Chicago 5, Montreal 4: Pat Bourque homered in the top of the eighth to break the tie, and Ray Burris worked around hits in the eighth and ninth innings to protect the lead. Bob Locker, who got the final out of the seventh with bases loaded, got the win, and Ernie McAnally took the loss. Ron Santo hit a two-run homer off Mike Torrez in the third.
Pittsburgh 2, New York 0: Dock Ellis allowed one hit in seven innings before leaving for a pinch-hitter, and relievers Bob Moose and Dave Giusti completed the shutout. Both runs scored by the Pirates were unearned. Al Oliver reached on an error by first baseman John Milner and scored on Richie Zisk's triple in the first; Bob Robertson reached on a two-base error by shortstop Jim Fregosi and scored on pinch-hitter Vic Davalillo's groundout in the seventh. Tom Seaver allowed four hits in eight inning for the loss.
