The top-seeded Dodgers (not only in the bracket but in the tournment) won two games in this series on walk-off homers but lost the series.
Game One was one of those walkoffs, and it came in the 10th inning. Walker Buehler and Ubaldo Jimenez carried a dual shutout into the sixth inning, when Tory Tulowitzki homered for a 1-0 Rockies lead. In the bottom of the inning, Clay Bellinger doubled in a pair of runs for the Dodgers. Brad Hawpe greeted reliever Jose Urias with another solo shot in the seventh. The 2-2 score stood into the 10th, when Jason Hammel relieved for Colorado. Matt Beaty singled to open the inning, stole second and scored on Joc Pederson's homer.
Colorado evened the series behind Jorge de la Rosa's six innings of two-hit ball. Dexter Fowler scored twice -- he doubled, walked and stole a base in five trips to the plate -- as the Rockies turned three hits off Hyun-Jin Ryu into a pair of runs in six innings. Rafael Betancourt, Matt Daley and Huston Street each pitched an inning behidn de La Rosa, who walked none and struck out 11.
The series moved to Coors Field, and the Dodgers bats erupted in Game Three. A.J.Pollock hit a three-run homer. Chris Taylor, Bellinger, Max Muncy and Beaty each scored twice. Clayton Kershaw allowed one run in 5.1 innings for the win. Los Angeles pummeled the Colorado bullpen for eight runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
The Rockies bounced back in Game Four, with Ryan Spilborghs hammering a pivotal three-run homer in the sixth. The Dodgers hit three homers in the fifth off Aaron Cook, all of them solo shots -- Justin Turner, Muncy and Pollock. That gave Los Angeles a 5-2 lead. But the Rockies got one back off Rich hill in the fifth, and in the sixth, after two men reached off Caleb Ferguson with one out, Yimi Garcia entered and Spilborghs connected. Ross Stirpling didn't retire a batter in the seventh as the Rockies added on three more runs, and they needed them. Franklin Morales (two scoreless innings) was credited with the win.
Jimenez silenced the Dodger bats after two straight big games with a seven-hit shutout. The Dodgers had no extra-base hits and never had more than one hit in an inning.Jimenez walked one and struck out 10. Chris Iannetta hit a solo homer off Buehler, and Todd Helton singled, doubled and scored twice.
Back in Dodger Stadium for Game Six, de la Rosa carried a 4-2 lead into the seventh with a shot at clinching the series. But Bellinger hit a three-run homer off the wearying lefty to take a 5-4 lead. That score stood until the ninth, when Fowler's double off Kenley Jansen scored Seth Smith from first base to tie it. Hammel relieved for the bottom of the inning, and Beaty, pinch-hitting for Jansen, greeted him with the walk-off homer.
That sent the series to a Game Seven. The Rockeis greeted Kershaw with a bang -- two runs on three hits and a walk in the first -- and kept adding on. Clint Barmes hit solo homers in the third and ninth innings and scored three runs in all. Iannetta hit another homer. Jason Marquis allowed the Dodgers one run on three hits in five innings, and he was followed by Morales, Daley and Street to seal the win and the series.
Player availablity: Morales should not relieve in Game One of the fourth round.
Projected rotation: Jimenez-Cook-de la Rosa-Marquis-(Jimenez)-(Cook)-(de la Rosa)
