All told, half of the 10 starts in this series came from Hall of Famers. None got a win.

Game One, in 1969's Candlestick Park, pitted Tim Lincecum, the 2009 NL Cy Young winner, against Juan Marichal, an easy Hall of Fame selection in his prime in 1969. Lincecum gave up a solo homer to Willie McCovey (the NL MVP in 1969) in the bottom of the fourth, Randy Winn doubled home Edgar Renteria in the top of the fifth to tie the score.

It stayed 1-1 into the ninth, when Pedro Sandoval singled to lead off and Aaron Rowand doubled. Freddie Lewis walked to load the bases, and Don McMahon relieved the weary Marichal. McMahon fanned Jose Uribe and popped up Bengie Molina, but Renteria drew a walk for force home the go-ahead run. Brian Wilson allowed two baserunners in the bottom of the ninth but no runs.

Matt Cain outdueled Gaylord Perry in Game Two. Perry yielded three runs in five innings, including a Rowand homer, before leaving for a pinch hitter. The 09 Giants blew the game open with three runs in the seventh off Ron Bryant. Cain went seven innings. Jeremy Affeldt got out of a jam created by Bobby Howry in the eighth and finished for the save.

The series shifted to 2009 and AT&T Park, where Game Three did not involve a Cooperstown starter (but did feature a pair of past Cy Young winners). The 69 Giants smacked Barry Zito for three doubles and five runs in the first inning, while Mike McCormick provided seven innings of two-run ball. Dick Dietz had three runs and two RBIs for the 69 Giants with a homer, a double, a single and a walk.

Game Four made up for the previous game's lack of Hall of Fame pitchers -- Marichal versus the fading Randy Johnson. The Big Unit was perfect for four innings, while a Dietz error set up a two-run inning in the third for the 09 Giants. Johnson gave up two hits in the fifth but escaped on a double-play grounder, but in the sixth allowed three straight hits. Brian Medders gave up a game-tying sac fly to Ron Hunt, but then picked off Bobby Bonds and struck out Willie Mays to end the threat. Freddie Sanchez broke the 2-2 tie with an RBI double in the botton of the seventh, and after Marichal was pinch-hit for in the bottom of the inning, the 09 Giants strung together six straight hits, including back-to-back triples by Travis Ishikawa and Eugenio Velez, to blow the game open.

Lincecum wrapped up the series in Game Five by outdueling Perry. Sandoval and Nate Schierholtz drove home runs in the first inning. Perry got one back with a perfectly executed safety squeeze bun in the second on which he was credited with a base hit. But that was all the 69 Giants could muster. Jose Uribe homered off Bryant for the final margin.

Player of the Series goes to Lincecum, for two starts of 16 innings and two runs to outduel both Marichal and Perry.

Player availability: All pitchers are available for Game One of the second round.

Projected rotation: Lincecum-Cain-Zito-Jonathan Sanchez or Johnson-(Lincecum)-(Cain)-(Zito)

Runs were at a premium in this series, as suggested by this fact: the 2009 Cardinals faced a first-ballot Hall of Fame starter in five of the seven games and managed to win three of them.

Bob Gibson went 10 innings for the win in Game One, but didn't get the complete game. Joe Torre staked Gibson to a 2-0 lead with a homer in the third inning, but the 09 Cardinals tied it in the sixth by stringing together three singles and a hit batter, all with two outs. The 69 Cards took the lead again in the ninth on an error by Matt Holliday, and gave the lead back in the bottom of the inning on an error by Lou Brock. In the 11th, Colby Rasmus gunned down Curt Flood at the plate trying to score on a Vada Pinson double, but Torre made it academic by singling home Pinson. Joe Hoerner made this lead stand up.

The 69 Cards took a first inning lead in Game Two, and Steve Carlton was sailing along into the sixth, With two outs, Albert Pujols singled and Ryan Ludwick homered, and that concluded the scoring. Adam Wainwright, after allowing hits or walks to seven of the first 14 men he faced, retired 14 in a row from the third to eighth innings.

The series shifted to 1969 and Busch Memorial Stadium. The 09 Cards jumped on Nellie Briles for four runs in the first three innings of Game Three, with the biggest blow being a two-run triple by Joe Thurston. That was all they got or needed, as Joel Pineiro tossed a four-hit shutout in which nobody reached second base.

