The Yankees scored 46 runs in the series and, with one inning as an exception, smothered the Cardinals with their superb bullpen. Rogers Hornsby did go 10-for-22 in the series for St. Louis.
Jacoby Ellsbury homered twice in the opener. The first, a three-run shot in the second, put the Yankees up 3-0; the second, in the fourth, plated two runs. He also singled, walked and scored a third run in the rout.
St. Louis scored four runs in the first inning of Game Two and led 6-0 after the top of the fourth. But Aaron Judge and Chase Headley each homered in the fourth for the Yankees to knock Allen Sotheron out of the game, and New York pounded relievers Jesse Fowler, Leo Dickerman and Eddie Dyer for eight runs in the next four innings. Yankee bullpenners Adam Warren, Dellin Betances, David Robertson and Arodis Chapman threw five scoreless frames.
The series shifted to St. Louis and Sportsman's Park for Game Three, and it was more of the same. The Yankees scored nine runs on 18 hits, including a ninth-inning grand slam from Judge. Hornsby homered for the only Cardinal tally. Tommy Kahnle, Robertson, Betances and Warren each threw scoreless innings, with only one hit allowed.
Jesse Haines started Game Four on short rest and got the job done for St. Louis, going the distance despite homers by Judge and Didi Gergorious. Hornsby and Sunny Jim Bottomley each had RBI triples for the Cardinals off loser Sonny Gray, and the Cards even scored a run off the Yankee bullpen.
Ellsbury's two-run homer in Game Five's sixth inning gave New York a 5-3 lead, which the Yankees held into the ninth. Chapman struck out the first two Cardinal batters before Chick Hafey tripled. An error by second baseman Starlin Castro scored Hafey and put the tying run on. St. Louis then got consecutive singles from Hornsby, Bottomley and Ray Blades to pull out the stunning win and send the series back to the Bronx.
In the sixth game, Ellsbury doubled home the go-ahed run in a three-run eighth to set up Chapman. This time the flamethrowing lefty didn't let them down, although he did allow a pair of singles.
Player of the Series: Jacoby Ellsbury.
Player availability: Tanaka cannot pitch until Game Three. The bullpen will be fully rested for Game One. Gray and Greg Bird will be swapped out of the active roster.
Projected rotation: Severino-Sabathia-Tanaka-Garcia-(Severino)-(Sabathia)-(Tanaka)
