Relief pitching was the key to the series. The Cubs bullpen allowed one run in 14 innings, while the Rangers' relievers took three of their four losses.

Pete Alexander needed no relief in Game One for the Cubs, as he went the distance. The Cubs scored three of their four runs in the seventh and eighth innings, with Jigger Statz hitting a two-run homer in the seventh and Otto Vogel driving in the decisive run with a sac fly in the eighth. Adrian Beltre went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a run scored and a double.

Beltre had another pair of hits in Game Two and scored twice as the Rangers evened the series. Andrew Cashner allowed one run in 6.1 innings for the win. The Cubs made the score close with two runs in the ninth off Matt Bush, who got the save anyway.

The series shifted to Arlington and Globe Life Park for Game Three. George Grantham and Hack Miller hit back-to-back homers in the third off loser Martin Perez. Vic Keen allowed one run on five hits in six innings, and Elmer Jacobs worked the final three innings, getting two double plays, for the save.

The Rangers again evened the series behind Yu Darvish (two runs in six innings) and three relievers. Beltre tripled in one run and scored another, while Jonathan Lucroy hit a solo homer off loser Tony Kaufmann, who went the distance for the Cubs.

Pivotal Game Five went to the Cubs after 12 innings. Alexander again went nine innings before giving way to Rip Wheeler, who faced just six hitters in his two innings of work for the win. Sheriff Blake threw a hitless bottom of the 12th for the save.

The series returned to Cubs Park for Game Six, and the Cubs clinched it with a four-run rally in the ninth off Matt Bush. Miller drove in the winning run with a pinch-hit single. Joey Gallo hit a grand slam in the third off Chicago starter Vic Aldridge. Guy Bush threw three perfect innings of relief, but it was Wheeler's perfect ninth that put him in position to claim the win.
