The vaunted New York bullpen suffered repeated meltdowns in the four games as the Nationals won three of the contests in their final at-bats.

The series opened in Washington with Max Scherzer (eight innings, four hits, 11 strikeouts) and Luis Severino (7.1 innings, three hits, 10 strikeouts) matching goose eggs. Their relievers followed suit until the 13th, when Starlin Castro hit a two-out homer off Matt Albers, in his third inning of relief, With Arodis Chapman and David Robertson having already been used, the Yankees used Dellin Betances in the bottom of the inning. Pinch-hitter Howie Kendrick singled. After Trea Turner popped up, Betances walked Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon and Daniel Murphy (with a wild pitch mixed in) in succession to tie the game. With Ryan Zimmerman at the plate, Harper then scored the winning run on a passed ball charged to Gary Sanchez.

That pitchers duel was followed by Game Two's slugfest. Masahiro Tanaka was pretty good for five innings (one run allowed) but Betances and Adam Warren each allowed three runs in one inning of work apiece. The Yankees scored four runs off Jacob Turner in the sixth and two more in the ninth off Matt Grace to take an 8-7 lead, but Chapman allowed singles to Harper and Rendon in the bottom of the inning followed by Zimmerman's two-out two-run double.

Gio Gonzalez took a two-hit shutout into the ninth of Game Three in Yankee Stadium, while Zimmerman hit a two-run homer and Matt Wieters chased home two runs with a double. Gonzalez walked the leadoff man in the ninth, and Brandon Kintzler entered to get three outs from two hitters, Aaron Judge and Sanchez, to end it.

The Nats wrapped up the series with another extra-inning win in Game Four. Wieters doubled in three runs in the second inning. Judge hit a two-run homer for New York in the third off Stephen Strasburg, and Aaron Hicks a solo shot in the fifth to tie the game at three. It remained 3-3 into the 10th. Tommy Kahnle walked Jayson Werth to open the inning, then allowed a single to Michael A. Taylor, advancing Werth to third. Betances entered and got a popup and a strikeout before walking Harper and Rendon to plate the go-ahead run. Sean Doolittle worked a perfect bottom of the 10th with a pair of strikeouts to end the game and series.

The Phillies won their third straight Game Seven to knock off the favored Red Sox. Two of their wins came in extra innings with clutch homers off Boston relief ace Craig Kimbrel.

The first of those came in Game One in Fenway Park. Boston opened a 5-3 lead with four-run fourth, but Rhys Hoskins tied it with a two-run homer in the seventh. Kimbrel entered in the 10th with the score still knotted, but Hoskins led off the inning with his second homer of the game, and the Phillies' Hector Neris protected the lead in the bottom of the inning.

The Red Sox took Game Two with a five-run third inning and 7.1 innings from Rick Porcello, who allowed two runs on nine hits. Mitch Moreland doubled and homered to drive in three runs for Boston, and Andrew Benintendi also doubled in a pair.

Game Three was in Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Ballpark, and it was a doozy. Pedro Sandoval, who took over at third base when Brock Holt was injured, clubbed a two-run homer in the seventh to give Boston a 3-1 lead. Kimbrel struck out the first two men in the ninth, but then Maikel Franco doubled and Cameron Rupp homered to tie the game. Blaine Boyer faced the minimum in the 10th, 11th and 12th innings, but in the bottom of the 13th Hoskins doubled home Odubel Herrera from first base to win it. Adam Morgan pitched five scoreless innings of relief for the Phillies.

Philadelphia scored five runs off David Price in the fifth inning of Game Four, with an error by Jackie Bradley Jr. playing an unlikely role in the disaster. Bradley's homer off winner Jerad Eickoff was the only tally for the Red Sox. Tommy Joseph had three RBIs for the Phillies.

In the first of three elimination games, Chris Sale outdueled Nick Pivetta in Game Five. Sale allowed one unearned run in six innings, leaving for a pinch-hitter (Sandoval, who singled in a run). The Boston bullpen recorded the final six outs on strikeouts.

The Sox romped in their home park in Game Six, scoring 12 runs on 13 hits, six walks and a hit batter to even the series. Porcello went seven innings for the win, surrendering five hits and fanning eight. Moreland and Xander Bogaerts each drove in four runs.


