Teddys win series four games to one

On the brink of elimination, the Crawfords took a 1-0 lead in the second and a 3-2 lead in the fourth. Leon Day had held the Teddys to three hits through six innings.
And then the Teddys did what they had done so often during the season: String base hits together.
Sam Crawford singled. Home Run Baker doubled. With the infield in, Day got Roger Bresnahan and pinch-hitter George Sisler on grounders. But then Ty Cobb singled home both runners, and the Teddys led 4-3.
Eppa Rixey threw a scoreless bottom of the seventh. Day got the first two men in the top of the eighth. And then:
Crawford tripled. Baker singled him home. Bresnahan singled. Sisler, who had remained in the game in a triple switch, homered. And the Teddys had an 8-3 lead.
Joe McGinnity allowed a run in the bottom of the inning. But in the top of the ninth, Honus Wagner doubled, Nap Lajoie tripled (his second three-bagger of the game) and Baker singled. Eight runs in three innings.
Louis Santop had three RBIs for the Crawfords. The Teddys got two runs scored apiece from Wagner, Lajoie, Crawford and Baker.
Christy Mathewson allowed three runs in six innings for his second win of the series. But the series MVP goes to Cobb, who went 8-for-19 with six RBIs and seven runs scored, hit a pair of homers and played crucial roles in two comeback wins.

Pete Alexander's three-hit shutout was backed by 14 hits for the Teddys, who have now outscored the Crawfords this series 35-14.
Home Run Baker lived up to his nickname with a second-inning solo shot that opened the scoring. The score remained 1-0 through five innings, but the Teddys dinged Crawfords ace Bill Foster for two runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth before tacking on two more off Verdell Mathis in the top of the ninth.

Rogan had tossed four scoreless frames, allowing just two hits, but he had to depart after striking out to end the bottom of the fourth. Chet Brewer inherited a 4-0 lead, built on a pair of two-run homers (Oscar Charleston in the first inning, Wild Bill Wright in the fourth) and tossed a scoreless frame himself in the fifth.
But Ty Cobb hit a two-run homer in the sixth, and the Teddys added another run when Louis Santop booted Nap Lajoie's nibbler. Brewer and Roosevelt Davis maintained the 4-3 lead into the ninth, but the Teddys tied it on five straight singles -- being held to just one run because two men were thrown out on the bases.
Sam Streeter and Chief Bender kept the game tied at four into the 11th, when the Teddys got a pinch hit single from Bobby Wallace, a single from Cobb, a sac fly from Eddie Collins, a single from Honus Wagner and a game-breaking triple from Tris Speaker. (Wallace, a mere 1-for-15 in the regular season, is 2-for-2 as a pinch hitter in this series.) Addie Joss, who had no saves in the regular season, nailed this one down with a perfect bottom of the 11th.
Three Finger Brown went eight innings, allowing four runs and 10 hits. Cobb was 4-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs.
Addendum: Behind 2-1 in the series, and with their bullpen hard-worked after short starts by Bill Foster and Rogan, and with Ted Trent a poor matchup against the left-handed Teddys, the Crawfords will shorten their rotation to Foster-Leon Day-Rogan and have Trent available in the pen. So Game 4 will match Pete Alexander and Foster.

The key segment came in the fourth and fifth innings. The Crawfords rang up four runs against Rube Waddell in the top half of the fourth, aided by a Nap Lajoie error and a pair of stolen bases by Oscar Charleston and Bill Wright. John Beckwith and Sammy T. Hughes each contributed two-RBI hits. The Teddys responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, tying the score at 5.
In the process, Sam Crawford was injured. Since Shoeless Joe Jackson was going to have to replace him in the outfield anyway, he was used to pinch-hit for Waddell (and got a RBI single). With Crawford's spot due third in the fifth, the Teddys opted to send Iron Man McGinnity, their weakest reliever, out for the top half of the inning.
It didn't work. Beckwith hit a three-run homer, and the Teddys never caught up. They came close repeatedly; Hughes twice robbed Ty Cobb of hits with men in scoring position.
Leon Day, back in the starting rotation for the Crawfords after spending much of the season in the bullpen, wasn't all that effective; he allowed seven runs, all earned, on 13 hits in 6.6 innings. Sam Streeter got the last seven outs for the save, allowing a run in the ninth.