Gibson evened the series with a complete-game win in Game Four. Flood doubled home a run in the fifth and Mike Shannon plated Torre in the sixth with a sac fly for a 2-0 lead, but the 09 team tied it in the seventh on three singles and an error by Dal Maxvill. Maxville got that run back in the eight with an RBI single as the 69 team took a 4-2 lead that Gibson maintained.

Another Maxvill error proved crucial in Game Four. He booted a Chris Carpenter grounder to open the third inning; two outs and a walk later, Pujols hit a three-run homer off Carlton. Carpenter worked out of a based-loaded jam in the fifth. Franklin finished the game but allowed a two-run homer to Steve Huntz in the ninth.

With the series back in 2009, the 69 Cardinals bypassed some bigger names on its staff (Briles, Mudcat Grant, Dave Giusti, Ray Washburn and Mike Torrez) and entrusted an elimination game to Chuck Taylor, Taylor allowed one run in five innings before giving way to a pinch hitter in a two-run sixth. Torrez, Giusti and Hoerner provided four innings of one-run relief, and the series was down to one game.

Gibson had a horrendous first inning: A leadoff walk to Skip Schumaker, a single by Matt Holliday, and a homer by Pujols. He didn't allow another run, but Pineiro followed up his Game Three shutout with six scoreless innings. A Pujols error at the start of the seventh opened the doors for a two-run outburst that chased Pineiro, but Kyle McClellan got out of the inning on double play. and the 69 Cardinals never got a man as far as second after that.

Player of the series: Pineiro. for two wins on 15 innings of work in two starts with one earned run allowed.

Player availability: Pineiro cannot start before Game Three. Wainwright can start Game Two with the penalty.

Projected rotation: Carpenter-Kyle Lohse-Wainwright-Pineiro-(Carpenter)-(Lohse)-(Wainwright)

The 1969 Seattle Pilots used six different starting pitchers and got only eight innings total from the one who started twice, but they still managed to beat the 2009 Milwaukee Brewers. The road team won every game.

The Pilots started nominal reliever Jim Bouton in the opener, and the knuckleballer gave them 6.6 innings of five-hit, two-run ball. John Kennedy and Don Mincher homered off Yovani Gallardo in the third inning, and the Pilots added three more runs in the fifth on four doubles (Bouton, Tommy Harper, Steve Hovley and Mincher). When Bouton loaded the bases in the seventh, John Gelnar got out of the jam, and he and Bob Locker wrapped the game up without allowing a hit.

The Pilots got another big third inning in Game Two. Wayne Comer capped a four-run outburst with a three-run homer off Brandon Looper. Gene Brabender allowed just two hits in five shutput innings; he left for a pinch-hitter in a failed attempt to add to the lead. Mike Marshall allowed one run in three innings of relief, and Locker handled the ninth.

The series moved to Seattle's old Sick's Stadium for Game Three, and Brewers stars Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder feasted in the bandbox. Braun went 4-for-5 with a homer and double and scored four times; Fielder hammered a pair of homers, singled and scored three times. The Pilots made the score respectable with a pair of three-run innings, but the Brewers lead was too big.

Game Four also went the Brewers' way, but not without a struggle. Pilots starter Marty Pattin was pulled after just two innings, and Marshall worked eight innings in relief, allowing one run while his teammates chipped away at the lead. Trevor Hoffman was entrusted with a 4-3 lead in the ninth, but the first four Pilots either singled or walked. Hoffman wriggled out of the jam with a tie, and the Brewers won when Mike Cameron tripled and Jason Kendall doubled in the 11th.

The Brewers completed their sweep of the games in Seattle by shelling Diego Segui for seven runs and adding three more against Steve Barber in Game Five. The Brewers returned to Milwaukee and Miller Park with a 3-2 series lead.

Brabender, making his second start for the Pilots, gave up three runs in three innings and was pulled for a pinch hitter in the fourth. Tommy Davis came through with an RBI double as the Pilots took a 5-3 lead. Bouton held the lead for two innings but gave up two runs in the sixth for a 5-5 tie. But the Pilots pounded out four runs on five hits and a walk in the eighth, and John O'Donohue and Locker combined for three hitless innings to send the series to a seventh game.

