The Giants used just six pitchers, one of them for a single inning, for the sweep, and Felipe Alou drove in at least one run in each game.

Alou and Willie McCovey each hit two-run homers in the opener at Candlestick Park to back Jack Sanford, who allowed just four hits in 8.1 innings. Stu Miller relieved with two men on in the ninth and retired both men he faced.

Mike McCormick and Dylan Bundy dueled in the second game, which was scoreless into the bottom of the eighth, when the Giants broke through for three runs. Alou doubled (his second two-bagger fo the game) with the bases loaded to set up another save opportunity for Miller.

The series shifted to Baltimore's Camden Yards, and Game Three lasted a long while. Manny Machado homered and doubled to give the Orioles a 3-2 lead after six innings. Jim Davenport doubled in two runs in the top of the ninth to give the Giants the lead, but Trey Mancini led off the bottom of the inning with a game-tying homer off Miller. The changeup artist didn't allow another hit in a four-inning stint, and got the win when Alou singled home Willie Mays in the 12th.

Machado led off Game Four for the home team with a fly ball that Harvey Kuenn played into a double, and he later scored on an error. It turned out to be the only hit Sad Sam Jones allowed; Jones walked two and struck out seven. Mays homered in the fourth to even the score, and the Giants got RBI singles from Kuenn, Orlando Cepeda and Alou to give Jones all the support he needed.
