Mel Stottlemyre, Fritz Peterson and Lindy McDaniel allowed a combined three runs over 37.6 innings, getting credit for three wins and a save. The rest of the Yankee pitchers weren't nearly as effective, but they didn't to be.
Peterson's effectiveness in the Yankee Stadium opener -- eight scoreless innings -- wasn't enough. Steve Renko matched his zeroes and then some. Peterson allowed six hits; Renko allowed one single in nine innings. McDaniel and Joe Gilbert kept the shutouts going through the 11th. Steve Hamilton relieved in the top of the 12th and gave up doubles to pinch-hitter Pepe Frias and Ken Singleton, and Mike Marshall threw a scoreless bottom of the 12th.
Game Two also went extras, but this time had plenty of offense. Hal Breeden hit a three-run homer in the first off Yankee starter Al Downing, and the Expos added single runs in the second and third to chase the lefty. But the Yankees scored three runs off Mike Torrez in the bottom of the third, with Roy WHhite driving in a pair with a double. Joe Pepitone homered in the sixth and and pinch-hitter John Ellis singled in the tying run after a Torrez wild pitch. Gene Michael put the Yankees ahead with an eighth-inning double, but Boots Day homered to lead off the ninth to tie it. Marshall threw a scoreless ninth but got only one out in the 10th -- single by Michael, double by Ellis, and walk-off single by Horace Clarke.
Yankee ace Mel Stottlemyre threw a seven-hit shutout in Montreal's Parc Jarry in Game Three. Joe Pepitone homered in a three-run fourth off Balor Moore, and White doubled home Clarke from first base in the seventh. Stottlemyre walked two and allowed no extra base hits.
Boots Day hit another homer in Game Four, and Steve Rogers allowed one run in seven innings as the Expos evened the series. Jimmy Hall drove in both runs for the Yankees. John Boccabella also homered for Montreal.
Peterson and Renko matched up for another duel in Game Five. Renko drove in Tim Foli with a single in the second; White hit a two-run homer in the fourth. That 2-1 score held until the top of the ninth, when White led off with a second home. Bobby Murcer chased Renko with a single, and Pepitone greeted Gilbert with a triple and scored on a sac fly. McDaniel worked two scoreless innings for the save.
The Yankees staked Stottlemyre to an early lead in Game Six: a run in the first, another in the second, two more in the third, another in the fifth. Stottlemyre shut the Expos for six innings before allowing a run in the seventh. He left in the eighth after walking two men, and Hamilton got the final four outs to wrap up the series.
Pleyer availability: Jake Gibbs should sit Game One of the fourth round.
Projected rotation: Peterson-Stottlemyre-Bahnsen-Peterson (penalty)-(Stottlemyre)-(Downing or Burbach)-(Bahnsen)
