The 2009 Rockies -- a good but not historically significant team -- knocked off the reknowned 1961 Yankees, and their four victories were not close. One of the Yankees' wins was 17-0, and the Rockies still outscored New York by six runs over the course of the series. Colorado never used closer Huston Street and its bullpen never surrendered a lead.
Game One: Rockies 11, Yankees 3: Colorado scored six runs in the sixth inning to take the lead, with five of the runs unearned. Garrett Atkins hit a three-run homer to cap the inning and added an RBI single in a four-run ninth. Ubaldo Jimenez went 6.2 innings for the win, with three relievers getting the final seven outs without allowing a hit.
Game Two: Rockies 12, Yankees 2: Colorado led 3-2 going into the sixth, then put up another six spot. Chris Iannetta went 3-for-3 with two homers, one double, two walks, five RBIs and three runs scored. Dexter Fowler also homered. The Rockies bullpen worked four scoreless frames behind Jorge de la Rosa's five-inning start.
Game Three: Yankees 7, Rockies 3: Bill Stafford allowed three runs in 6.1 innings for the win. Roger Maris homered, as did Bill Skowron, and both Maris and Mickey Mantle scored a pair of runs,
Game Four: Rockies 6, Yankees 2: Aaron Cook allowed five hits in eight innings, including four double plays. He retired the final eight men he faced. Brad Hawpe followed a two-out error by Bobby Richardson with a three-run homer in the first inning; Richardson committed an error in the second that lead to a fourth unearned run charged to Ralph Terry.
Game Five: Yankees 17, Rockies 0: Whitey Ford went eight innings, allowing four hits, and even tripled in a pair of runs. Maris and Skowron each hit three-run homers. Skowron totalled five RBIs. Tony Kubek scored three runs. The Yankees scored in only three innings -- four in the second, 10 in the fifth and three in the eighth.
Game Six: Rockies 7, Yankees 2: Colorado scored one run in the first inning, two in the third (both coming in on a two-out error by Clete Boyer) and never trailed. De la Rosa allowed six hits in 6.1 innings, leaving after Hector Lopez hit a two-run homer in the seventh; Matt Daley and Rafael Betancourt finished it up to clinch the series.
Projected rotation: Jimenez-Marquis-de la Rosa-Cook-(Jimenez)-(Marquis)-(de la Rosa). Colorado may want to drop a reliever and add an infielder.
