Kansas City 7, Cleveland 4, 19 innings: The Royals broke their losing streak with a marathon. Relievers Horacio Pina and Mike Hedlund each worked the equivalent of an extra-inning game themselves. Hedlund shut out the Tribe for 11 innings, allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out 10 and got the win. Pina threw nine scoreless inning before the Royals broke through for three runs in the top of the 19th. Ken Harrelson homered for Cleveland; Moe Drabowsky got the save for Kansas City.
San Diego 3, Montreal 1: Jack Baldschun entered for the Padres with runners on second and third, no outs in the top of the ninth and didn't allow a ball out of the infield to secure the victory. San Diego took the lead with two runs in the eighth, both charged to reliever Dan McGinn. Jerry Robertson shut out the Padres on four hits through six innings, but the Padres chased him with three straight singles in the seventh to tie the game. Joe Niekro got the win; he allowed five hits in eight innings, walking three and striking out two.
Seattle 6, California 4: Steve Whitaker and Wayne Comer homered for the Pilots, and Bob Meyer allowed two earned runs in six innings for the win. Seattle left nine men in scoring position against Angels starter and loser Andy Messersmith. Ray Oyler of the Pilots will miss one game with a minor injury. The Pilots demoted Meyer after the game and reactivated George Brunet.
