Kansas City totaled just 16 hits and four runs for the series and scored just one run against the St. Louis bullpen.

Jack Flaherty went seven innings for the Cardinals in the opener at Busch Stadium III, allowing one run on four hits. Marcell Ozuna tripled in a run in the first inning and drove in the other in the third with a sac fly. Giovanny Gallegos and Carlos Martinez each worked a hitless inning for finish the game

The Royals came closest to a win in Game Two. Al Fitzmorris turned a 2-0 lead over to the bullpen after seven innings. Gene Garber pitched a scoreless eighth, but Paul Goldschmidt led off the bottom of the ninth with homer. Kelten Wong followed with a single and moved up on a grounder. Steve Mingori relieved to get a popup from Matt Carpenter, and Doug Bird entered with one out to get. But Yadier Molina singled in Wong to tie the score. The Royals came close in the 11th -- Lou Piniella fanned with two men in scoring position and two out --  and the Cardinals broke through in the 12th on a walk, a single and an RBI grounder.

The series moved to Royals Stadium for Game Three. Adam Wainwright allowed one hit in five innings, then Jordan Hicks, Gallegos, John Brebbia and John Gant each worked a hitless inning. Molina homered, doubled, singled and scored a pair of runs.

The first three hitters of Game Four scored for the Cardinals against Dick Drago, and Miles Mikolas held the Royals to one run in six innings. St. Louis broke the game open with five runs in the eighth, with Carpenter hitting a three-run homer, and four relievers combined to shut out the Royals in the final three innings.