It was that kind of game for the Crawfords, who used two members of their regular starting rotation in relief. Ted Trent allowed three runs in two innings; Chet Brewer held the Teddys scoreless for two innings.
Nap Lajoie went 4-for-5 for the Teddys, driving in three runs and scoring three. Sam Crawford also drove in three on three hits, including a triple. Eddie Collins was 5-for-5, all singles, with two runs and two RBIs. Crawford and Home Run Baker were the only Teddys who didn't score.

They ripped both Garfields starters, Pud Galvin and Tim Keefe, early and put up 24 runs and 33 hits in the two-game sweep.
The Obamas have been eliminated, and the Franklins can win the division with a sweep of its series or force a one-game playoff by taking two of three. Anything less for the Franklins, and the Teddys win the divisional crown.
Rube Waddell continued his stellar mound work of late for the Teddys in the opener. He was scintillating for six innings (three hits and four baserunners) and pitched around trouble in the seventh and eighth. He yielded two runs in the ninth, but by then his mates had racked up eight runs against Galvin, whose defense betrayed him (four unearned runs).
Nap Lajoie and Home Run Baker each had three RBIs in the contest. Eddie Collins, Tris Speaker and Lajoie each scored twice.
Three-Finger Brown needed a lot of help to get his eighth win in the second game, and he got plenty. The Teddys turned five singles and two walks into five first-inning runs, and when Lajoie bopped a two-run double in the second for a 7-0 lead, the game appeared decided.
But the Garfields fought back, with Sam Thompson driving in five runs, to narrow the margin to 8-6 after the top of the sixth inning.
But then the Teddys strung together six singles and a walk against John Clarkson in another five-run inning, and in the seventh Roger Bresnahan's three-run homer gave the Teddys a double-digit lead.
Iron Man McGinnity pitched the final three innings, allowing just an unearned run, for the save.
Thompson was five-for-five in the nightcap, and Jesse Burkett was four-for-five with three runs. Bresnahan drove in five runs and Lajoie three; for the series, Lajoie was six-for-nine with six RBIs and five runs.

The Ikes led the second game behind Whitey Ford all the way until the Teddys erupted for four runs in the seventh. Roger Bresnahan led off with a single, and Pete Alexander's bunt also went for a hit. Ty Cobb singled home Bresnahan to tie the game at 2. Alex was retired at the plate on Eddie Collins's grounder, but Honus Wagner walked to load the bases and Tris Speaker singled home Cobb and Collins. Nap Lajoie's grounder plated Wagner, and the Teddys had enough runs to withstand Eddie Mathews' homer in the ninth off Chief Bender.

Speaker's two-run homer in the fourth (it came with two outs) was the only scoring until after the Ikes pinch-hit for Spahn. The overworked Bob Lemon retired the first two Teddys in the eighth, but Hal Newhouser, brought in to dispose of the lefties at the top of the lineup, failed utterly; two walks and three singles brought in three runs. Mathews again homered in the ninth, too little too late.

Speaker was 6-for-11 in the series with seven RBIs, a home run and a double. Collins was 6-for-11 with four runs scored. Cobb and Lajoie each drove home four runs.

