This series pitted a team with power with a homer-enhancing park against a lineup prioritized for defense and sequential offense in a spacious yard. No matter the venue, the latter won each game.
Game One, in Forbes Field, went 10 innings and was decided by Rabbit Maranville's two-out, bases-loaded hit. The Pirates got shutout relief from Emil Yde (two innings) and Johnny Morrison (one inning) to get to Maranville's heroics.
Ray Kremer went the distance for the win in Game Two, scattering six hits. The Pirates scored all three of their runs in the first inning, peppering Eli Grba for four hits and a walk in that inning. Pittsburgh got just one hit the rest of the way, but had enough to win.
The series shifted to the Los Angeles version of Wrigley Field for Game Three, and Max Carey emerged as an unlikely slugger. The Pirates' centerfielder and leadoff man clubbed a pair of homers. Kiki Cuyler went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a walk and a double, and Pie Traynor tripled and singled. Lee Meadows went seven innings for the win.
Facing elimination, the Angels brought back Ken McBride on short rest for Game Four, and his mates supported him with four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run homer from George Thomas off starter Yde. But Yde followed that bad inning with five scoreless frames, and his teammates knocked McBride out in the sixth. Los Angeles reliever Jack Spring was stung for four runs in the seventh, including a three-run homer from Carey, and Jeff Pfeffer threw three shutout innings for the save.
Player of the Series: Max Carey
Projected rotation: Cooper-Kremer-Meadows-Yde or Morrison-(Cooper)-(Kremer)-(Meadows)
