Pittsburgh 3, Houston 2 (11 innings): Richie Hebner homered in the top of the 11th off Jim York to break the tie. Dave Giusti pitched three scoreless innings for the win, and Bob Johnson retired all three men he faced for the save. The game was scoreless after six innings, but the Astros scored two runs in the seventh off Nelson Briles (one run unearned) and the Pirates replied with a two-run homer in the top of eighth off Don Wilson by Willie Stargell.
Pittsburgh 6, Houston 1: The race pennant race got a bit tighter with Pittsburgh's sweep of the Astros. Willie Stargell's homer capped a four-run second inning again JR Richard, and John Morlan took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. He ended up allowing three hits in 8.1 innings, with Ramon Hernandez finishing the game. Morlan also scored a pair of runs.
Montreal 3, New York 2: Tom Seaver lost the strike zone for three batters in the sixth inning, and lost the game in the process. Leading 2-1, he walked the first three men he faced in the sixth, starting with opposing pitcher Mike Torrez. Torrez and Ron Hunt eventually scored, and the Mets never caught up. Torrez went 7.1 innings for the win. Joe Gilbert got two outs in the eighth, amd Mike Marshall loaded the bases in the ninth but got out of the jam with a double-play grounder.
St. Louis 6, Chicago 1: Scipio Spinks allowed one run on five hits in 6.2 innings, and Rich Folkers and Wayne Granger combined for 2.1 hitless frames. The Cardinals plated four runs in the fourth inning off loser Burt Hooton with four singles, a double, a walk and an error. Billy Williams homered for the Cubs sole tally.
