The 1924 Pirates won the final three to take a tight series that featured three extra-inning games.

Nolan Arenado led off the bottom of the 10th of Game One with a homer off reliever Emil Yde to give the Rockies the win. The Rockies scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Johnny Morrison and Yde to send the game into extras. Charlie Blackmon had three doubles and a bases-loaded walk for Colorado.

Ray Kremer went the distance in Game Two to even the series for Pittsburgh. The righty allowed two runs on six hits, one a solo homer by Carlos Gonzalez. Earl Smith went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI for the Pirates, and Eddie Moore and Glenn Wright each had three hits.

The series shifted to 1924's version of Forbes Field for Game Three. The Rockies got four scoreless innings of relief from Pat Neshek, Chris Rusin, Adam Ottavino, Antonio Senzatela and Greg Holland to support Kyle Freeland, who was credited with the win for five innings of two-run ball. Arenado drove in two runs for Colorado.

Blackmon's 10th inning homer off Babe Adams lifted the Rockies to their third win of the series in Game Four. Blackmon scored three of Colorado's four runs (Arenado had the other) and had a triple and single. Moore scored two of Pittsburgh's three runs; he and Kiki Cuyler had back-to-back triples in the first inning off Tyler Chatwood.

Pittsburgh won its first elimination game on the strength of a five-run third inning in which the Pirates hit four consecutive doubles off starter and loser Tyler Anderson -- Cuyler, Wright, Pie Traynor and Charlie Grimm. Wright went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, a single and a steal; he scored one run and drove in four. Wilbur Cooper went the distance despite allowing a two-run homer to Arenado in the opening frame and single runs in the third and fifth innings. Arenado singled twice and totaled three RBIs.

The series reverted to 2017's Coors Field, and Kremer threw another complete game win to send the series to a seventh game. This one was a five-hit shutout in which no Rockie reached second base. Cuyler hit a pair of two-run homers and Traynor hit a solo shot, all off German Marquez.

The decisive tilt was a see-saw affair. Pittsburgh took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, with Wright hitting a leadoff homer in that frame off Jon Gray and Rabbit Maranville and starter Lee Meadows contributing RBI singles. But Trevor Story hit a three-run homer in the Rockies' four-run third for the lead. Pittsburgh retook the lead in the sixth, with Meadows driving in another run with a base hit, but Blackmon's two-out single in the bottom of the frame retied it. The 5-5 score held though the 10th inning. Morrison relieved Meadows in a double switch in the eighth inning after catcher Johnny Gooch was injured, and the Rockies got scoreless innings from Mike Dunn, Jake McGee and Neshek before turning the game over to Holland in the ninth. The Rockies tried to get a third inning from their closer in the 11th, and failed. With one out, Maranville walked, Smith homered and Max Carey walked; by the time Ottavino and Rusin got out of the inning, another run had scored. Morrison wrapped the game, and the series, with a fourth scoreless inning of relief.

This series was marked -- or marred -- by erratic fielding and ineffective bullpens.

Detorit won the opener behind six innings of two-run ball from starter Frank Lary. Pinch-hitter Bobo Osborne put the Tigers ahead with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth. Bill Bruton scored three times for Detroit and drove in three.

The Cubs scored the final 13 runs of the second game to overcome a huge deficit and their own fielding incompetence. Eight of Detroit's 10 runs were unearned as the Cubs were charged with six errors. Ray Grimes had a bases-loaded pinch-hit triple in the ninth and scored the tying run. Jigger Statz and Cliff Heathcote each scored three runs for the Cubs, and George Grantham, Gabby Hartnett and Grimes each scored twice. Bernie Friberg and Hartnett each had three RBIs. Rocky Colavito scored three runs for the Tigers and drove in a pair.

The series moved to 1924 and Wrigley Field for Game Three, and the runs and errors kept coming. Al Kaline, Norm Cash and Colavito hit consecutive homers in the top of the ninth to seeming put the game out of reach, but Grimes hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth off Phil Regan to pull with in one. All four runs for the Cubs in that inning were unearned, as was one other score. Colavito had four RBIs and three runs scored. Hartnett homered twice for Chicago; he and Hack Miller each scored three runs.

Tony Kaufmann and Paul Foytack calmed things down in Game Four. Foytack took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth, but with one out Statz homered and Heathcote singled. Hank Aguirre entered and allowed a double, a walk and, after an out, another double. That put the Cubs in front, and Kaufmann went the distance with a seven-hitter to even the series.

Lary threw a complete game of his own in Game Five, and the Tigers scored in seven of the nine innings. Two of the five runs Chicago starter Elmer Jacobs allowed in three innings were unearned. Lary allowed six hit and walked none, but one of the hits was a two-run homer by Statz. Bruton scored three runs fot the Tigers.

The series reverted to 1961 and Tiger Stadium for Game Six, which featured the Hall of Fame pitching matchup of Pete Alexander and Jim Bunning (as had Game Two). Alexander went 10 innings for the Cubs but allowed a game-tying homer in the ninth to Colavito. Hartnett homered and tripled twice. The Tigers won the game, and the series, on Steve Boros' RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th.

The Cardinals' erratic fielding and weak bullpen troubled them throughout the series and swung each of the final three games to the Phillies.

The series opened with its sole rout. Philadelphia drove Bob Gibson from the mound in the first inning with a four-run outburst that included two hits, three walks and a costly Curt Flood error. Odubel Herrera scored three times and drove in three on a homer, a double and two singles. Nick Pivetta allowed three runs in the first two innings but then shut out St. Louis for four innings before turning it over to the bullpen.

