Each team scored just 20 runs in the series, but the Astros used theirs more efficiently.

The Senators jumped out to an early lead in the opener at Minute Maid Park, with Gene Woodling and Dale Long each hitting homers in the first inning off Mike Fiers. Marty Keough added another four-bagger in the second as Washington drove Fiers from the mound. Bennie Daniels allowed just five hits in the complete game win.

Joe McClain also went the distance for Washington in Game Two, but Alex Bregman hit a two-run homer in the sixth to put the Astros on top. Dallas Kuechel pitched into the eighth for the win, despite allowing six walks.

The series moved to Griffith Stadium for Game Three. Coot Veal's two-run double gave Dick Donovan a 2-1 lead in the fourth, which he held into the seventh, when two singles, an error, a passed ball and a sac fly gave Houston the lead. Gene Green tied it with a homer in the eighth, but Jake Marisnick hit a two-run homer off Pete Burnside in the ninth to give Chris Devenski the vultured win.

Lance McCullers held the Senators to one run in six innings in Game Four and drove in a run himself. Brad Peacock and Luke Gregerson combined for three innings of one-hit, one-run relief to finish the win.

The Astros finally got their bats going in the final innings of Game Five. Washington led 3-2 after six innings, but Houston scored five runs in the final three innings. Carlos Correa hit a pair of homers, Jose Altuve went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs and George Springer tripled. Tony Sipp, the first reliever used, got the win, and Francisco Lirano worked the final two innings for the save.
