HR: DeRosa (1)

Game Two: 09 Yankees 2, 09 Indians 1

New York pitchers dominated the Cleveland lineup throughout the series, allowing just four runs in all.

CC Sabathia set the tone in the first game in Yankee Stadium. He allowed one run in 7.1 innings, that on a homer by Mark DeRosa, while striking out 11. The Yankees took a 2-0 lead in the sixth when Derek Jeter reached on an error and Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez followed with doubles off Cliff Lee. Cano added another RBI in the eighth with a sac fly. The Indians turned a triple play in the seventh off the bat of Melky Cabrera.

A.J. Burnett followed suit in Game Two, allowing one run in six innings while fanning seven. The Yankees got their two runs in the sixth with a double by Mark Teixeira, a single by Hideki Matsui, a groundout by Jorge Posada, and a single by Nick Swisher. Phil Coke, Phil Robertson and Marino Rivera combined for three hitless innings of relief.

The series moved to Cleveland for Game Three, and the Yankees enjoyed the one offensive outburst of the series. Jeter had three RBIs and Posada hit a two-run homer off Justin Masterson. Andy Pettitte was in and out of jams for six innings; Jhonny Peralta came up twice with the bases loaded in the first three innings and made three outs to end both frames.

Joba Chamberlain capped the series with a four-hit shutout in Game Four. He struck out nine and walked four. The Yankees picked up single runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings. Jeter was 3-for-4 with a walk, a run, a RBI and a steal.

Player of the series: Could go to Jeter, who was 7-for-17 with four runs and four RBIs, but we'll go with Chamberlain for his complete-game shutout.

Player availability: All will be fully available for Round Three.

Projected rotation: Sabathia-Burnett-Pettitte-Chamberlain-(Sabathia)-(Burnett)-(Pettitte)

The Red Sox overpowered the Padres in a 2009 matchup heavy on bullpens and multi-run homers.

The Sox opened with an easy win in Fenway. Josh Beckett allowed a second-inning run on three singles, but his teammates scored two in the bottom of the inning, then added two in the third and two more in the fourth, getting six doubles and a homer in those three innings against Kevin Correia. Boston really opened it up with four runs in the seventh off Luis Perdomo, with two more doubles, a triple and a homer.

Game Two was much more sedate. Tim Wakefield and Jake Peavy each allowed a run in the second inning, and the next run game in the bottom of the eighth, when Kevin Youkilis led off with a homer off Peavy. Wakefield allowed eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Takashi Saito got the last out of the seventh after Wakefield had loaded the bases and then pitched around a two-out triple in the eighth to get the win. Peavy went the distance in his loss, allowing just one earned run in eight innings on seven hits.

The series shifted to San Diego and Petco Park, where Jon Lester and Chad Gaudin provided another pitchers duel in Game Three. The Padres scored in the first but left the bases loaded, an opportunity they would regret. Jacoby Ellsbury doubled home Lester in the third to tie the score, and Jason Bay homered in the sixth for the lead. The Sox added a third run in the eighth off Edward Mujica. Lester allowed just two hits after the first inning.

With the Sox up 3-0, the Padres pounded Daisuke Matsuzaka for five runs in the third inning of Game Four and and Paul Byrd for four more in the fifth. Clayton Richards gave up four runs in five innings, and Josh Geer threw four innings off shutout relief to get credit for the win in a scorer's decision. Evereth Cabrera went 4-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and two RBIs but didn't score a run for the Padres, who lost their number four and five hitters, Kevin Kouzmanoff and Chase Headley, to injury.