A pair of tough losses for the Teddys drops them into third place in Division A, one game behind the Franklins and a half game behind the Obamas.
The opener was a taut duel between Juan Marichal and Pete Alexander, 1-1 after seven innings, but the Kennedys loaded the bases for the red-hot George Brett, who tripled and then scored on Hank Aaron's single.
The Kennedys had pinch-hit for Marichal in the process, and Don Drysdale relieved. But after the first two Teddys reached, Sandy Koufax entered, and he retired six straight Teddys, two on strikes, to secure the game.
The Teddys responded by pounding Tom Seaver for six runs in the second inning of Game Two and added another four in the fifth on Roger Bresnahan's grand slam. Christy Mathewson allowed seven hits in his complete game win.
Stever Carlton allowed a pair of homers in the first two innings of the finale but then faced just 19 men in the next six innings. He allowed seven hits and struck out seven. Rollie Fingers popped up Sam Crawford with the bases loaded in the ninth to end it.

Hilldale's season has long since been a shambles, but they're doing a pretty good job of playing spoiler. They took two of three from Homestead in the previous series, and here dented the Teddys.
Nip Winters won perhaps the most impressive pitchers duel of the season to date in the opener. He and Rube Waddell each allowed solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings, then matched zeros into the 12th. Winters retired 20 straight batters after Ty Cobb's game-tying double in the fifth. Waddell, victimized by a run-scoring throwing error by Home Run Baker, had only one 1-2-3 inning in that period but matched Winters zero for zero.
Hilldale loaded the bases in the 12th, and Newt Allen singled home two men with two outs to put them in front. Andy Cooper allowed a hit in the bottom of the inning but no runs. Judy Johnson was 4-for-6 with two runs.
Three Finger Brown allowed five hits and no runs in eight innings of the finale, while the Teddys ground out six runs off Bill Byrd, four of them in the seventh and eighth innings. Tris Speaker was 3-for-4 with two RBIs (5-for-9 in the series with a triple). Iron Man McGinnity mopped up, allowing two runs.

The Teddys' relentless base-hit attack woke up late in the second game, and their ability to string base-hits together resulted in a dead heat atop Division A.
The first game was dominated by the Franklins. Dazzy Vance threw a three-hitter at the Teddys, and the Franklins chipped away at Three-Finger Brown for four runs in seven innings, then salted the game away against Addie Joss.
The Franklins were just as dominant in the second game -- until the eighth inning. Lefty Grove carried a 7-1 lead into that frame, scattering eight hits in seven innings. Meanwhile, the Franklins racked Pete Alexander for five runs in the first three innings and greeted Iron Man McGinnity with two more tallies in the sixth. Babe Ruth homered and scored three runs; Lou Gehrig had three RBIs.
But everything changed in the bottom of the eighth. The first five men to face Grove singled. With six left-handed hitters due up, the Franklins bypassed closer Dizzy Dean for lefty Herb Pennock, and the curveball specialist continued to flounder. He faced six men, three of whom reached and two of whom scored.
The seven-run outburst gave the Teddys the lead, and Chief Bender made it stand up. The Teddys bullpen (McGinnity, Eppa Rixey and Bender) retired the last 10 Franklins to bat.
George Sisler had two doubles and two runs scored in as many at-bats. No Teddy had more than one RBI.
The third game pitted legendary Giants screwballers Carl Hubbell and Christy Mathewson. The Teddys put up three runs in the first and held a 4-0 lead into the fourth, when the Franklins scored five runs. The inning was highlighted by Gabby Hartnett's two-run double and Pie Traynor's two-run triple.
But Matty gave up just one hit in the next four innings, and the Teddys chipped away at Hubbell for single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.

The X-Giants took a 5-4 lead into the ninth inning of the opener, but Hilton Smith allowed his first runs of the season. Pinch-hitter Joe Jackson and Ty Cobb rapped back-to-back triples, and Eddie Collins singled home Cobb for the go-ahead run. Chief Bender made it stand up.
Cobb was 5-for-5 with a double. Martin Dihigo drove in four runs for the X-Giants.
Rube Waddell was sensational in the second game, limiting the X-Giants to two singles and two walks. He struck out seven. Rube Foster had his best start of the season for the X-Giants, but a costly error by Ben Taylor resulted in four unearned tallies in the fifth inning.
