Baltimore held the Padres to eight runs and 20 hits in the four game series.
Steve Barber went seven innings in the opener at Memorial Stadium, allowing one run on three hits. Brooks Robinson singled home Whitey Herzog in the first inning to put the Orioles in front, and they never relinquished the lead. Hoyt Wilhelm got the last two outs with the tying run in scoring position to secure the win.
Chuck Estrada fought his control in Game Two with seven walks, but he also struck out 13. The Padres had their biggest inning of the series when they scored three runs in the eighth, two charged tp Estrada and one to Wes Stock, but the Orioles already had a big lead. Steve Busby went 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
Milt Pappas went the distance in Game Three, played in San Diego's Petco Park, He allowed three hits and walked three with five strikeouts. Gus Triandos doubled home Baltimore's two runs in the sixth inning.
Hal Brown came one out shy of a complete game in the finale. Brown held the Padres scoreless until the ninth, allowing six hits and two runs. Jim Gentile homered twice for the Birds and drove in four runs.
