Obamas 19-12, Garfields 12-19

Pitcher use: Nichols and Galvin need three games, Ryan and Welch need two. Radbourn pitched one inning in finale.

Game One: Obamas 4, Garfields 2
WP: Ryan (3-2)

The Obamas never trailed in the two-game sweep.

Nolan Ryan fanned 10 Garfield batters in eight innings of nine-hit ball in the opener. Mickey Mantle and Mick Schmidt each hit two-run homers in the fourth inning off Mickey Welch to supply all the offense Ryan needed or received.

Ed Walsh wrapped up the game by striking out Sam Thompson and Ed Delahanty with the tying runs in scoring position.

The Obamas' Kid Nichols went the distance in the nightcap despite allowing 11 hits and solo runs in four stright innings. Schmidt and Billy Hamilton each scored three runs for the Obamas.

Series 13: Homestead sweeps Ikes

Homestead 18-12, Ikes 10-21

Pitcher use: Roberts and D. Brown need three games, Paige and Wynn need two games, Salmon and Lemon need one game. Matlock pitched one inning in finale.

Game One: Homestead 5, Ikes 3
WP: Paige (4-2)
LP: Wynn (1-6)
HR: Banks (11), Musial (6), Wilson (5), T. Williams (6), J. Gibson (13)

Game Two: Homestead 9, Ikes 8 (11 innings)
WP: Matlock (3-2)
LP: Lemon (0-3)
HR: J. Gibson (14), C. Smith (8), Mays (5), Musial (7), Campanella (2)

---
Homestead entered the series just out of first place in Division B, and did what it needed to do to keep the heat on the Crawfords.

Back to back homers in the sixth inning from Josh Gibson and Jud Wilson put Homestead ahead in the first game, but the Ikes tied it at three on a Ted Williams homer. But Homestead pinned the loss on Early Wynn late with a two-run rally in the eighth that featured a triple by Mule Suttles and a double by Dobie Moore.

Satchel Paige went the distance (as did Wynn), allowing just six hits and one walk while striking out 10 -- but surrendered three solo homers.

Both lineups feasted on second-game starters Dave Brown and Robin Roberts. Roberts allowed at least one run in each of the first six innings but stopped the Homestead attack in the seventh and eighth innings. Brown opened the game with three shutout frames but allowed multiple runs in each of the next three innings.

But relievers Harry Salmon, Leroy Matlock and Bob Lemon took the game into the 11th inning before Lemon cracked (walk, single, single).

Stan Musial was 4-for-8 with two homers, two walks, a double, three runs and four RBIs. Josh Gibson also homered in each game and was 4-for-9. Suttles was 6-for-8.

Series 13: Franklins sweep Hilldale

Franklins 20-11, Hilldale 9-22

Pitcher use: Feller and Winters need three games, Hubbell and Williams two. Powell pitched two innings in finale, Dismukes and Hoyt one apiece.

Game One: Franklins 3, Hilldale 0
WP: Hubbell (7-0)
LP: Williams (2-6)
HR: Ruth (15), Vaughn (2)

Game Two: Franklins 7, Hilldale 1
WP: Feller (3-2)
LP: Winters (0-5)
HR: Ruth (16), Wells (6), Cronin (5)

---
Only Willie Wells' eighth-inning homer in the second game kept lowly Hilldale from being shut out in both games.

Smokey Joe Williams pitched well in the opener, but not as well as Carl Hubbell. Williams, supported by five double play grounders (three off the bat of Bill Dickey) allowed just seven hits, but one was a solo shot by Arky Vaughn and another a two-run dinger by Babe Ruth. Hubbell, meanwhile, scattered five harmless singles while walking just one.

Bob Feller had his stuff in the nightcap, striking out 10 in eight innings of work. He got early support from Joe Cronin and Ruth, who each hit two-run homers off Nip Winters (Cronin in the second, Ruth in the third). Pie Traynor also had a pair of RBIs.

Ruth has now homered in three consecutive games.

This series figured to be a slugfest, and it largely lived up to its billing.

