The Los Angeles pitchers muted the Philadelphia bats, casting a pair of shutouts.

Game One, in Dodger Stadium, was a duel between aces Eddie Rommel and Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw went seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits; the Athletics first run scored on a balk, and the the other on a ground out. Rommel went nine innings, scattering nine hits and surrendering two runs. Dodger relievers Pedro Baez, Kenley Jansen and Tony Watson each threw a hitless inning, and in the bottom of the 10th A's reliever Sam Grey allowed two walks and two hits to plate the decisive run..

The second game was all Dodgers. Rich Hill, Brandon Morrow, Tony Cigrani and Ross Stripling combined for a seven-hit shutout, with Hill going five innings.

The series shifted to 1924 and Philadelphia, and the Dodgers rode a five-run fifth to the win in Game Three. Justin Turner drove in three runs; he went 2-for-2 with a homer, two walks and a sac fly. Kneta Maeda threw seven innings for the win, allowing three runs on six hits.

The Athletics staved off elimination in Game Four, overcoming a 3-0 deficit after the first inning. Joe Hauser and Chick Galloway each homered in the A's three-run sixth to take the lead. Dennis Burns threw three scoreless innings of relief to keep the game close, and Sam Gray allowed one run in three-plus innings for the win, with Slim Harris getting the final three outs after Gray allowed the first two men to reach in the ninth.

Kershaw threw a three-hit shutout in Game Five to wrap up the series for the Dodgers. The lefty drove in the first two runs for L.A. with a second-inning double, and Turner and Yasiel Puig added homers.

In a series of power hitters and power pitchers, three of the Yankees four wins came on home runs in their final at-bats.

Sandy Koufax dominated Game One in new Yankee Stadium, striking out 13 in 7.2 innnings, including seven in a row from the second through fourth innings. Koufax allowed four hits and three walks but was relieved after loading the bases with two outs in the eighth. Larry Sherry struck out three of the four men he faced for the save.

The Yankees bats awoke in Game Two. Gary Shanchez drove in six runs with a three-run homer and three-run triple. Aaron Judge hit a three-run homer and Didi Gregorius hit a two-run shot. Tommy Kahnle fanned both hitters he faced to get out of a fifth-inning jam created by starter CC Sabathia and was credited with the win.

The series shifted to 1961 and the misshapen L.A. Memorial Coliseum, and the two teams combined for 10 homers in Game Three. The Dodgers took a 9-8 lead into the ninth, but with two outs and one one defensive sub Daryl Spencer booted a grounder, and Sanchez followed with a three-run homer off Ron Perranoski. It was Sanchez's second homer of the game. Charley Neal also homered twice. Chasen Shreve, who got a double play from the only hitter he faced, was the winner.

Johnny Podres allowed a solo homer to Sanchez in Game Four but otherwise keeping the visitors off the scoreboard. Podres drove in three runs himself with a pair of singles and allowed eight hits in eight innings.

Koufax was again dominant in Game Five -- until the eighth inning. He had allowed just two hits in seven innings, one a homer by Sanchez. But in the eighth he walked Aaron Hicks and allowed a single to Starlin Castro. One out later, Sanchez hit another homer and turned a 3-1 L.A. lead into a 4-3 N.Y. lead, and Arodis Chapman threw a perfect ninth to save it for Chad Green.

The series returned to 2017 and New York. Frank Howard and Junior Gilliam each homered off Sabathia to stake Stan Williams to an early lead, but Matt Holliday homered to narrow the gap and brought home the tying run with a double play grounder in the seventh. And in the bottom of the ninth, Ron Perranoski hit Todd Frazier with a pitch, and Castro followed with a series-cliching walkoff homer.

The 1961 Tribe upset the 2017 champions, getting complete games in the final two games and outscoring the Astros by 11 runs over the six contests.

