It took a while for the Bomba Squad to live up to its nickname, but only one Twins starter allowed a run in the four games.
Jose Berrios went 6.2 innings in Game One in Target Field, allowing five hits and walking none while striking out eight. Sergio Romo got the last out of the seventh and Tyler Duffey and Trevor May each worked a perfect inning. Byron Buxton and Jonathan Schoop each doubled and scored a run.
Miguel Cabrera singled in two runs in the third inning of Game Two to give Detroit its only lead of the series, but Buxton's RBI single in the sixth tied it at three. Buxton led off the bottom of the ninth with a double and scored on Max Kepler's single to make May the winning pitcher. Ryne Harper, Romo and May combined for four innings of perfect relief.
The Twins got their first homers of the series in Game Three in Comerica Park, with Schoop and C.J. Cron each hitting solo shots. Kyle Gibson threw six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and Duffey, Zach Littell and Taylor Rogers each worked a scoreless frame for the Twins second combined shutout.
The Twins knocked Jordan Zimmermann out in the first inning for Game Four, plating six runs. Kepler led off with a homer, Eddie Rosario hit a two-run homer, and Ehrie Adrianza tripled home a pair of runs in that inning. Nelson Cruz homered twice, one with the bases loaded in the sixth, and totaled seven RBIs. The Tigers dinged reliever Delvin Smeltzer for four runs in the eighth.
Player availability: Byron Buxton is injured and out for Game One of the second round
Projected rotation: Berrios-Pineda-Odorizzi-Perez or Gibson-(Berrios)-(Pineda)-(Odorizzi)