Ray Brown entered Game One with an ERA of 11.13 for Homestead, gave up 10 runs in eight innings, and had his ERA rise to 11.15. And, had reliever Harry Salmon not given up a homer to Lou Gehrig, Brown would have gotten a no-decision.

The Franklins scored two runs apiece in the second, fourth and fifth innings and held a 10-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth. But reliever Waite Hoyt faced seven men in the eighth and got just one out. Dizzy Dean had to coax a double-play ball from Tubby Scales to keep the score at 10-8.

Gehrig's blast widened the margin to three, but with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Jud Wilson singled, Mule Suttles homered and Hurley McNair tripled to make it 11-10 with the tying run on third before Heavy Johnson flew out to right field.

Dazzy Vance allowed eight hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out five. Ray Brown allowed 14 hits and two walks.

Lefty Grove held the potent Homesteaders in check in the finale, scattering eight hits. Max Manning, who had allowed 11 earned runs total on the season, was battered for four runs before getting an out and eight runs in the first two innings. Rogers Hornsby homered in his first three at-bats, and Mel Ott was 5-for-6 with a homer and two doubles.

Of the nine men in the Franklin lineup, only Gehrig and Grove went hitless; the other seven all had at least two hits.

For the series, Hornsby was 5-for-10 with the three homers and nine RBIs. Ott was 7-for-10 with five runs scored.

Series 12: Obamas sweep X-Giants

Obamas 17-12, X-Giants 15-14

Pitcher use update: Jones needs four games, Johnson and Dihigo three games, Plank two games, McDonald and Gomez one game each. Willis pitched two innings in finale.

Game One: Obamas 2, X-Giants 1
WP: Walsh (1-1)
LP: Dihigo (2-5)
HR: Mantle (9)

Game Two: Obamas 4, X-Giants 3 (12 innings)
WP: Gomez (1-2)
LP: McDonald (0-1)
HR: Boudreau (2)

---
The Obamas had to come from behind twice in the late innings to get the two-game sweep.

In the first game, Martin Dihigo held the Obamas hitless through five innings, but Eddie Plank matched him scoreless inning for scoreless inning until the sixth, when Double Duty Radcliffe singled home Rap Dixon. The Obamas tied it in the eighth after Dihigo walked the first two hitters, and Mickey Mantle put the Obamas ahead in the ninth with a leadoff homer.

Plank and Ed Walsh combined to allow seven hits, three more than Dihigo allowed.

The X-Giants took advantage of a rare error by Charlie Gehringer in the first inning to put up three unearned runs against Walter Johnson, but they could do nothing more against the Big Train. The Obamas picked up an unearned run of their own in the fourth against Slim Jones and tied it with two runs in the eighth.

The bullpens -- Vic Willis and Lefty Gomez for the Obamas, Webster McDonald for the X-Giants -- put up zeros into the 12th inning, when the Obamas scored another unearned run. The winning tally scored on a wild pitch.

The normally outstanding X-Giant defense was charged with four errors in the second game. The X-Giants left runners on third base in the 11th and 12th innings.

Series 12: Ikes, Crawfords split

Ikes 10-19, Crawfords 17-12

Pitcher use: Spahn and Foster need three games; Ford and Brewer need two; Bunning needs one. Newhouser pitched two innings in finale, Day one.

Game One: Ikes 9, Crawfords 5
WP: Ford (4-3)
LP: Brewer (1-4)
HR: Mathews 2 (6), Schoendienst (2)

Game Two: Crawfords 8, Ikes 4
WP: B. Foster (5-2)
LP: Spahn (2-4)
HR: Mathews (7), Charleston (7), Wright (6), Lundy (3)

---

The Ikes batted around in the third inning of the first game and drove Chet Brewer from the hill after four innings. Whitey Ford held the Crawfords in check for six innings, but was roughed up for four runs in the seventh, in part because of an error by Ernie Banks.

Still, the Ikes had a fairly comfortable win, powered by a pair of homers from Eddie Mathews and another from Red Schoendienst. The Ikes also had a pair of triples and three doubles.

