John bracket: 2017 Red Sox defeat Monarchs in five games

The Monarchs had Hall of Famers Josh Gibson, Willie Wells and Oscar Charleston in their lineup, yet did not hit a home run in the series against a lefty-heavy Red Sox staff.

Game One: Red Sox 5, Monarchs 4 (10 innings): Boston tied the game with two outs in the ninth on a single by Andrew Benitendi off Dave Brown, who had just entered to relieve Satchel Paige, then won it in the 10th when Christian Vazquez greeted Webster McDonald with an RBI single. Benitendi had three hits and two RBIs.

Game Two: Red Sox 6, Monarchs 4: Mitch Moreland capped a three-run fourth inning with a go-ahead two-run homer, Dustin Pedroia hit a solo homer in the sixth and Benitendi drove in two more runs in the seventh. Charleston went 5-for-5 with a double, two steals, an RBI and a runs scored, Red Sox reliever Addison Reed was credited with his second win in as many games.

Game Three: Red Sox 7, Monarchs 4: Benitendi drove in two more runs, one on a solo homer in the first, as the Red Sox battered Bll Byrd for four runs in 4.3 innings. Drew Pomeranz allowed three runs in the first two innings, then blanked the Monarchs for five innings before giving way to the bullpen. 

Game Four: Monarchs 2, Red Sox 0: With the Monarch facing elimination, Paige fired a three-hit shutout. Only one Red Sox reached scoring position as Paige struck out 10 men without a walk. The Monarchs got both runs in the sixth as Gibson, Oscar "Heavy" Johnson and Rap Dizon each hit doubles. 

Game Five: Red Sox 7, Monarchs 5: Benitendi hammered a three-run homer and added a fourth RBI. Boston hammered Cannonball Redding for four runs in the third inning. The Monarchs got to  4-2 deficit after six innings, but relievers Henry Salmon and Webster McDonald yielded single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings as Boston held off the NeL entery. Craig Kimbrel struck out three in the ninth for his third save of the series.

Paul bracket: 1924 New York Giants defeat 2017 Tampa Bay Rays in six games

Tampa Bay scored just 19 runs in the six games, and nine were unearned. The worst ERA for the seven Giants who pitched in the series was 3.38 (Art Nehf).

Game One: Giants 6, Rays 2: New York scored single runs in each of the first three innings, but the killer blow was a three-run homer in the sixth by Billy Southworth. Virgil Barnes went the distance, allowing just six hits, one a two-run homer by Logan Morrison.

Game Two: Giants 5, Rays 4: Bill Terry drove in three runs and Frankie Frisch drove in the other two as Nehf threw a complete game. Corey Dickerson and Adeiny Hechavarria each homered for Tampa Bay. 

Game Three: Rays 5, Giants 0: Jake Odorizzi and three relievers combined for a four-hit shutout. The Giants were charged with five errors -- one by Frisch and two each by Ross Youngs and Travis Jackson -- and four of Tampa Bay's runs were unearned. In a sidelight, eight of the nine lineup slots for the visiting Giants have plaques in the Hall of Fame.

Game Four: Giants 4, Rays 3: Pinch hitter Terry doubled in the winning run in the top of the ninth inning. Jack Bentley threw the Giants' third complete game victory, allowing just one earned run and the Giants committed three more errors.

Game Five: Rays 1, Giants 0: Dickerson tripled with two outs in the fourth inning, and Jackson booted the following grounder for the only tally of the game. No Giant reached second base against Chris Archer and Alex Colome. 

Game Six: Giants 7, Rays 4: New York got three consecutive doubles in the fifth inning -- Frisch, Heinie Groh and Youngs -- to take the lead and never relenquished it. The Giants went to the bullpen in the eighth inning after the first three men reached against Nehf (one on an error), and Claude Jonnard and Rosy Ryan each got three outs without allowing a hit.

George bracket: 1969 Boston Red Sox defeat 1961 Cincinnati Reds in five games

The 1961 National League champs went down quickly against the '69 Red Sox. The Reds won the opener, then lost four in a row, with a crushing extra-inning loss in Game Four proving pivotal.

Game One: Reds 5, Red Sox 4: Boston led 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, but the Reds plated three runs to take the lead, with Frank Robinson driving in two with a two-out single. The Bosox tied it in the top of the eighth, but Gene Freese homered in the bottom of the inning to put the Reds in front to stay.

Game Two: Red Sox 3, Reds 0: Mike Nagy and Joey Jay traded shutout frames through six innings, but Carl Yastrzemski hit a three-run homer in the seventh. Boston pinch-hit for Nagy during that rally, and Bill Landis and Sparky Lyle completed the four-hit shutout.

Game Three: Red Sox 9, Reds 5: Boston led 7-1 after four innings; Cincinnati scored three runs in the ninth to make the final score deceptively close. Yastrzemski, Mike Andrews and Reggie Smith each scored two runs. Andrews had four hits.

Game Four: Red Sox 7, Reds 6 (11 innings): A contest with multiple lead changes ended with a wild 11th inning. Lyle, pitching his second inning, gave up a single to Robinson and walked Gordy Coleman before yielding a three-run homer to Wally Post. He then walked the next two hitters before Ray Jarvis got the final outs. Jim Brosnan relieved for Cincinnati; with one out pinch-hitter Dick Schofield singled. Yastremski followed with another single. Andrews walked. Cincinnati was unable to turn a double play on Rico Petrocelli's grounder, with a run scoring in the force out. Smith then homered to end the game and give the Sox a 3-1 advantage in the series.

Game Five: Red Sox 7, Reds 1: Cincinnati scored in the top of the first and did not advance a runner beyond second base the rest of the way. Petrocelli and Smith each homered; Petrocelli scored three runs and Smith drove in three.
