Milwaukee won three games on the road to eliminate the 1961 National League pennant winners.

Cincinnati's Joey Jay dominated the visiting Brewers in the opener in Crosley Field, allowing two hits while striking out 10. Gordy Coleman homered to open the scoring in the second inning for the Reds, and he, Frank Robinson and Johnny Edwards each drove in two runs.

Neil Walker hit a grand slam in the fifth inning of the second game as the Brewers evened the series. Walker also had a two-run double in the seventh. Travis Shaw, Domingo Santana and Marcus Thames each scored a pair of runs.

Travis Shaw homered with two outs in the bottom of the 10th of Game 3 to give the Brewers the win in 2017's Miller Park. Robinson homered in the ninth off Milwaukee closer Corey Knebel to send the game to extras.

The Reds rebounded in Game 4, plating eight runs on nine hits in the final three innings to make a winner of reliever Howie Nunn. Brent Suter, the winner of Game Three, took the loss.

Jay again held the Brewers in check in Game 5. He allowed a two-run homer to Santana in the fourth, but the Brewer got just four other hits in the game. The Reds scored four runs in the first and were never challenged. Eddie Kasko went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for Cincinnati.

The series returned to Crosley Field, and the Brewers took immediate control of Game 6 to even the series. Milwaukee got three runs in the first on two doubles and a triple and added two more in the second off Bob Purkey. Keon Broxton homered twice and doubled for four RBIs. Santana drove in three and Shaw two. Robinson had a pair of doubles with two runs in a 3-for-4 performance for the losers.

The Brewers took the decisive Game Seven as four pitchers combined for a five-hit shutout. Chase Anderson worked the first six innings, and Jacob Barnes, Anthony Swarzak and Jeremy Jeffress each faced the minimum. Jesus Aguliar hit a three-run homer in the ninth off Bill Henry to give the Brewers a comfortable cushion.

The Tribe survived some wobbly work by its late-inning bullpen.

Game One, in Cleveland's Progressive Field, went according to form: Corey Kluber threw seven innings of two-hit ball, walking none and fanning seven, with Bryan Shaw and Andrew Miller contributiing one inning apiece to the shutout. Jason Kipnis hit a two-run homer in the first off Jason Vargas, and Jose Ramirez hit a solo homer in the third.

The Royals evened the series as five pitchers held Cleveland to one run on eight hits. Kansas City broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth when Salvadore Perez doubled off Cody Allen with two outs and Melky Cabrera followed with an RBI single.

The series moved to Kansas City and Kaufmann Stadium, where Trevor Bauer allowed one run in six innings and Dan Otero worked the final three innings for a long save. Cleveland blew the game open with a five-run seventh off four Kansas City pitchers, with consecutive RBI doubles by bottom-of-the-order bats Yan Gomes and Bradley Zimmer. Otero allowed two singles but induced a pair of double plays.

Kansas City evened the series again, with Perez shattering a 2-2 deadlock with a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth off Miller. Whit Merrifield singled in the other two Kansas City runs.

Lonnie Chisenhall and Edwin Encarncion each had three RBIs in Game Five as the Tribe won in 11 innings. Chisenhall doubled in the go-head runs in the top off the 11th off Scott Alexander and had a sac fly in the fourth; Encarncion hit a three-run homer off Vargas in the first. The game went into extra innings because Miller allowed an inherited runner and one of his own to score in the eighth and Allen surrendered a leadoff homer to Lorenzo Cain in the ninth. Kluber was charged with two runs in seven innings on three hits.

The series moved back to Cleveland, and the Indians prevailed in 12 innings to wrap up the series, After Carlos Carrasco allowed four runs in six innings, Mike Clevinger relieved with five innings in which he allowed one run on three hits. Ramirez tied the game with a two-out homer in the ninth off Kelvin Herrera, and Gomes singled home Encarncion in the 12th with the walk-off winner.

The Nationals overpowered the Reds, making even spacious Redlands Field play small while outhomering Cincinnati 12 to 1 and outscoring the Reds 43-12. A third of the Reds runs came in their final at-bats of the series.


The Nats opened with a bang, scoring two runs in the second inning of the opener and adding three more in each of  the third and fifth innings. Winning pitcher Max Scherzer hit a grand slam in a nine-run sixth inning. He pitched eight innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits.

Matt Wieters tripled and doubled, scoring twice and driving in another, as the Nats took Game Two. Jayson Werth went 3-for-3. Gio Gonzalez allowed one run on two hits in six innings.

The series shifted to 1924 and Cincinnati's Redlands Field, where Carl Mays threw a complete game, scattering eight hits, in Game Three. Ivy Wingo singled in the go-ahead run in the fourth inning after Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run homer for the Nats.

The Nats put Game Four away early, with Trea Turner and Daniel Murphy opening the contest with back-to-back homers off Pete Donohue. The Nats also got two doubles and a triple in the opening frame. Anthony Rendon homered in the second, and Tanner Roark and three relievers cruised from there.

Scherzer and Eppa Rixey dueled in Game Five. Zimmerman homered in the second, and Wingo singled home Curt Walker in the sixth to tie it. Rixey went 10 innings before giving way to a pinch-hitter. Scherzer left after seven innings, with Oliver Perez, Brandon Kintzler and Matt Albers combining for four scoreless innings. The Nats erupted for eight runs in the top of the 12th, aided by a pair of Hughie Critz errors and a passed ball. The Reds scored four runs in the bottom of the inning, with Edd Roush hitting a two-run homer, but Shawn Kelly got the last out to end the game and series.

The White Sox didn't hit a homer in the six game series, but they allowed just one (unearned) run in three complete game wins en route to their second straight series upset.

The first game, in Baltimore's Memorial Stadium, went to the favored O's. Baltimore scored five runs in the third innings, topped by a three-run double by Ron Hansen on which Hansen scored on Bibb Falk's error. The White Sox never caught up.

Sloppy Thurston threw a seven-hit shutout in the second game to even the series. He walked one and struck out three. Falk went 4-for-4 for the Sox, while Earl Sheely scored twice and Willie Kamm drove in a pair.

The series moved to 1924 and Comiskey Park for Game 3, and Red Faber threw his third straight complete game shutout. The spitballer allowed four hits, waking none and striking our five. Falk drew a bases-loaded walk in the third inning to bring home Harry Hooper with the game's only tally.

Baltimore evened the series behind Hal Brown, who allowed one run in seven innings. The Sox made it close with two runs in the eighth off Hoyt Wilhelm and another in the ninth off Dick Hall. Brooks Robinson and Jerry Adair each drove in a pair of runs for Baltimore, and Jackie Brandt scored twice.

The Sox retook the series lead on a pair of big innings in Game 5, plating four runs in the third and three more in the fourth off Steve Barber. Hooper, Eddie Collins and Sheely each scored twice. The Orioles hit the only homers of the series off Thurston, who won despite allowing five runs in eight innings.

The series returned to 1961 Baltimore, and the Sox clinched the series in a sloppy Game 6 rout. A Brooks Robinson error set up three unearned runs in the first inning, and Chuck Estrada walked four and threw a wild pitch in the second. The Sox scored two more unearned runs in the fifth. Lyons went the distance, allowing an unearned run on six hits and four walks. Kamm drove in three runs as the Sox drew nine walks off four Baltimore pitchers.