The Pilots took a 2-0 lead two batters into the game as Mike Hegan homered. They piled on six runs in the fifth inning to chase Jeff Suppan, with Hegan hitting a grand slam. Starter John Gelnar  allwed three runs, one unearned, in eight innings.

Player of the series: Hegan's .272 batting average isn't that impressive, but he had 10 RBIs and drew 10 walks for a .500 OBP.

Player availability: Jim Pagliaroni is injured; if active for the second round, he cannot play until Game Three. Gelnar cannot pitch until Game Three, and Brabender can start Game Two with penalty, Game Three without.

Projected rotation: There is no true rotation, Brabender will start Game Three and Game Seven should the series go that far. Game One and Game Two can go to any of Barber, Bouton, Brunet, Marshall, Pattin or Segui.

The 1969 Kansas City Royals beat 2009 Cy Young winner Zach Greinke twice, but still lost the series due in large part to a leaky bullpen.

Mike Fiore hit a three-run homer off Greinke in the fourth inning of Game One, and Wally Bunker didn't allow a run until the seventh. Moe Drabowsky got out of the jam Bunker left behind and finished for a save while his teammates added three more runs against Juan Cruz.

Brian Bannister and Dick Drago dueled in Game Two, Pat Kelly homered off Bannister to open the game, but the righty shut out the 69 Royals for six innings after that, while David DeJesus scored runs in the sixth and eight to give the 09 Royals the win. Robinson Tejada threw two scoreless innings for the win, and Yuniesky Betancourt singled in two runs in the ninth to widen the margin.

The series shifted to Kauffman Stadium for Game Three, and it was a doozy. Fiore and Bob Oliver homered to give Roger Nelson a 3-0 lead after four innings. Nelson's own error resulted in a run in the fifth, but the 69 Royals added three more runs for a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. Nelson allowed a single and a walk to Betancourt and DeJesus, whereupon Tom Burgmeier relieved. The lefty allowed three singles and the score was 6-4 for the 69 team.

After a scoreless eighth, Drabowsky entered for the save, but Mike Jacobs singled and Billy Butler homered for the tie. Drabowsky followed the ninth inning with four scoreless frames, but they were matched by Joakim Soria and Tejada. Jim Rooker threw two scoreless innings, and in the top of the 16th Oliver hit his second homer of the game, this one off Tejada, who was in his fifth inning of work himself.

Dave Wickersham got the call for the bottom of the 16th, but he got only one out. Butler tripled, Mark Teahen singled for the tie, Willie Bloomquist singled and after the 69 Royals failed to turn a double play, Betancourt singled for the game winner.

The 69 Royals recovered to win Game Four as Bill Butler -- no relation to the 09's first baseman -- allowed four hits in eight innings. (Billy Butler went 1-for-3 against the lefty, the hit an RBI double in the first inning.)

The 69 Royals retook the series lead as they pummeled Greinke for six runs on 13 hits in 6 1-3 innings. Bunker wasn't as effective as in Game One, but Burgmeier and Wickersham managed to hang on to the lead for three innings, although there were two on when Wickersham got the final out.

The series returned to Memorial Stadium and 1969 for Game Six, and the 09 team enjoyed the blast from the past, They shelled Drago for six runs in five innings while Bannister held the home team scoreless for six innings. John Bale and Jamey Wright got the lead to Soria and the series was tied.

Game Seven's final score was deceptive. The 69 Royals held a 3-1 lead through seven innings. with Nelson holding the visitors to just four hits in six innings before leaving for a pinch hitter. But the 09 scored six runs on just three hits in the eighth against Rooker and Hedlund -- there were also three walks and a hit batter -- and two more in the ninth. Tejada, who relieved Gil Meche in the seventh, got the win, his third of the series.

Player of the series: Several hitters had outstanding series -- Mike Fiore, for example, was 11 for 26 with eight RBIs and seven runs -- but in a debatable decision it goes to Tejada, whose eight innings of one-run relief over three outings stands in marked contrast to the ineffective relief work of the 69 team.

Player availability: DeJesus is injured through Game Two of the second round if he is left on the active list. Bannister and Meche may not start until at least Game Three. Greinke can start Game One on full rest.

Projected rotation: Greinke-undecided-Bannister-Greinke-(Meche)-(undecided)-(Greinke).