Those injuries forced Kyle Blanks into the lineup and the cleanup slot, and he came up big in a dramatic Game Five slugfest. Blanks clubbed a three-run homer off Beckett in the first inning to give the Padres a 3-0 lead. The Sox responded with six runs in the third off Correia, with J.D. Drew bopping a grand slam. Drew added a solo shot in the fifth off Mujica to make it 7-3. But Blanks hit another three-run homer in the bottom of the inning to pull the Padres within a run. The bullpens trades scoreless innings (Mujica going four innings in total for San Diego) until the bottom of the ninth. Jonathan Papelbon got the first two hitters, but then Cabrera walked and stole second, David Eckstein singled him home to tie the game. Gonzalez walked, and Blanks ripped what would have been an extra-base hit had it not brought home the winning run from second base.

The Padres' big-inning magic ran out there. Back in Boston for Game Six, Wakefield had his second quality start, allowing one run in six-plus innings on four hits and three walks. By the time he departed, his teammates had put up five runs against Tim Stauffer, highlighted by Drew's three-run homer. Four of the five runs the Sox scored were unearned.

Player of the series: J.D. Drew hit four home runs and had 11 RBIs. He gets the honor in a narrow decision over Wakefield.

Player availability: Lester and Beckett are available for the first two games of Round Three. The bullpen will be fully available.

Projected rotation: Lester-Beckett-Brad Penny-Clay Buchholz-(Lester)-(Beckett)-(Penny)

Down three games to none, the expansion team Pilots held the Braves of Hank Aaron, Orlando Cepeda and Rico Carty to just four runs over the final four games, including two shutouts and advanced to the third round.

Phil Niekro helped get the homestanding Braves off on the right track with eight innings of five-hit ball in the opener. Both runs he allowed were unearned. Felipe Alou hit a three-run homer off Diego Segui in the fourth inning, and after the Pilots used a Clete Boyer error to pull within a run in the top of the eighth, Aaron hit a two-run homer off Jim Bouton to widen the margin.

The second game opened with lots of runs. Steve Whitaker's two run homer capped a three-run first for Seattle against Ron Reed. The Braves struck back with four runs off Marty Pattin, with Alou hitting a leadoff triple. The first five hitters Pattin faced reached. The Braves had three sac flies in the game, two by Aaron. Reed settled in for six scoreless inning after the first to get the win.

The series shifted to Sick's Stadium for Game Three, and Gene Brabender was battered for two runs in the first, two in the second and three in the third. Tony Gonzalez led off with a home run, and Orlando Cepeda added another in the third. The Pilots did manage a 4-4 tie in the second on a pair of two-run homers by Whitaker and Ray Oyler, but mounted little threat to Pat Jarvis and the Atlanta bullpen after that.

Facing elimination, the Pilots turned to George Brunet for Game Four. The lefty held the Braves to one run in five innings before leaving for a pinch-hitter. He held a 2-1 lead at the time, courtesy of a Wayne Comer homer and a pair of doubles by Greg Goossen and Jerry McNertney. Bouton entered in the sixth and yielded solo homers to Aaron and Carty. Seattle immediately tied it on singles by Tommy Harper and Tommy Davis followed by a Comer sac fly. Bouton and John O'Donoghue held the Braves down in the seventh and eighth; in the bottom of the eighth, Davis and Comer hit back-to-back doubles off Jim Britton for the go-ahead run. Bob Locker had a perfect ninth inning for the save.

Niekro and Segui's rematch in Game Five was quite the pitcher's duel, with two of the three runs unearned. Segui allowed just two hits in nine innings; the one run Atlanta mustered off him game when Mike Hegan committed a three-base error on the leadoff hitter in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Mike Lum followed that with a sac fly, which tied the score at 1. (Jim Pagliaroni had tripled home Comer in the sixth inning.) Bouton threw a 1-2-3 10th inning for Seattle. In the bottom of the 10th, pinch hitter Steve Hovley singled with one out. He advanced to second on Harper's walk and scored when Carty muffed pinch-hitter Goossen's fly ball in left.