Hoskins hit a two-run homer off Drew Pomeranz in the first inning of Game Seven, but Eduardo Nunez led off the bottom of the inning with a homer of his own off Aaron Nola, and Bogaerts singled home Benintendi later in the inning to even the score. But the Phillies scored single runs in the third and fourth innings and then erupted for three more in the fifth, working through three Red Sox hurlers in the inning. Nola scattered seven hits in 6.2 innings and left with a 7-2 lead. The Phillies bullpen spluttered getting the final seven outs. Moreland doubled home two runs in a three-run eighth, and Neris allowed a single and double in the ninth before retiring Bogaerts on a deep fly ball to end the game and series.

The 1924 Pirates won three games in Yankee Stadium to oust the favored 1961 Yankees.

Game One was the only home win for the Yankees. Mickey Mantle hit a three-run homer in the first inning, his first circuit clout of the tournament, to give the Yankess a lead they would not relinquish. Whitey Ford allowed two earned runs in seven innings for the win

The Pirates evened the series in Game Two despite a six-run sixth inning from the Yankees, Pittsburgh hit five triples and six doubles. Babe Adams threw three perfect innings in relief and was credited with the win.

The series moved to Pittsburgh's Forbes Field, circa 1924, for the next three games. Game Three was a marathon affair, with both Johnny Morrison and Luis Arroyo throwing six innings of relief. Arroyo entered in the bottom of the 10th with a man on second and no outs and wriggled out of the jam. The Yankees broke through in the 16th for an unearned run off Morrison, but but Kiki Cuyler tripled home the tying run off Jim Coates in the bottom of the inning and scored the winner on a single by Pie Traynor.

Game Four went 10 innings. Mantle's three-run homer in the fifth gave New York a 5-0 lead, but the Priates got a run in the eighth and four in the ninth off Tex Clevenger and Coates to tie it. Errors by Pittsburgh's middle infielders set up a pair of unearned runs in the 10th, and Coates held Pittsburgh off the board in the bottom of the inning.

New York won Game Five with a seven-run seventh. Pittsburgh had taken a 5-0 lead after four innings, with Wilbur Cooper driving in three runs with a single and double and Cuyler hitting a two-run homer off Ford. But Pittsburgh committed a pair of errors to ioen the top of the seventh, and Bob Cerv capped the rally with a three-run shot.  All eight Yankee runs were unearned, but they all counted.

The series returned to 1961's version of Yankee Stadium for Game Six. The hoem tem led 3-2 after seven innings, but Cuyler's lead-off homer tied it in the eighth, and later in the inning pinch-hitter Carson Bigbee tripled in two runs to cap a four-run rally. Glenn Wright hit a two-run homer in the ninth for the final margin.

Mantle hit another three-run first-inning homer in Game Seven, but the game and series turned on the fourth inning when left fielder Johnny Blanchard could not corral a ball hit by Charlie Grimm that went for a two-out RBI single. Rabbit Maranville followed with a two-run homer that put Pittsburgh up 4-3. The Pirates plated two more runs in the fifth with triples from Max Carey and Traynor. Ray Kremer went the distance for Pittsburgh, alloing just one earned run over the final eight innings.

The Yankee bullpen collectively worked 13 scoreless innings over the five games, allowing two hits.

Aaron Judge hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first of the Yankee Stadium opener off Mudcat Grant, and that concluded the scoring for the day, Luis Severino allowed four hits in six innings for the win, and Dellin Betances, David Robertson and Aroldis Chapman each worked an inning.

Judge tied Game Two with an eighth-inning homer off Gary Bell. Chase Headley doubled home Gary Sanchez later in the inning with the winning run. Adam Warren, the second of three relievers, got the win.

The series shifted to 1961 and Municipal Stadium in Cleveland for Game Three. Todd Frazier hit a pair of homers and drove in all four runs to wreck Dick Stigman's long relief outing, initated when start Jim Perry was injured after two scoreless innings. Stigman allowed four runs on five hits in six innings. Chad Green was credited with the win.

Michael Pineda, New York's fourth starter for this series, wild-pitched home both Cleveland runs in Game Four. That was enough for the Tribe, who got seven innings of one-run, four-hit ball from Barry Latman and pieced together the final six outs from three relievers.

Severino and the bullpen wrapped up the series in Game Five. Judge hit his third homer of the series in the fourth inning. Severino didn't allow a hit until two outs into the sixth, when Willie Kirkland followed a Starlin Castro error with a homer. Severino finished the inning, but the Yankees then started their bullpen parade, with Tommy Kahnle, Robertson and Chapman each throwing a hitless inning -- a four-pitcher one-hitter.