The Astros jumped out in front in the opener at Minute Maid Park, with Jose Altuve and Marwin Gonzalez getting RBI hits in a three-run third. But the Tribe scored three of their own in the top of the fourth, with Johnny Temple hitting an unlikely two-run homer off Justin Verlander. Willie Kirkland's home in the fifth drove Verlander from the mound, and the Tribe tagged Luke Gregerson for three more in the sixth, with Kirkland picking up two more RBIs.

Houston even the series with an 11-inning win in Game Two. With two outs in the 11th, Altuve doubled and Gonzalez singled him in to make Dick Stigman the loser. Woodie Held hit for the cycle in Cleveland's loss, going 5-for-5 with two singles, a double, a triple and a homer. The homer came in the eighth inning off Francisco Liriano and tied the game.

The series shifted to 1961 and Memorial Stadium in Cleveland for Game Three. Yuri Gurriel hit a three-run homer in the second off Gary Bell. The Tribe did work a 3-3 tie, but consecutive doubles in the seventh from Gurriel and Alex Bregman put the Astros back in front, and Houston relievers Brad Peacock and Ken Gile stranded five baserunners in the final two innings to protect that lead.

Houston's Game Four starter, Collin McHugh, lasted just two innings, allowing six runs, five earned. Kirkland had three RBIs off McHugh. The Astros pulled within two runs after five innings, but in the sixth Tito Francona hit a three-run homer off Peacock. John Romano and Francona added solo shots in the eighth and ninth innings respectively.

Mudcat Grant outdueled Verlander in Game Five. Verlander yielded two runs in six innings on five hits; Grant went the distance on a four-hitter, with the only run coming in the sixth when Gonzalez followed Altuve's two-out single with a double. Grant struck out seven and walked none. Romano and Temple had the RBIs for the Indians.

The series reverted to 2017 and Houston for Game Six, and the Astros scored a pair of first inning runs. But designated hitter Chuck Essigian homered in the second off Dallas Keuchel, and Held hit a two-run homer to put Cleveland ahead. Kirkland hit another two-run homer in the fifth, and Jim Perry took it from there. Perry threw an eight-hitter, only four of them after the first inning, and walked none.

Jim Brosnan and Jim Maloney combined for nine innings of shutout relief work for Cincinnati, gathering two wins and three saves.

They both got decisions in the Crosley Field opener. Detroit rattled Cincy starter Joey Jay for six runs in five innings and added a seventh run in the sixth off Howie Nunn, but Eddie Kasko's three-run homer off Shane Greene capped a five-run eighth. Maloney loaded the bases in the top of the eights with one out but got Alex Avila to ground into a double play to escape the jam. and Brosnan worked the ninth to nail it down.

The Reds needed another bottom-of-the-eighth homer to pull out Game Two. This time it was Frank Robinson connecting off Alex Wilson for a two-run homer. Brosnan worked two innings in relief for the win. Gordy Coleman had a pair of RBI singles for Cincinnati.

The series shifted to 2017 and Comerica Park for Game Three. The Tigers drove Bob Purkey from the mound with five runs and two homers (Victor Martinez and Alex Presley) in the first inning, and Matt Boyd made the early runs stand up. The Reds made the final score superficially close with three runs in the ninth off Francisco Rodriguez. Presley had four RBIs for the Tigers and Miguel Cabrera scored three runs.

Robinson hit a three-run homer in the first inning of Game Four to vault the Reds into an early lead. Ken Hunt allowed two runs in six innings; after he allowed the first two men to reach in the seventh. Maloney relieved and retired nine of the 10 men he faced, with the only blemish being an error by second baseman Don Blasengame. Maloney fanned five in his three innings of work and got the save.

J.D. Martinez's walk-off homer off Purkey in the bottom of the 10th in Game Five staved off elimination.  Jay allowed two runs in nine innings for the no-decision, and he was essentially match by Michael Fulmer (two runs in eight innings), with reliever Justin Wilson striking out five of his six hitters for the win.

The Reds returned to 1961 and Crosley to wrap up the series. Jim O'Toole allowed one run in seven innings, allowing six hits, and Brosnan allowed one hit in two innings of relief. Blasengame scored two runs for Cincinnati.
