Hoyt Wilhelm blew a save for the first time, giving up back-to-back homers to Babe Ruth and Rogers Hornsby to open the bottom of 10th.

Dazzy Vance fanned 10 in 9.3 innings. Waite Hoyt wriggled out of a 12th inning jam to set up the winning rally off Hal Newhouser.

For the series, Musial was 7-for-14 with three homers and two triples, five runs and six RBIs. Gehrig was just 2-for-13 but drove home seven runs.

The Garfields continue to struggle to score runs. Willie Mays appears to be past his struggles.

Pud Galvin and Robin Roberts matched each other for regulation distance — and beyond, in Roberts' case — before Eddie Mathews hit a two-run homer off John Clarkson in the bottom of the 11th.

It was Mathews's second home run of the game. He and Yogi Berra went back-to-back off Galvin in the second inning. Galvin allowed just three other hits and three walks.

For his part, Roberts allowed five hits in 10 innings before giving way to Bunning.

Bunning came through in relief in the second game as well, fanning Cap Anson with two on and two out in the eighth to preserve a 4-3 lead for Whitey Ford. Ford had allowed five hits and four walks, but five of those baserunners were bunched together in the Garfields' three-run fourth inning.

Tim Keefe held a 3-1 lead into the fifth, but Ernie Banks hit a solo homer to lead off the frame and Duke Snider hit a two-run dinger with two outs to provide the final margin. Keefe stranded runners in scoring position in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but Bunning negated the only threat the Garfields count mount.

Mays entered the series hitting .133 (8 for 60) but went five for eight in the series.

Series 6: X-Giants sweep Ikes

The breaks went against the Ikes in the ninth innings.

Slim Jones had the Ikes baffled for eight no-hit innings in the first game, but the Ikes opened the ninth with three straight hits — single by pinch-hitter Enos Slaughter, double by Willie Mays, RBI single from Stan Musial — to pull within a run with the tying run on third.

Jones exited, Hilton Smith entered — and the Ikes didn't get a ball out of the infield.

Warren Spahn pitched well himself, allowing just seven hits in going the distance.

Early Wynn seemed intent on returning the favor in the second game. After Musial tripled in two runs in the first inning, Wynn allowed just four hits through eight innings and held a 3-1 lead going into the ninth.

But with one out in the ninth, Pop Lloyd singled, Martin Dihigo homered to tie the game, and Rap Dixon followed with his second homer of the contest.

Tom Williams, who relieved Jose Mendez to start the eighth, retired all six men he faced for the victory.

Dixon was 4-for-7 with a walk and two homers in the series.
