The Reds prevailed in a low-scoring series that also featured plenty of home runs.
The opener in Minnesota's Metropolitan Stadium was the most high scoring. Rod Carew hit a two-run homer in the first inning off Luis Castillo, but the Reds pieced together a four-run third off Bert Blyleven. Tucker Barnhart opened the scoring with a solo homer and Eugenio Suarez hit a two-run double to cap the inning. Carew added two more RBIs with a single and triple as the Twins regained the lead after five innings. Blyleven maintained the lead in to the ninth, when Yasiel Puig singled and scored on a double by Aristides Aquino, who then scored the go-ahead run of a single by Jose Peraza.
The Twin evened the series in Game Two. Steve Braun drew three walks and scored a pair of runs, but it was his 10th inning single that brought in the decisive tally. Jerry Terrell led off the inning with a hit off Michael Lorenzen. He then stole second ahead of Braun's hit. Ray Corbin threw two hitless innings in relief of Dick Woodson for the win/
The series shifted to Cincinnati and 2019's Great American Park. George Mitterwald homered in the fifth to give the Twins a short-lived lead in Game Three. Derek Dietrich hit a pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, and Puig homed in the sixth to put the Reds in front to stay. Robert Stevenson got the win for two scoreless innings of relief.
Suarez homered with a man on in the first inning of Game Four and the Reds never relinquished the lead. Trevor Bauer allowed one unearned run on two hits in six innings for the win. Puig homered in the fourth.
Dietrich hit a walk-off homer to lead off the ninth off Corbin and clinch the series for Cincinnati. Aquino had homered in the fourth for the first and only run the Reds got off Bill Hands. Castillo threw six scoreless innings but the Twins tied it in the eighth off Lorenzen on singles by Tony Oliva and Braun followed by a sac fly from Larry Hisle. Corbin got through the eighth without difficulty, but Dietrich got him in the ninth.