The second game went the other way. Both Bill Foster and Warren Spahn were touched for three runs in the first inning. The Ikes added another tally in the second, but the Crawfords banged out another three runs in their half of the frame -- aided by another Banks boot -- and knocked Spahn out after the third inning.

Foster, meanwhile, settled in. The big southpaw allowed just three hits in the next six innings and got a pair of double plays to make it all the easier.

Mathews had three homers and six RBIs for the Ikes. Ray Dandridge went 7-for-9 for the Crawfords with three runs and two RBIs. Oscar Charleston was 6-for-9 with four RBIs, two runs, a homer and a pair of doubles.

Series 12: Garfields sweep Kennedys

Garfields 12-17, Kennedys 13-15

Pitcher use update: Marichal and Young need three games, Keefe and Gibson two.

Game One: Garfields 2, Kennedys 1
WP: Keefe (4-3)
LP: Gibson (5-2)
Save: Rusie (2)

Game Two: Garfields 2, Kennedys 0
WP: Young (3-4)
LP: Marichal (2-4)

---
The Garfields fell out of the race early, but they've now won seven of their last eight and eight of their last 10.

Pitching and defense ruled this series, with Tim Keefe outdueling Bob Gibson in the opener and Cy Young tossing one of the best games of the season in the finale.

Keefe went eight innings in game one, allowing six hits and one run. The key inning came in the seventh; with the score tied at one, Luis Aparicio led off with a triple. Keefe fanned Gibson, then passed Joe Morgan and Robin Yount before inducing a double-play grounder from Hank Aaron.

The Garfields responded by scoring in the bottom of the frame, with Ed Delahanty doubling home King Kelly.

Gibson allowed nine hits in his eight innings, twice pitching out of bases-loaded, two-out situations.

The Garfields scored twice in the first inning of the second game -- single by Jesse Burkett, triple by Sam Thompson, grounder by Delahanty -- and Young made those tallies stand up.

Old Cy tossed a two-hitter, allowing just three baserunners all game. Only one man reached second (Yount on a second-inning double). Young retired 20 men in a row at one point. He walked one and struck out four.

Series 12: Teddys, Hilldale split

Teddys 17-12, Hilldale 9-20

Pitcher use update: Redding and Alexander need three games, Brown and Byrd two games, McGinnity one.

Game One: Teddys 10, Hilldale 3

Game Two: Hilldale 12, Teddys 2
WP: Redding (2-4)
LP: Alexander (2-5)

---

Two games, two blowouts, two compete games.

Three Finger Brown allowed three runs in the first five innings but only two baserunners (no hits) in his final four innings of work. The game was tied at three through six innings, but the Teddys roughed up Bill Byrd for four runs in the seventh and tagged Dizzy Dismukes for three more in the ninth. Roger Bresnahan hit a leadoff homer in the seventh, and Sam Crawford had a three-run shot in the ninth.

Hilldale pieced together three runs in the first inning of the second game and added solo runs in the second and third innings. Hilldale pounded Joe McGinnity for seven runs in the seventh and eight innings to make things easy for Dick Redding in the late goings.

Buck Leonard hit three homers in the two games; he was 4-for-8 with seven RBIs, four runs, 14 total bases and a walk.

The X-Giants took sizable leads in both games, but only got one win out of it.

Carl Hubbell yielded five runs in the first two innings of the opener as the X-Giants peppered him for nine hits in the two frames. But the screwball specialist choked off all subsequent attempted rallies and went the distance for his sixth win.

Joe DiMaggio hit a three-run homer in the third off Rube Foster; Foster had retired the first two batters but then gave up four runs. DiMaggio added a two-run single in the fourth to put the Franklins ahead to stay.

John Donaldson sparkled in the second game, shutting the potent Franklins down for seven innings, by which time the X-Giants had put up four runs against Bob Feller. The Franklins did rise up for three runs in the eighth, but Hilton Smith tossed a perfect ninth to finish things.