Back in Fulton County Stadium for Game Six, the Pilots got a four-pitcher shutout from John Gelnar, Bouton, Pattin and Locker. Gelnar went six innings, allowing five singles and no walks. Bouton got five outs, Pattin one and Locker worked through a jam in the ninth. Comer scored both runs for the Pilots, homering in the fourth off Reed and starting a three-single rally for a run in the sixth.

The Pilots got their one and only easy win of the series in the finale, although it wasn't until Jarvis left for a pinch hitter that they blew it open. Don Mincher tripled to lead off the second inning and scored on John Donaldson's single to open the scoring. Brabender and Jarvis kept the game at 1-0 through five innings. Pappas relieved in the sixth and quickly gave up a two-run homer to Mincher. Seattle blew the game wide open with a four-run seventh, highlighted by Hegan's three-run homer. The Pilots hit for Brabender during that rally, and Mike Marshall threw three innings on one-hit ball to wrap up the win and the series.

Player of the series: Wayne Comer played a key offensive role in three of the Pilots' four wins. He was 7 for 16 with two homers, four runs and four RBIs despite making only four starts in the series.

Player availability: Neither Gelnar nor Brabender may pitch until Game Three. Marshall should not be used in Game One.

Projected rotation: Up in the air. The third round matchup with the Astros offers the possibility of a Bouton vs Bouton matchup, and that will happen. The one other certainty is that Brabender will start Game Three and Game Seven if the series goes that far.

The superior pitching depth of the 1969 Dodgers prevailed in this series.

The 2009 Royals got off to a good start in the series opner in Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers touched Zach Greinke for solo runs in the second and third innings, but Kansas City erupted for five runs in the fourth off Bill Singer. Alberto Callaspo led off with a double. Billy Butler singled him to third, and Mark Teahen drove him in with a double. Jose Guillen plated Butler and Teahen with a single, and Alex Gordon capped the uprising with a homer.

Don Sutton was masterful in Game Two, allowing just four hits in eight innings to even the series. Kyle Davies threw four perfect innings for the Royals, but the Dodgers got three runs in the fifth on two singles, a hit batter, a walk and a pair of squeeze bunts, one of which went for a third single. It was the only inning of his seven in which Davies allowed a base runner.

The series shifted to 2009 and Kauffman Stadium. Kansas City called upon first round hero Robinson Tejada, but the power pitcher walked seven and allowed four runs in his five innings. Two of those runs were unearned. Claude Osteen allowed two runs in the first inning, then retired 24 straight hitters. The Royals bats awoke with two outs in the ninth, but Jim Brewer got the final out to preserve the win. Miguel Olivo had three RBIs for Kansas City, two of them on a homer in the ninth off Brewer.

Greinke got the start on short rest in Game Four and fared ill. The first seven Dodgers to hit in the second reached. Willie Crawford led off with a home run, and Len Gabrielson had a two-run single in the five run inning. Despite a three-run homer by David DeJesus, the Royals never got back into the game.

Brian Bannister, John Bale and Joakim Soria kept the series alive in Game Five. Callaspo tripled home two runs in the fifth to give K.C. a 2-0 lead, but Bale's error in the seventh help the Dodgers tie it. Callaspo led off the eighth with a base hit off Sutton; then stole second and scored on Teahen's two-out single.

Davies had a second well-pitched loss in Game Six. Willie Bloomquist's RBI double gave the Royals a 1-0 lead in the third, but a Callaspo error in the fifth set up an unearned run in the fifth. The 1-1 tie held into the eighth, when Ted Sizemore singled and Willie Davis homered. Andy Kosco added another homer one out later. Osteen went 8.1 innings, allowing seven hits and at one point retiring 12 straight Royals hitters. Pete Mikkelsen relieved with two on in the ninth and got the final two hitters.

Player of the series: Osteen threw 17 innings and allowed just four earned runs in his two victories.

Player availability: Wes Parker is injured and cannot play until Game Five.

Projected rotation: Singer-Sutton-Osteen-Singer-(Sutton)-(Osteen)-(Singer)