The Cardinals evened the series behind Curt Simmons, who allowed just one earned run in seven innings. St. Louis trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh but scored three times off three Phillies pitchers, with Flood contributing a two-run double. Gibson worked the ninth for the save.

The series shfited to 2017 and Citizens Bank Park for Game Three. Ray Sadecki went eight innings, allowing two earned runs, for the win. Flood had three hits and two runs scored, and Bill White had three doubles and a single for St. Louis.

The Cardinals hit three homers in Game Four, with Ken Boyer, Carl Warwick and Stan Musial each hitting two-run shots. It was the only game of the series in which the Cardinals did not allow at least one unearned run.

On the verge of elimination, the Phillies beat Gibson again in Game Five. The Cardinals were charged with three errors in the Phillies' two-run fifth, two by second baseman Julian Javier and one by catcher Hal R. Smith. Cesar Hernandez scored twice for Philadelphia.

The series reverted to 1961 and the venerable venue popularly known as Sportsman's Park. Simmons carried a 2-1 lead through eight innings for the Cardinals but was injured during his bottom-of-the-eighth at-bat. Bob L. Miller surrendered three runs in the top of the ninth on an error (shortstop Bob Lillis), a hit batter, a double by Aaron Altherr and a two-run single by Maikel Franco.

Game Seven pit aces Sadecki and Aaron Nola. White doubled home two runs in the third, and Sadecki held Phildelphia scoreless until Franco homered in the seventh. Musial threw out Tommy Joseph at the plate in the eighth to preserve the 2-1 lead. Freddy Galvis led off the top of the ninth with a single and took second on a passed ball by Carl Sawtaski. Galvis took third on a ground out and scored on a Sadecki wild pitch to even the score. With two outs and none on, Herrera homered to put the Phillies ahead, and Sadecki followed that with a two-base error. Miller entered and promptly allowed an RBI single to Rhys Hoskins. Hector Neris threw a perfect ninth for his third straight save to clinch the series.

The series opened in Fenway Park, where Chris Sale allowed two runs on four hits in six innings. Andrew Benintendi went 5-for-5, driving in three runs and scoring once. He had three doubles. Gregory Polanco had three hits for the visitors and scored both Pittsburgh runs.

The Pirates evened the series in Game Two on the strength of a three-run fourth inning highlighted by Francisco Cervelli's two-run double. Xander Bogearts hit a two-run homer off winner Jonathan Taillon in the sixth to account for Boston's runs.

The series shifted to PNC Park, and Benitendi had three more hits in Boston's Game Three win. Mitch Moreland homered in the seventh off Trevor Williams to break a 3-3 deadlock. Blaine Boyer vultured the win in relief of Rick Porcello.

The Pirates even the series again with a 10-inning win. Josh Bell opened the 10th off Heath Hembree with a double. He moved to third on a ground out and scored on David Freese's fly ball. Jackie Bradley Jr. scored three runs for Boston; he homered and walked twice. Josh Harrison drove in two runs for Pittsburgh.

Game Five was Chris Sale again for the Red Sox. He took a no-hitter into the seventh. Bell homered to end the no-hitter and the shutout. The Red Sox scored six runs off Garrett Cole in the first three innings and cruised to the win despite allowing three runs in the final two innings.

The Sox wrapped it up in Game Six behind Drew Pomeranz, who allowed no runs in 6.2 innings. He scattered four hits and walked four. Benintendi scored two of Boston's three runs, and Craig Kimbrel struck out all four men he faced for the save.

Milwaukee won three games on the road to eliminate the 1961 National League pennant winners.

Cincinnati's Joey Jay dominated the visiting Brewers in the opener in Crosley Field, allowing two hits while striking out 10. Gordy Coleman homered to open the scoring in the second inning for the Reds, and he, Frank Robinson and Johnny Edwards each drove in two runs.

Neil Walker hit a grand slam in the fifth inning of the second game as the Brewers evened the series. Walker also had a two-run double in the seventh. Travis Shaw, Domingo Santana and Marcus Thames each scored a pair of runs.

Travis Shaw homered with two outs in the bottom of the 10th of Game 3 to give the Brewers the win in 2017's Miller Park. Robinson homered in the ninth off Milwaukee closer Corey Knebel to send the game to extras.

The Reds rebounded in Game 4, plating eight runs on nine hits in the final three innings to make a winner of reliever Howie Nunn. Brent Suter, the winner of Game Three, took the loss.

Jay again held the Brewers in check in Game 5. He allowed a two-run homer to Santana in the fourth, but the Brewer got just four other hits in the game. The Reds scored four runs in the first and were never challenged. Eddie Kasko went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for Cincinnati.

The series returned to Crosley Field, and the Brewers took immediate control of Game 6 to even the series. Milwaukee got three runs in the first on two doubles and a triple and added two more in the second off Bob Purkey. Keon Broxton homered twice and doubled for four RBIs. Santana drove in three and Shaw two. Robinson had a pair of doubles with two runs in a 3-for-4 performance for the losers.

The Brewers took the decisive Game Seven as four pitchers combined for a five-hit shutout. Chase Anderson worked the first six innings, and Jacob Barnes, Anthony Swarzak and Jeremy Jeffress each faced the minimum. Jesus Aguliar hit a three-run homer in the ninth off Bill Henry to give the Brewers a comfortable cushion.
